Hi Laura,
Thanks to cherylinpickering for the red flowered canna This year it is about 5feet growing on my slope on the outside of my fence under a bit of mulch all day sun. Next year I will give my cannas more fertilizer and more mulch. I want to see them from my backyard LOL!

I have lots of coreopsis and shasta daisies and snow in summer. Are these plants too common to bring? I don't know their varieties either. Should I bother? Sandy

Sandy - bring them - all my extra stuff that no one has specifically asked for is going into the 'leave some, take some' circle - that way I get to unload some of what I have way too much of, to swap for something someone else brings (and leaves in the 'leave some, take some' circle) that I have zero or not enough of.....bring it on over!

PS - and sometimes people are shy and have difficulty coming out and requesting things in pre-arranged trades - this 'circle' allows even the most shy person to fully participate and have fun sharing what they have for what they want.

Want to make sure I have everything covered from email requests...

Less than 5 mins away by car (2 km east on Hwy 7) are Sheridan and Pine Ridge Nurseries. Both stores are clearing their perennials - Sheridan 30% and Pine Ridge 50% IIRC.

I've been up to my eyeballs in tomato harvest and my livingroom is a mountain of canning jars. I'm very new to the whole perennial idea and have no clue how to divide what I have. All I really have to trade or give away are various vegetable seeds and maybe the odd flower seed packet. I also have some extra seedling pots for Spring planting. If that's enough to warrant showing up for anyone's extra perennial divisions, we can make the trip. I know the Munchkin really had fun at the Spring swap and was asking if we could go to a Fall one, just not sure if anyone's interested in what I can offer. If any of you would consider bringing extra cuttings or divisions (no clue how that works really) of peony, bleeding heart, lilac, or clematis, we'd be very appreciative. Someone, I can't remember who, gave us some love lies bleeding with long tails and I'd just like to say thank you on behalf of the Munchkin who loves playing with it and making nature crafts out of it.

Julianna - not sure how great my lilac roots look above ground but they were potted up almost 2 months ago, so it is bound to be growing roots underground so I can bring a couple for you - don't have anything left that you listed, but have plenty of groundcover perennials if you like to take some home with you.

Hi all my gardening friends:

I am planning to come tomorrow just to share the fun!

I don't wish for anything, but I am bringing just a few plants, namely, one eastern redbud seedling (only 5 in. tall but ready to be planted in the ground), one medium sized umbrella plant, one tiny rooted umbrella plant, one rooted ficus tree cutting (10 in. tall) and two peace lilies. I hope there will be takers for them.

This is my first full year of gardening and it is quite an experience. I need time to digest what I have learned this past summer. That's why I am holding back from acquiring more new plants.

I am looking forwarding to seeing you all tomorrow!

I am so sorry everyone .. I just made it home after getting REALLY lost!!! I left home with my truck packed at 7:30 am .. and I got lost!! I cant believe I only made it back home now. It's 2:09 .. I dont even know where I ended up :o( I never even made it to the Theater. I am so upset about missing the swap and letting everyone down. Again please accept my apologies I can't believe this happened. I hope someone scoops up those plants. I feel horrible :o(

I went back to the FREE PLANTS area and except for some broken bits and broken pots and the sign, it was all gone!!! I cleaned it all up so we wouldn't get any flak from the Town of Markham :0 Maybe they will let us use their parking lot again next year???

I'm not sure who brought these - maybe ceraholt, but the plant is like 'silver mound' only much bigger and more greenish. Should I cut them back now or just plant and let them flop over until spring comes - sorry I don't know the name of the plant but think maybe ceraholt brought them.

Nadia - I'm useless at germinating basil so will look forward to your tomato and basil seedlings come the spring swap!

Yes, that probably would be me. I loaded all my plants in the van the night before and planned on bringing sticky labels to the swap but forgot the labels. It may be best to let the Artemisia (silver mound) flop instead of chop for extra storage before winter. I received a plant from the swap in the past that was chopped and it didn't come up the next spring. When I recently dug it up, it was still alive with lots of white roots. I have my fingers crossed for next spring. The artemisia will look much nicer in the spring. You won't see the unsightly stems.
I was going to ask you about an earlier comment you made about a shredder. Do you make your own mulch? How much did the shredder cost?

Ceraholt - thanks for the Artemisia and will leave it be until the spring.

My 'YardWords' chipper/shreddar was a gift - a couple years back - $199 from Cdn Tire on sale from $300.00 - I thought I would use it for leaves but it's crap for leaves (takes too long as the intake shoot is designed for branches)compared to my self-propelled mulching & bagging mower which is perfect to shred leaves.

I pull out the shreddar/chipper for branches & it is absolutely perfect to make pinecone top dressing/mulch as long as the pinecones aren't fully open - otherwise they don't fit into the top shoot - closed and semi closed pinecones with a width of up to 2 inches do great and make such nice top dressing.

FWIW - the YardWorks shredder is on sale again for the same price at CdnTire now. If you're looking to shred leaves, I'd invest in a good lawnmower before getting this model to shred leaves, but it is a good little workhorse on branches & pinecones to chip for mulched top dressings.

Thanks so much for the info. After spending $400 on mulch this year, this is a bargain. There are bald spots already! I will ask hubby to get this for me for X-mas. My parents have tons of cleared trees from their lot. I could use the branches perhaps or chop it really fine and gather cones from their cottage.

If I had to do it all over again, and know what I do now, I would recoomend the Black & Decker BV9000 Leaf Eater (at Costco for $79.00) verses buying the $300.00 Yarkworks 'chipper' for $199.00 at Cdn Tire.

You can make alot more 'mulch' with leaves than you can with sticks & cones......in way less time. (and keep that little extra money to put towards that self propelled lawn monster that's on sale now at Home Depot or towards a new snow blowing machine you know you really really want and just haven't decided on which monster model you simply must have.)

I'm in love and have put my chipper in retirement as this little Black & Decker monster has shredded over 20 bags of maple leaves this afternoon - the front garden looks amazing with at least 6 inches of fine leaf mulch - haven't used the shoulder strap bagger yet because I've been having way too much fun using the 'leaf collection system' to put the pulverized leaves into - then running out to dump the garbage bins into the front gardens - more fun than I should be allowed! I'm going on a 'leaf hunt' tomorrow at the neighbours because I've vaccumed up and mulched every twig & leaf in my yard.......

Wow! How cool is that! I was telling my dad about the chipper idea and he has one for the cottage. I guess he bought a heavy duty one for clearing his lot a long time ago used from a friend. The blades are in need of repair so this is great! Do you have to pull the garbage can along behind you or does it pull along as you pull the leaf eater? Does it weigh much?

Well the accordian style tubing that attaches to the garbage can stretches a good distance, so I haven't actually picked up and moved the garbage can around the yard yet - I've knocked the garbage can over a couple of times, and just kept on vaccuming because the system is sealed to the garbage can with a fabric covering, so the contents stay inside and I just keep mulching and vaccuming until I need to find another pile of leaves and drag the garbage can along behind me - usually with the garbage can in tow sideways, LOL

Because it is electric, it weighs maybe a pound at the most - the lightest weight gas ones are around 10lbs and that's before gas is added in, so after awhile I'm sure my arms would ache if I had a gas powered one as I don't have much upper body strength.

You will love love love this electric machine - I actually went bagging leaves at the town hall and dragged the bags home and put them in my garage (about 30 bags) so I can mulch and shred them thru this machine in the garage while keeping myself dry as it's been raining for a couple of days here and expected to continue raining on and off until Wednesday. I swear if I could find a car adaptor, I'd be hauling this thing with me with my driverside window rolled down so that I could hang my arm out the window with my 'leaf hog' to suck up all those wonderful leaves along the curb on the major roads in town, lol!

Disclaimer - all information contained within my posts is just an enthusiatic endorsement for a darn good piece of garden equipment that is worth my money invested. I'd buy shares in this product if I could but I'm currently saving my money for either a snow blade attachment for the sitdown tractor or a new self propelled blower....woo hoo, bring on the snow after those leaves!! It was not only useful but also entertaining to read your post, but I laughed the most at myself, since I realized that I have the leaf blower (Toro) for several years and have not even thought of using it to shred leaves. IÂve only used it to blow leaves in one corner and than I would bag them. I completely forgot that the gadget could be used as a vacuum and shredder as well. Good thing that I remembered, and check it out before IÂve run to the store to buy new one. IÂve tried mine and it works as vacuum and shredder!!! It is not connected to container so I got really tired of hauling all that leaves on my shoulder. It is not very fast or easy to use but is good enough for now. IÂll save my money to put towards that self propelled lawn monster you mentioned.
