Geez hon...if it weren't for bad luck, you just wouldn't have any luck at all would you? I'm so sorry about your dl's. Some people are just low down to steal a person's plants. Thank goodness I'm way out in the country where you don't have to worry about anyone stealing your dl's!

I don't understand it. Most of my neighbors could care less about their yards. And I doubt they would know what kind of plant these were. Of course anyone could be visiting a neighbor and decide they looked good. But neither had any flowers yet, though maybe one had a bloom. If I order more from Gene now, they'd be bare root. I was going to order those plus more of a few others, but now with this root problem, I don't know what to do.

That's a big bummer, about the tree roots and the idiots taking your dl's. But, you know what they say about karma...

We visited a daylily farm last week (out in the country - dirt road; they had their own bridge to their farm). The lady said the sheriff of that county warned her that people were stealing plants. My son asked her about one
plant he had seen or read about, and she had even labeled it with another name in case somebody came up and knew what she had. Sorry about your problem. Sarah

When I lived in Chicago I had an open house and when the people left --
someone had wandered into my little leanto greenhouse and stole pieces of a ladyslipper species plant--they butchered the parent plant taking part of it--I wish they would have stolen the whole thing--anyway I nursed it back--
it took 4 years to bloom again!!!

Ugh! How low will some people go? What I have a hard time understanding is how a person who obviously likes flowers can steal from another person and live with their conscience. I mean, I know people who go to church and consider themselves Christians have stolen and I don't understand that either. But, I digress. I'm sure you will be checking out the neighbors yards to see if YOUR daylily is blooming in their flowerbed! That would be a dilemma, because I would be soooo tempted to get it back :) I don't think I could live with MY conscience if I did that though.

I'm very sorry that you are having such a rough time getting your daylily bed going, Lin. I noticed that you still have some grass growing. Is there any way to till up some more lawn to create a brand new bed? Maybe a raised bed in the sun. I'm sure you've already considered this and maybe it's not the best solution. This will turn around yet and you will find a way. You seem very determined. It is very frustrating though, I'm sure.

Just a thought - do you have any problems with squirrels or racoons? Whenever I plant anything, I have to go back the next morning and re-plant it if it is still around. And since my back yard is not easily accessable to anyone, the culprits are the wildlife. They usually come to inspect the freshly tilled earth for bugs, worms and aroma from the blood meal that I use to fertilize (they will tear open a bag of the stuff if I leave it out). Hopefully your thief is a 4 legged varmite instead of the usual 2 legged variety.

And since I do have some daylilies and irises in an area where they can be a)enjoyed by all; or b)easily stolen, I left the poison ivy growing through it . . .

Sorry to hear you have "sticky fingers" in your neighborhood(be it the 4 or 2 legged kind). Hopefully you'll find it moved somewhere by the critters and still viable. daylilies are tough plants to kill.

Hi Vickie, Renee and Kim, I don't know what I'd do with this huge bed, if I moved a bed somewhere else. Farther back would be more shade. I'll have to think of something. I asked a friend to ask her brother in law (who is owrking on her yard, and very reasonable) if he'd do a project for me. I don't think it was one of my neighbors. Few bother with their lawns or plant anything. And the one who does, wouldn't steal. And she doesn't plant much, but has a very nice lawn. I think it might be someone who was visiting a neighbor. Renee, the two stolen were in pots. Don't think an animal would or could have done it. ?? Kim, do you think an animal could have gotten a 2 gal pot?? We do sometimes have coons, but they usually stay in the back yard, which has a sort of mini forest back there.

The daylily grower I got my plants from told me when people come, he does not tell them the cost of his more expensive ones unless they inquire about buying one, and does not tell which ones that are in his garden are valuable. I must admit I live in not very well to do area. Most of my neighbors don't seem to plant anything. I'm happy if their grass is green. I have a friend who always remembers which house is mine, as it's the greenest lawn on my side of the street. Let alone that I have flowers and such planted. But my next door neighbor on one side has many people coming and going. With mother's day coming up, I think maybe someone decided, "Whatever plant that is, it would make a good Mother's Day gift. It does not even say daylily. I'm sure they will have no idea what they have. Well, at least it was not the blue-eyed butterflies I bought, which were the most expensive ones. It just is also upsetting that I wanted to plant the mate to the one I have planted in that bed, and now I have en empty hole there. I could plant the white one next to it, which had the mate stolen too.

Raccoons could rip the daylilies up out of the two gallon pots but not carry the pots off.
