Uh Oh - bad daylily problem....

I've had daylilies for many, many years... in the last few days, I've taken notice of at least 30 or 40 daylily leaves and they are split down the middle and looking very sick. I've cut those off, but wondering what is causing this and gosh, after all these years - a problem... :0(

Are they being eaten by slugs? cutworms? I've never had this problem... thanks

If it were slugs or snails I would think the edges of the leaves would be damaged(chewed) or just holes and not just showing a split down the middle.
Cutworms I'm not sure about but wouldn't they show the same damage as slugs and snails?

Hope you find out what is happening to them. I've never heard of leaves splitting on daylilies but there is always something new to learn.

IMHO, has nothing to do with Verticellium from what I see. Just doesn't look like the pattern. The leaf spots are likely due to wet weather IMHO, giving something an advantage over the tree. Leaves are rarely perfect this time of year, so unless it gets allot worse, I would not worry about the spots at this point. While I don't know if jean has the right pathogen (would require more extensive testing(, I do think they have the right ideal. Namely that it is something that got into a small wound etc. Your pictures seem to chow that it is working top downward. As for what to do about it, as indicated before, it looks like your doing exactly what needs to be done. That is pruning out to well below the affected area, with proper disposal of pruned material (i.e. burned or in the trash, but not in compost). As for the mulch, it probable has nothing to do with it. However I will say this about cypress mulch. From what I have been told, in many cases this mulch is obtained by removing entire tree from the swamp ecosystem for no other purpose than to make mulch. At this point the ecosystem is often so disturbed that seedling cypress do not survive. It is for this reason I don't use cypress mulch any longer. Arktrees

Tym, As Pirate Girl said, you're too concerned about watering these. They'll be fine. They are drawing resources from their lower leaves in order to live, but this takes months. As the resources are depleted, the lower leaves dry up. You can remove or not. This is a natural process, especially when they're in growth - as new growth appears, old growth dies. As you note, until there are roots there is no reason to water them. The only condition where you would is one you can't supply right now - lots of sun and warmth, a broad expanse of sidewalk or a heating mat, and the plant sitting in pure pumice in a pot that will warm easily. Until you have those conditions when an Aloe is rootless, watering is fruitless - or rather it's worse than fruitless, because it will kill the plant. Just be kickin' it with the Aloe - stand it up in a nice sturdy vase/container (a 155mm shell casing works great), or leave it potted in dry soil, and spritz as needed. It will be fine until growing time. I hope this has convinced you, because frankly I'm out of words.

Sckndck- Your custom nursery mix obviously is doing the drainage thing. As that breaks down over the years you might want to add bark bits. Perlite sucks. When you flood a pot with water all the wonderful little white bits rise to the surface and stick to the sides and look like...ugly white stuff. Forever. It gets stuck in the cracks of your deck. Forever. It never gets darker or goes away. Dark pumice is SO much better. Bark is best for me. -Babka

I read he was 14 when he first touched his sisters as they slept. I do feel he was old enough to know better ( not to touch his sisters privates which I'm sure won't get them pregnant btw) . Like some one said earlier , he was in a situation that didn't seem to allow any sort of outlet for his sexual wondering. He was home schooled and surrounded by little kids. ---I recall a couple of instances of teen boys acting out this way with me when I was a youngster, they didn't get away with much but they certainly crossed the line. Now as a teacher at school I see plenty of little boys acting out. I'm completely bothered when I hear kids are DATING in the third grade. It's nuts what kids think these days! I just feel like asking them ’who drives'? --anyway I can't imaging why the Duggar parents would want to put this out for the public, like some people are expecting. Most families take care of their kids problems within their own home. His parents surely talked to the girls , most likely with their pastor . ---- I wonder if Lena Denham is being put over the fire?

I was thinking spring sickness as well. They usually recover from it.

Thanks for the replies. I've googled but hadn't found any pictures showing what I have.

I had to cut the leaves off - was that okay? My husband thought maybe the hailstones had something to do with the splitting - we did have a storm last week with lots of hailstones - never had that before!

I will put slug bait down anyway - but mostly it's the splitting of the leaves right down the middle that baffles me.

Didn't I read on here a couple years ago that high wind would do that??? Anyone else remember or am I just dreaming this?

I was going to say hail. We had some hail and it ripped up some of my hosta and lilies. Well it really ripped through lots of plants that had already put out leaves and bent over some of the canes on some plants. The weather man said tonight to expect tennis ball size hail tomorrow night so I hope he is WRONG!! Grrr.... Judy

Hail will definitely shred leaves, so that well may be it. I have a couple of daylilies that have exhibited what I call spring sickness for years. Some of the new leaves emerge crinkled or misshapen, or seem to be dwarfed and unable to grow at all. Eventually this straightens itself out with no help from me. Between those two choices I'd go with hail damage as your problem.

slug bait, netting, laundry baskets over plants (in case of hail), beer dishes .... a gardener's work is never done..but oh, so worth it
