This one is new from last year.

And look how the daylilies are still growing! How could I see a vole under all of that?

Tired! I've been working in the garden for a little more than 6 hours, but I feel great!

Your new iris is gorgeous Kay. You lily bed looks awesome! My lilies seem to have grown so much. Have you been having vole trouble? They hit my gardens last spring for the first time ever and I hate the little creatures. This year so far they have gotten two camellias so I am on the look out daily for chewed on plants. Good luck with your voles and I hope they go away and stay away for both of us. Judy

Wow! Its all looking very pretty and green.The Iris is very pretty, too.My cat killed one of them critters yesterday.I found it laying by a plant in the yard.at least, she didnt put it by my front door this time.Everything she kills, she puts it right in front of the front door,I guess so I will see it when I go out.

Hi everyone, Well, I am double posting this in 2 forums - I hope nobody minds. As promised, here I am posting about what in the world I've been doing all summer while traveling to & fro Wisconsin. As some of you already know, I work with fish-eating birds: cormorants, pelicans, herons, egrets, gulls, wood storks, etc. My husband and I have been working in Wisconsin for the past 3 years, but we also regularly work in Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan, Ontario, and a few other places. Yes, we are a husband + wife team, working together out of the same office. Many people are surprised that we work together, but it is great. We make a fantastic team, and are often at our best under challenging field conditions. Great minds think alike, and being dear friends & in love sure helps too. (ok, enough with the mushy stuff). So now for a few photos from the vegetation surveys we did this month. Background: We are working on remote islands in Lake Michigan, around the Door Co. Peninsula area. All the islands have nesting double-crested cormorants and herring gulls. Some also have nesting Am. white pelicans and Canada geese. Back in April, we put up some 6 ft x 6 ft pens (we call them exclosures) to exclude the cormorants because they damage vegetation with their nesting activities (too much POOP!). So then we went back in August to catalog everything that grew in the pens, by plant species, and weighed it to also determine biomass. That meant breaking out the field guides, studying up on botany and the flora of Wisconsin, and bringing the plant presses for species we couldn't identify on the island. We compareed the exclosure plots to some "control" plots, which had nothing but 4 wooden stakes at the corners. We had 45 plots to do on 3 islands, plus another 3 islands down by the city of Green Bay that we did simple vegetation surveys on (no pens). It was alot of work, but very interesting. The bottom line: there are lots of nonnative species on those islands, like motherwort, catnip, pigweed, common mallow, stinging nettle and sow thistle. The native vegetation was primarily lambsquarter and smartweed species. Almost done clipping this 1-meter plot: Looking for small plants beneath the lambsquarter The finished, sampled 1-meter subplot Who would even know what this was?!?! I saved seeds to winter sow and see if I can't figure it out. The very last veg plot to measure. You can tell, because we look so happy! A friend found crawling across the plant press The stinging nettle I hacked through to make us a nice trail to get to the center of the island. At least its not poison ivy! Ok, that's all for now. I graduated high school in a class of 160 students back in 1983. The local paper published the honor roll each quarter and 1 or 2 students would have earned all A's for that period; always the same 1 or 2 students who were brilliant and who truly worked their tails off to get perfect A's. Now, almost 30 years later, my mom still subscribes to that same local paper and they still publish the honor roll each quarter. The graduating class each year is still around 160 students, but now, each quarter, a full 10% (at least 16 students if not more) is on the honor roll for straight A's. How could the curriculum have been dumbed down THAT much -- it's a terrible shame and it's not fair to anyone that straight A's have been made so much easier to obtain.

hehe "don't let girls play with boy toys" LOL! Just what do you think makes it a gender specific toy? LOL! Does this mean that you don't like boys that wear dresses? ROFLMAO !!! What if the little girl is a lesbian? Would you then expect her to conform to rigid gender roles that have no basis in necessity? What does gender role play have to do with the selfish demanding behavior that we call "brat like". From reading the news as of late, with all the lawsuits and criminal charges, it looks like many Christians are pretty sick people. lonepiper its fine... its just that when KKNY and TOS get involved in a post it always goes back to children of divorce should be coddled for the rest of their lives and they are not held accountable for any of their actions its always the adult's fault never the child's fault. officer pulls you over ... You get out of the car "playfully swat" him on the shoulder and say hey buddy F U ... what is that officer going to do? Is he going to perceive it as "friendly behavior" or his he going to place you under arrest for assault? and disorderly conduct? Child forgets homework... teacher says you are going to stay after school for not doing your homework... child says "you can't tell me what to do ... you're not my mother!!" then "playfully swats" teacher on the shoulder what happens to that child? Children should be treated like children and taught be respectful of all adults within reason... they should be told that you can tell a stranger to go pound tar. Anyone who touches them in bathing suit area needs to be disrespected and they need to tell an adult. They need to be taught to be afraid of strangers and be on the look out for molesters ... they should be taught how to become decent adults... they cannot swear at you hit you or other wise disrepect you Yes respect is fear ... fear of the unknown... Everyone one has said ... I would never do "that" my mother would kill me!!! would your mom really kill you NO but you were never really sure. Babies momma = saint hood. Babies daddy = trust fund.

That iris is just lovely. Won't be long now before there is lots and lots of TB iris bloom for you. Everything looks so green and growing so well in the gardenshot.

Look how lush your daylilies are, they look ready to bust out in bloom any day. Lovely iris, I like the colors. So nice to start seeing iris, isn't it. I should have a couple in bloom this morning, you are making me antsy to go out & inspect.
Voles really attacked my garden last year, I saw their tunnels all over the place. I didn't really see that they ate any plants, but I lost a couple that I think they dislodged. My cats caught several. I lost several daylilies overwinter, & I think maybe the voles/moles, whatever they are, ate them.

WOW. Love to see all that daylily foliage and your garden looks so neat and you've mulched everything already. Still no scapes?

Iris foliage here is still growing and I finally cleaned out all the beds and trimmed off the dead foliage. I'm so happy to know that all the dividing/transplanting I did last year are growing. :-).

I kept wanting to ask what brand of greenhouse did you get? I've been on the greenhouse/garden structure forum over the last year reading everyone's comments on what they bought as well on the Mydaylilies site reading about experiences. One day I'll finally get one or we will build it.

I have way with the voles. I have bought several products (and have one on order from Gardensupply) but the bait stations have been the most productive. I lost three rose bushes, and one daylily and a very well established butterfly bush to them.

The neighborhood cats have discovered the beasts, and I see several different cats at times, but Ive seen only a couple of new tunnel entrances this season.

Jean, Hooray for the cat! Yes, our cat delivers them to the front door too.

The iris show should start very soon...there are lots of bud spikes up.

Julia, I never have daylilies until the iris are almost through. The foliage is the most lush it has ever been, though.

Kay!! So SO pretty, the pic of your daylily bed. I always kind of inwardly struggle b/c I'm not a large fan of daylily foliage (excuse the pun) but I love the flowers so much, however they look so springy and pretty in your garden.

That mulch is worrying me to death since the voles tunnela are hidden by it.

Cracking the concrete. I will put Miracle Grow on them in the next couple of days, and hope to get the foliage sprayed with seaweed too...we'll just see how it goes.

Cindy, it is a pretty little thing. The colors are really nice.
