I think of daffodils as something between other plants, not the other way around. I have lots of daylilies, they work very well with daffs. Plus for taller summer color try bulb lilies. Both asiatic and oriental as they bloom in sucession so you get a longer period of flowering time.

Is verbena a perennial for you? Mine started blooming about a week or so before the azaleas.

All the dianthus is about to take off, both Cheddar pinks and Sweet William.

Candytuft continues, a good perennial, long blooming.
Echinacea has big buds, few open blooms. May is perennial time, mostly.

Oh, almost forgot Spiderwort. It blooms before most everything else perennial.

Remember there are early-, mid-, and late-blooming daffs. My late-blooming daffs haven't even started yet. Other perennials/bulbs that come into play once the Daffs are mostly done include: Ipheion, Scilla hispanica, Phlox divaricata, Columbine, Dicentra, Celandine poppy, Dianthus, and Allium 'Globemaster'.

My daffs have progressed from all yellow to nearly all white. I want to add some candytuft, but I didn't get any this year when it was in the store and now it's unavailable already from the growers. Lots of women are mad about that. We had it for about a week.

I need some dicentra too. I had some two years ago, but it failed to return last spring.

Spiderwort needs to be in my garden. Maybe I should transplant some violets into the beds. I'm just worried about them taking over. They front hill of my yard is absolutely covered, going on three weeks.

Verbena Homestead is the only perennial variety. Again, it failed to return, too wet.

I want to find some native phlox. I don't care much for the ones we've had in the store. The bright pink along the highways would look great in my garden, I think. Too much yellow until the azaleas pop. Too much yellow in the summer from all the rudbeckia. I need to think about more colors. I'm concentrating on reds and purples this year. I just can't help but add more rudbeckia though. It goes all summer and never skips a beat.

Our daffs were very late this year due to the rough winter. They were still blooming Easter (April 4) just as the tulips were starting. I have some Darwin tulips that come back nicely every year. In fact, they've been so pretty this year I've decided to buy more to go in the beds by the sidewalk so passers-by can enjoy them as well. :-)

I grow tulips in the same spot as my daffodils. So when the daffodils are done, the late season tulips are still blooming. Once the tulips end, the alliums and the iris are just starting to bloom. The bleeding heart is also blooming around this stage. Somewhere mid season, the delphiniums and salvias are growing. My garden is a compact one so the plants are growing close to each other.

My daffs are blooming and now some of the tulips began yesterday. I bought pink creeping phlox from HD a few weeks ago. I have been planting my WS successes for the past 2 1/2 days, but half of a day was spent digging and preparing a new flowerbed,wanted to get rid of an Azelea that has lacebug, but I know my husband won't spray but once and it hasn't been doing well for last 3 yrs. The roots of it must be in China! I took the lopers and cut it down to ground level and my man that does hard labor and prunning for us will have to deal with it. I think the azelea roots might be tangled with the roots from a big tree near by. I even used the hachet to cut some of the roots. I still have some WS to sow yet, plus some other plants a new gardening friend gave me on Wednesday,, I've mulched around all I've sown, hopefully will finish up on Monday, weather permitting. I have some white candytuft seeds, that I have not opened yet. Shall I send them to you? Tom, you know you can shop elsewhere, just won't get your discount.
