Oh, I do have blooming flowers right now. Columbines and salvia greggi, but they are too tall for the spot I need to fill.

Lenten rose, oxalis, lisianthus, snowdrops, kwanza cherry, roses, star jasmine, indian hawthorne, mock orange, alamanda.

Several others just finished, or are about to bloom.

Geraniums, kalanchoes, roses, amaryllis, chives, freesias (though those are starting to finish up) and--very soon now--gardenias. : )

OK...I'm going to cheat. I had NO perennials until I planted them last month. However, none were in bloom or had buds at the native nursery at the time I bought them. Some didn't really look too alive at that time, but I was assured they were.

So, blackfoot daisy budded out right away and has bloomed non-stop ever since planting. I wasn't sure I was going to like that plant, but I would definitely get more of it if I had the room. Verbena and salvia greggii are also in "light" bloom.

As for shrubs and trees, my TX mountain laurel is finishing up, Indian hawthorne is in early bloom, and my Shantung maple Fire Dragon is all finished. Whatever holly has the teeny, tiny white flowers is also in bloom. All the shrubs are established but the maple was planted in dormancy back in February.

Right now in my beds I have antique roses blooming like crazy. Also blooming right now are corepsis, amarylis, yesterday today tomorrow, salvia(red,pink), firecracker plant, lantana, louisiana iris, african lilies and my toad lilies are blooming too. My angel's trumpet tree is covered in buds and I have a few daylilies putting out buds. Oh, and my oleanders are blooming.

I still have pansies blooming, plus irises, dianthus, clematis, roses, creeping phlox, winter creeper, a couple of red poppies, rockcress, some blue salvia, huechera, strawberry geranium, some kind of little spreading ground cover with a yellow bloom (ranunculus variagated???), snapdragons, and one lonely little coneflower. But it's sooo cold outside. I went to the Tarrant County College Plant sale Wednesday and now I've put them in the enclosed patio until it warms up.

I've got lots of color now. Here's what I can think of.

The natives you can plant and neglect: Brazos Penstemon; gold, pink and burgundy columbines; and Jerusalem sage

Those you need to nurture a little: roses, roses and more roses! azaleas and encore azaleas

Iris! the old garden types you plant and neglect as well as the new rebloomers you need to fertilize!

tubers planted late fall, these you'll need to lift when foliage dies: anemone giants, giant ranunculus

pansies are still around too, but not pers. for me.

Not too many that I would call perennials...spanish lavender, spiderwort, daylily and mealy sage. I have lots of spring annuals that I got for a color fix.

Oops! Shouldn't have listed pansies..they aren't perennial for me either (a gray moment). But I too have Columbines (a burgundy and rose and a couple of yellow), some wave petunias and a couple of wallflowers blooming also. I just love spring!

Rick, how do you like allamanda? I saw some at Lowe's next to the Yellow Bells & asked the employee there about it & she said it was the same as Yellow Bells. I wasn't so sure & came home to look it up & it is not the same, more tropical, and not as drought tolerant. Still, it's really pretty.

Yellow wallflower, creeping phlox (pink and lavender) snapdragons, iris, spiderwort, blue-eyed grass, redneck lupine, and climbing yellow rose.

Anemones, leucojum are finishing up, bluebonnets, coral honeysuckle, iris, snapdragons, Texas gold columbines, lyreleaf sage is just starting to bloom, oxalis, roses are just about to bust out of their buds, and I think that is just about it.

I have some roses, greggis, iris, poppies, soapwort, strawberries, catmint. Larkspur and more poppies have many buds and just need some sun. I'm in DFW area.

Roses of course, iris, poppies, weigelia, geraneums, strawberries, columbines, clematis, salvias, and daisies. Zillions of buds on more of the roses, daisies, poppies, clematis, altheas, iris, daylilies, hydrangeas and larkspur. This little cold snap has me a bit miffied with all those buds just getting ready to pop. Cheryl

Damianita, ruby grass, black foot daisy, four nerve daisy,native verbena, ice plant, yellow primrose?, jerusalem sage, and black iris. My mom gave me the black iris plants. Anyone ever seen them before? They are strange.

I have a Louisiana Iris called Black Gamecock, but it really is a rich, dark purple. Are yours truly black.

Perennials & shrubs that are blooming for me right now on the northwest side of the Dallas area:

Intermediate Bearded Iris are winding down from a four week spectacular show, and Tall Bearded Iris are just beginning to bloom.

Lots of salvias: blue salvia nemorosa 'Marcus' & 'East Friesland', as well as red salvia greggi.

Antique Roses: especially 'Gruss an Aachen', 'Pink Gruss an Aachen', & 'Reine des Violettes' ... those are covered in fragrant blooms.

You've listed some of these already - but here's what I have in NW Austin:

Roses, Iris, Salvia greggii, S.'Coral Nymph' and S.'Nuevo Leon', blue skullcap, coral honeysuckle, Mazus reptans, culinary sage, one clematis, one of the pink gauras, Texas Betony, and many plants of the 'Telstar' dianthus, which is rarely without a flower or two all year.

Shrubs blooming are Cenizo, Mock orange, weigela, a couple of bridal wreath-type Spiraeas, Indian Hawthorns, Michelia/Banana shrub, and the last of the Texas Mountain Laurel and Lady Banks rose.

Bulbs are purple oxalis, white oxalis, and some Amaryllis just opening.

Budded and ready to pop are the white Star Jasmines, more clematis, more roses, more Amaryllis, 'Moonshine achillea', reseeded larkspur plants,and fragrant yellow Oleander.

As to what will still be blooming on Monday, who knows? We're at 38º now, and freeze is a real possibility tonight. Those who grow peaches have another bad night ahead.

The buds are truly black. I only have one that is half way open and up close it does look like a deep dark purple. But, from 5 feet away, it looks black. Do you think it is a Black Gamecock? I hope they do wind up purple. Black flowers bother me. :)

my dwarf snapdragons have been blooming since the beginning of march! they've looked great all year...a little limp in the winter, and a little burned in the summer, but well worth it for all this spring color!

In the tiny space that I call my garden, I only have spiderwort and oxalis in bloom; so I have blue, white and pink flowers and purple foliage :-) One of the columbines planted a month or so ago is showing buds too.

For those of you who have spiderwort (I assume it's the same thing I call widow's tears?) where do you have it growing? I have some that needs to be moved. Right now it's in an east facing garden in shade. I don't know where else it will thrive, except under a tree. How invasive is yours? Mine spreads a lot but doesn't seem to crowd out other things.

My spiderwort is new, I planted it probably 6 weeks ago in a fairly shaded bed (or it will be now that the leaves are coming out on the trees) so I have no idea if it will be a thug. Marti, do you want some of that iris? It is literally crawling out of its pot, I have such limited water space now.

Well, I had planted my spiderwort last spring, but I think it got too much sun (early morning and then a couple of hours in the afternoon!) It wilted away to nothingness during summer. It came back in the fall though, so I moved it to a morning-sun-only location. It's really too soon to tell how invasive it is. So far, all I can say is that it stayed green in the winter, and seems vigorous and pretty now! It did seem quite easy to pull up when I transplanted it though.

You might keep checking the spot where it was anchita. I thought I had all mine up one time too, but it came back.

Tally, I was about to feel that something was wrong with my flowers...until I looked at your zone.

My dianthus and gerberas bloom year-round, but they especially like this time of year. My mouse ear coreopsis is blooming, and my azalea that I planted last fall has suddenly exploded. Although it's already peaked, for a while there my columbine looked like it had yellow fireworks bursting all over it. I was especially pleased with that, because I thought I had lost it after foolishly planting it in the dead of summer. I was so pleased, in fact, that I went out and bought two more this spring. I also have a volunteer that sprouted in the middle of my yard last summer that was so pretty I moved it into a bed. It's full of purple blooms right now - I'm pretty sure it's some type of petunia.

Sadly, once again, my gardenia isn't blooming, and doesn't even have buds - but I may have found out why. I bought a new desk this weekend, and in cleaning out the old one, I found the tag for it, and saw that it advises pruning off the previous summer's new growth in winter - which I've never done. I'm going to assume that encourages blooming, and will make a point of doing it this year.

I think that's all of the existing perennials that are blooming - right now my yard is crazy with color but the rest are either annuals or are newly planted this spring.

My rose bush is blooming (and has a ton of buds on it), but everything else was planted this year. Not all of them had buds or blooms when I planted, though.
