I'm sorry, I should have explained. These lilies were covered all winter. I uncovered them a little a time and they have been fully uncovered about 10 days.

As long as the temp is above freezing, your daylilies will be fine. Before the temp dips below freezing (or frost), simply put a 5-gallon bucket or pot (tape over the holes)or a paper grocery bag (weighted down) or even a sheet or blanket over your daylilies. There is enough heat radiation from the ground, your daylilies will be fine. Once the temp outside rises above freezing, uncover your daylilies. If the temp is about to go back below freezing again cover them up again.

Once daylilies are established, they are pretty hardy.

I'm here in central Illinois too, you should do fine, if worried do as suggested above with some covering. If you cover them with say basket or bucket you might want to put a brick on top of item as the wind might do more damage with these items blowing off and around then the temp. My plants can take a pretty good kicking every spring and seem to always either make it through without notice or bounce back fairly quickly.

If I had just a few, I would cover them. With this said, I have had many nights in the mid to high 20's that did not hurt my daylilies one bit. This is with daytime temps in the 40-50 range and just a few hours at night in the 20's. Last year we had a week of temps in mid April that dipped into the low 20's at night with highs in low 40's in daytime. This was a very freaky freeze that hurt and even killed many plants, shrubs and trees, but it did not hurt my daylilies other than a few tips were frozen, very few at that. I have several hundred and stopped covering them about 2 years ago.

I am in central Illinois too. If last years spring didn't kill them all this years spring doesn't stand a chence. Last year we had 2 weeks of 70 degree temps in March then several days running in April where we never got above 30 degrees. They were a good 6 inches tall when the cold hit and most of them froze back to the ground. They bounced right back and the bloom season was right on time and the flowers were their normal glorious selves. We have several hundred cvs and most are evergreen. If you only have a few, cover them. You will be able to relax if you do.
