WOW!!!! Kay.I think you need a much bigger Trellis for that baby.You know,I wanted that rose so bad,and I bought 2 at different places,and each of them turned out to not be New Dawn.so,I never tried a 3rd time.Its just gorgeous.

My DH tickles me. He actually wanted me to plant a new Dawn at either end of that trellis. I told him to be patient, (Not his strong suit) and he is just about to admit I was right, one is enough.

I've told him he is going to have to reinforce the trellis.
Look closely at the last picture, and you can see that New Dawn has engulfed a Julia Child rose (she still soldiers on and blooms madly) and a purple clematis. The clematis is growing up through New Dawn. I got this New Dawn from Heirloom as a tiny band...3 years ago. She is a thug rose, you know.

You are saying such a delicate, pretty rose is a thug, how is that possible :) It really is stunning. Seems I hear a lot about New Dawn. If I could get rid of Japanese beetles, I would have one.

New Dawn has a delicate beauty. She is a bloom machine, especially in her flushes.

However, she grows unbelieveably well, and she grows where she will since this is a very small lateral branch...look at the thorns!

Wow! That rose is mammoth! So pretty though! I only had room for 1 rose this year so I planted Gertrude Jekyll as I heard it has a really nice smell and the blooms are like the old rose type. Last year I planted 3, Rainbow Niagra, Julia Child and Double Delight. They look like they made it through winter and I am patiently awaiting for them to branch out. If I had a spot for New Dawn, I sure wouldn't mind having that one either!

That is my Julia Child that has been engulfed by New Dawn and is still blooming merrily along. I'd bet yours will be fine. Gertrude Jekyll is a good choice. I have added a rose garden of old type roses.

The ones I planted last year are little things blooming along. I have planted several this year, and have some Austins coming. I alwys want more than I have room to plant. Always!

HAHAHA...I hear ya Kay, I am terrible for packing my gardens way too full! Whenever I see anything I like, I have to have it and worry about finding space for it when I get home! I was lucky, when I moved to this house 2 years ago it already had many roses planted (even though they had been neglected for awhile). So I have Tiffany, Perfect Moment, Peace, Iceberg, Mr. Lincoln and Lavaglut, plus a few others that didn't bloom last summer which I've since spruced them up so hopefully this year they will. Most people say that less is more but I say MORE IS MORE! HA!

P.S. I love that deep dark purple clematis you have too! Looooooove that colour in any flower! I used to have an identical one at the last house I lived at. Maybe I'll come accross another one the same and buy it this summer.......

Jason, I defintly think More is More! And Better! I have no idea what the clematis is...there is another one just like it. I planted it, but it wasn't one I had ordered, and I thought it was dead for a long time. But purple is my color.

It sounds like you are going to have some gorgeous roses...are you using alfalfa tea on them...that and manure they seem to love! But New Dawn could live on air.

Thanks for the tip on the roses Kay. I've just been using a lot of compost and they seem to like that a lot. Last year the blooms were gorgeous. I expect them to be even better this year since last year was the first year they got taken care of in awhile. The previous owners told me they didn't like roses and tore half of them out! Yikes! New Dawn certainly is lovely and so are all the other roses. I have no room for such a monster and only have three climbers myself. Yard too small for house eating roses even if they are stunners.

Kay, yes I know the drill! haha Which Austin roses did you order? I love his roses! At our old house we had Heritage, Crown Princess Margarita and a white one that I can't remember the name of. They were all really nice. Since I only had room for one this year I had to make it an Austin and that's why I chose the one I did. I just like the old style look of the bloom.........

I am getting Jude the Obscure, Kathryn Morley, William Shakespeare 2000, and Glamis Castle. I also ordered Purple Splash because I couldn't resist it. There are several more Austins I want, but no room at this time. I especially want the Generous Gardener and Golden Celebration. And Evelyn is a beauty too. I do love Abraham Darby which is my only current Austin.

Believe it or not, Jason, I actually sit in the garden and enjoy it some too. I don't just work in it although there is plenty of that also.

I believe you Kay. I am the same way. When I'm out there I'm always fiddling with something but I do stop and look around and enjoy it sometimes too!
You picked some good roses. I've seen Golden Celebration and and Abraham Darby, both are beautiful, the others I don't know but next time I'm on the Austin website I'll look them up...............

You should love WILLIAM SHAKESPEAR 2000. It is a gorgeous rose and it loves to bloom a lot. Unfortunaly mine turned out to be really badly virused and thus didn't bloom much its second year so I dug it and trashed it. I would love to get another but somehow, just haven't gotten to it.

I just planted a New Dawn today (during a thunderstorm as I wanted to get it in) and now that I see your picture, I hope I have it in a good spot & wont need to move it in a year or so.
