OT Clematis among New Dawn Blooms

This clematis has grown up through the New Dawn rose...It is pretty that way.

Great color combo and contrast, the deep purple and the light pink. I must admit I never thought of letting clematis grow up into a rose. But it sure looks good.

Well let's be honest. This clematis I just planted and never thought about it growing so high. It was on a short trellis. But folks on the clematis forum grow the clematis and roses together frequently...being careful not to have one overgrown by the other...this is what you call a happy accident. But I like it.

It just grew right up through the monster rose.It grew up and through it.

I think that an early spring flowering Type 1 clematis might be a poor choice for 'New Dawn'. These are not pruned and have amazing winter hardiness, so it will keep building up on itself as the years go by, eventually choking out the rose. It would also complicate pruning the rose. I recently inquired on another forum about growing Type 1/Atragene clematis on a tree in my front garden, and was told they tend to look very messy out of season, so it is not a good choice for a prominent location. I would definitely go with a Type 3 clematis, too. You will have some rose and clematis blooms coincide, but the clematis will add greatly to length of bloom and visual impact from the rose. Now the fun decision is what clematis you will choose! A white like 'Huldine', 'John Huxtable' or 'Alba Luxurians' would look elegant, or a light lavender-blue like 'Emilia Plater', 'Prince Charles' or 'Betty Corning' could also be very pretty. A deeper pink like 'Ville de Lyon', 'Barbara Harrington' or 'Princess Diana' would provide a striking monochromatic contrast. The darker purples would also look nice, and I love 'Rooguchi' growing with pink flowers. If you do insist on planting two clematis, make sure you give the rose a head start of at least a year. Even though the clematis also take time to mature, they will eventually be much more vigorous than the rose, even a thug like 'New Dawn'. Also, if you do choose two clematis, I would choose one classic open-faced cultivar (like 'Huldine') and one bell-shaped cultivar (like 'Rooguchi'). That way, you will not only have the contrasting colors but also the contrasting bloom forms. You can also e-mail the owner of Silver Star Vinery. She could probably help point you in the right direction. Her plants are said to be superb. I have many on order for spring :-)

New Dawn is a repeat bloomer.....it should be in bloom from May through to frost. Unless you pick a very early blooming clematis like a macropetala or alpina, you will have both the rose and vine in bloom at the same time at least once during the season. And since both of these are type 1 or no prune, I'd stick with a type 3 and let them go together :-)

Judy, you know full well that you are among fellow addicts when it comes to buying plants. And I so love the English roses...just be sure to give them plenty of room. They will need it. Vel, it is a record for me, that is for sure. It was one I got in the fall from Bill Maryott, but no way was able to resist taking pictures of those three together. Thanks Cindy, all of my early clematis are covered in buds. They are hapopy with the strange weather. Rebecca is a true red in my garden...same color as my monitor, and the blooms are large. It is close to my favorite...then I see another one and oh I love that one. You know how it is. Thany you Linda. As I've already said, I love Rebecca! kay

I am getting Jude the Obscure, Kathryn Morley, William Shakespeare 2000, and Glamis Castle. I also ordered Purple Splash because I couldn't resist it. There are several more Austins I want, but no room at this time. I especially want the Generous Gardener and Golden Celebration. And Evelyn is a beauty too. I do love Abraham Darby which is my only current Austin. Believe it or not, Jason, I actually sit in the garden and enjoy it some too. I don't just work in it although there is plenty of that also. kay

Ok, but at least you can take credit for the color combo. You must have planned this very carefully with the New Dawn rose and the deep purple clematis :-)) They look wonderful together.

I do also, Rita. Thank you. I went out and pinched one of my new clematis from Silver star back by about 2 feet. It just looked pale, and I want the clematis itself more than I want flowers today.

Thats very pretty,I think clematis planted with roses is very pretty,and at least you dont have to find a trellis for the clematis.Just use the rose climber and problem solved.Looks great together.

The colours are great together. The dark purple with the light pink is very eye catching. I went out this past weekend to some nurseries and actually found a clematis that looks to be a similar colour to yours (which I love). Not sure if it will end up looking the same or not in real life as all I had to go on was the picture on the tag and sometimes it ends up looking different in person. The name of it is Etoile Violette.

Thanks Jean, The clematis was planted on a trellis smaller than it needed, so it found its own "trellis".

Jason, Etoile Violtte is what the ones on the clematis forum said this one looked to be, so you probably got just what you wanted. It is a gorgeous, rich purple color.

They compliment each other very nicely. Gotta love those happy accidents, but if I were you I'd take the credit anyway. Like Rita said, you planted it:)

If the Japanese beetles don't like New Dawn, I may have to give this rose a try. Already have a dark clematis to go with it :) That is another thing I love about these forums, ideas galore from people far more imaginative than I.

Nancy- If you want to try a rose that looks like New Dawn but is not quite so much of a house eater, look for Awakening. Some New Dawns rebloom, others don't (depends on where you got it and if its a good (true) clone. Awakening always reblooms and doesn't grow as large. But it is hard to find.
