I've had Quilt Patch growing here for about 4 years. Moldovan intro-ed Teddy Bears Picnic which is also a brown, but I haven't bought it yet. Maybe this year. I like Quilt Patch a lot, but only bought it because my sister and I are avid quilters, and wanted to add something to the garden that addressed this bond between us.

Some other browns:

Helen Dougherty's MATTHEW MARTIN. I've seen only a few blooms on mine. (Poor thing was in much too much shade.) Regardless, I'd recommend it. The flowers are quite lovely.

Jamie Gossard's WHEN BEARS FLY. New to me last summer. The sole flower on it was -- without a doubt -- the ugliest FFO (first flower open) I've ever seen LOL. (Poor thing REALLY needed to get settled in.) I cut off the scape after making sure it was what I supposedly bought - will report back on this one this summer. Despite its dire looking flower in 07, I expect to like it a lot.

Dale Thomas's PEANUT BUTTER SWIRL. I mentioned this one in another thread here. Supposedly a "caramel brown" with "dark brown" ez. I was completely underwhelmed, but in all fairness, this was a new plant as well.

Linda mentioned TEDDY BEARS PICNIC. Mine was more purplish than brownish. Once again, a new-to-me plant. So -- once again -- I'll have to reserve judgment til this summer. However, based on vigor, I'll give it two thumbs up. I do believe I'm going to have A LOT of fans this year!

JOSEPH'S COAT (Dottie Warrell; 2000) -- this is stretching the definition of brown a bit, as it's registered as a "rose beige." No comments -- planted it here last fall. But I was intrigued by the images of it I'd seen, and Dottie was having a half-price sale....'nuf said!

Do you have the feeling that many of my plants are new? Let's just say I was very busy last year. :)

You mentioned BROWN WITCH -- I've had that one do completely amazing things for me. When it's good, it's extraordinary. Rich, glowing brown; on one memorable day, the eye was a true, vibrant purple, and the midribs were scarlet. Breathtaking! Increases like a weed here, too.

I saw QUILT PATCH (and photographed it) at one of the open gardens during the '06 national convention. I liked it! I should get that one.

Another brownish one -- Dougherty's GOLDEN GLOBE - "brownish gold"; don't have it but have seen positive remarks about it in catalogs.

Last one that comes to mind -- Jim Murphy's SIMMERING ELEPHANTS, a "greyish brown."

Oops, berryt, I just saw your question about PEANUT BUTTER SWIRL on the thread about hybridizers. As you probably already have inferred, I don't have much to say about poor PBS at this point. The color was kind of blah last summer. I suppose one could creatively call it "caramel beige," but it looked more like a pale, washy, off-colored color that I can't even name. Dale Thomas told me many people commented on it and wanted it -- in fact, I believe he didn't have much of it left -- so I ascribe its uninteresting appearance in my garden to its having been dug/shipped/the whole nine yards of a new daylily. Moral of the story is: don't judge a daylily by its first year bloom I guess. Chapter 2 occurs this year, so I'll let you know how it does.

I have Quilt Patch and Mama"s Hot Chocolate. Both have increased very well for me despite the drought we had last summer. MHC was bought just after she had bloom last year so I have no pic of her, but here is my pic of Quilt Patch, love this flower. Hope you like!

One of my favorite daylilies from last season was WHEN BEARS FLY. I'm sorry to hear yours had such a bad start lynx. I hope it does better for you next season. This was its second year for me and it didn't bloom its first year but made up for it this past year with loads of stellar blooms. I think its very unique and unusual.

Linda, I could send you some BROWN WITCH....I gave some away, and the rest is sitting in a pot at our new place. Ergo: not sure what fan count will be. But I'm sure I'll have a clump of at least 4 fans....two for you, two for me...:)

I had a hard-to-find brown -- DOUBLE MILK CHOCOLATE, an older dip double by Clarence Crochet. "chocolate self with brown rose" EZ. It was one of only two DMC plants for sale at a garden that was essentially being dug up/destroyed. I thought it had settled in, but no, it rotted.:((( I should track down the buyer of the other piece and offer to buy a fan.

There is a nice brown available over here in the UK called "Brunette". It is a self-coloured, old-fashioned flowerwith a traditional "trumpet" lily shape. The colour is a chocolatey-cinnamon brown.

I don't grow it myself-yet. I am thinking of getting it in the Autumn if I can find room to set off my golds/oranges.

Lynxe, I'll keep in mind your impression of first year blooms whenever I ask your opinion on a plant....LOL.. seems you haven't had much luck on 1st yr. Hope they have settled in and give you dynamite show this year. I wonder how much of that I'll see this year since most every dl in my garden is new. You listed a number that sound interesting, especially that Double Milk Chocolate (Crochet 99). It's not that old I wonder why it's hard to come by?

OK, am I loosing it or is the wrong picture posted out on Tinkers for WHEN BEARS FLY? Could that even possibly be the same flower pictured on J. Gossard's website?

I notice that while the picture of TEDDY BEARS PICNIC at Moldovan's site is a nice brown, it is purple on the pictures at Tinkers (validating your experience Lynxe) but at least it's the same form & eye pattern. The Tinker's picture of WHEN BEARS FLY doesn't seem to have the same form or eye pattern let alone the color is bright red.

the only pic I have seen of Brunette is in a grower's catalogue over here and unfortunately I don't have a scanner. I'll have a look around and see if I can find a pic somewhere, if not I'll contact the nursery and see if they can e-mail me a pic.

I forgot to say that it is a small-flowered variety, I think the flowers are about 3" diameter but I'll check that.

Also, there are a couple more over here in the UK that I had forgotten about.

One is called Double Coffee, a double flower in brown and cream, and also Gingerbread Man. I would say that the first one looks browner but I have seen neither in the flesh.

Well, one possible explanation is that it's just not a very good daylily lol! Who knows....nasty color? poor grower? rotter? Or none of those things. Could be anything....could simply be that more people liked others of his intros a lot more, and that one never got much interest.

My first year experiences - I am NOT the person to go by LOL. In recent years, many of my newest have been planted in pots -- and there they've stayed. (From now on, happily, I have plenty of room in the new garden.) I had a special bed for my best daylilies, but I ran out of room. So pots it was, for as long as I had 'em.

So I'm out looking at WHEN BEARS FLY on Gossard's website and start poking around.

Has anyone tried to grow BROWN EXOTICA? It looks like a nice brown tet w/similar coloring to BROWN WITCH.

Wow! His patterned eye seedlings are something else! It is absolutely amazing what is coming out in the next few years! He's got some real beauties there.

Does anyone have landscape pictures of any of these? I love the color of these flowers and would like to see what it looks like in a clump and with companion plants.

BTW, lynxe, Double Milk Chocolate is still listed at the Crochet's website. Have you checked to see if it's in stock there? I agree that if it is a finicky plant to grow then growers will not have much increase of it so it will remain hard to find. There could be other issues too that keep it scarse. Sometimes if it doesn't sell well (and browns are often out of favor) or the pictures don't do it justice, other marketing issues, etc- the growers will pitch it for better selling plants even if it is a sturdy plant.

lilyfantn - this is off subject a bit, but I wanted to say your photos in Tinker's are fantastic. I always enjoy them, and wondered who took those! Now I know! Thanks for sharing.

I came across another interesting brown daylily that I saw at Geraldine Couturier's two years ago but the photo isn't on my picturetrial, just in my desktop photo folder. Is it possible to post a photo if it isn't in a photo hosting internet place? The daylily is called CHOCOLATE DUDE. Its by a hybridizer named J. Lewis and was introduced in 1981. My photo along with another one is on the Tinker database so you can see it there. I think it is a very unusual looking daylily.

I have found a picture of "Brunette" if anyone is interested. I'm afraid that I don't know how to post links but if you Google "Apple Court" Daylilies it is either on page one or two of their daylily section and is clickable so can be made bigger.

I must admit I am quite taken with this one.

I'm not sure but I think Gingerbread Man is an orangey-brown in some areas. I certainly think it is not as rich as Brunette.

In general, pigment tends to be stronger in daylilies over here as our Northern Latitude means that the UV rays aren't as strong. That is why heavily ruffled daylilies sometimes struggle to open. Edges can also disappear.

I did a little research. Brunette is a Stout intro from 1941.

I have not found it here in the US even at the historical or Stout Memorial gardens.

I just thought I would comment on GOLDEN GLOBE. Lynxe mentioned it as browish above but hadn't heard much about it. I have this one and love it but it isn't brown to my eye. To me it looks more butterscotchy gold with rusty red on the edges. The Doughertys did describe it as brownish gold though when they registered it.
