Hey folk,

I'm mostly a lurker here, although, I have been known to post every once in a while hehe. I spend the last week doing some major upkeep on my dry garden and finally got a change to enjoy it today. Unfortunately, the winds picked up, and because the ground is so dry, we were swallowed up in clouds of dust. Still, I took to the yard and laid in the hammock for a while hehe. Your pond and garden are beautiful. Bishop's weed is the devil to get rid of. Fish need a place to hide. It makes them feel safer and they are safer. Get a black bucket and put a rock in it to hold it down on the bottom. Or use a piece of black PVC or flower pot on it's side.

I can identify, Sammy. The internet world is strange because no one can see your face or see your expression or even tell if you're a boy or girl. After awhile or years of reading what people think and seeing their gardens, it does seem like you get to know them, though. If it's any comfort, I've always known you are a girl. Whenever there are storms in Oklahoma/Texas I think about you and hope you are well. hi, Florence, this is my fourth spring here. Time has gone by so quickly. I loved the tea rose, Duchesse du Brabant, in the south, and I posted here under duchesse_nalabama, the duchesse for that rose. I still love those tea roses but I wish they loved me now! I've been looking at pictures of your beautiful Zeffy, New Dawn and Paul's Himalayan Musk for years now and loving them every time. I loved seeing your paintings, too. The garden looks mature because it's planted in polyanthas. They grow so well here and have filled in quickly. I'm still waiting for the own root gallicas and others to catch up. But soon, now, I hope. Ingrid, your Aunt Margy's Rose sure got some ooh's and ahh's at that polyantha thing I did. The polys seem to like acid soil and water, but I am thrilled that some of them do well for you. I would love to send you some of this rain we get. Since you were so kind as to come and look again, I'm posting some more pictures; at the risk of feeling like I'm boring people or showing off ... remember that conversation? Gardening here is a lot easier than some other places, but each spot has its challenges. Good gardeners just deal with what they have to, and you are a good gardener, Ingrid. Thanks for the comments, also. Backyard Daylily Garden- Work in Progress

Yes, you did the right thing planhting 18 inches apart. My daylilies on the plateau pictures are too close but I was too impatient and hated the bare look so I spaced them close in mostly groups of three. I will have to enentually take out every other group. This year I planted my daylilies 16 to 18 inches apart in the new daylily beds I made and I planted annuals in between for now to fill in. One area has a flat of Cosmos that I bought and planted between the daylilies. IN the terraces gardens not pictured here I put lots and lots of zinnias in between the daylilies plus there are other perrenials in there too. You would not believe the difference this spring from the pictures last summer. The view towards that fountain garden in back of the garage looks smashing with just the fact that the path is now green grass (hadden't seeded it yet in the pictures) and the daylilies that are growing at the base and around the fountain. The daylily plateau, which is what was referred to as the brick planter, looks even better this spring. I need to get a chance to do some weeding on it and put more mulch but it really looks good. The plateau is a pure daylily garden. Its going to be attention getting in daylily bloom season and then its just green the rest of the time.

Wonderful! I'd say you've been doing a lot of work in your garden for many years! Great choice of plants and nice placement. I love seeing some roses too. Your stone paths were well done and I appreciated seeing them in curves. Great job! I hope you continue to share your photos.

Lady lotus, thank you. I spent several hours cleaning up debris, weeds, foliage... I had gone several months without having done any of that!

Beachplants, Those paths were made from about 150 of the scalloped concrete edgers that were here lining the lawn when we first moved in. They work well to get our 4 dogs to NOT run randomly through the plantings! They tend to stay on the paths as they run back and forth through the yard.

Hoovb! Firt off, I love your blog, A Piece of Eden! I drool over the wonderful plants you have! And not at all! That darn lawn only gave me more work and problems than I could ever ask for! It was a never ending battle keeping it green in our hot summers! (I'm inland, in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley)

Pennyhal, I've been working on this garden for about three and a half years. I love the variety of plants I'm able to grow! Before running into these forums, the word garden only conjured up images of privet hedges, lawns and petunias lol. Here's a picture of the same spot as the first picture, taken in May 2008.

Great job Robert. Half of what you have doesn't grow in Bakersfield! You and Ethan and newgen with all your Majesty palms,Mangos and Annona's are having zone bust'in fun.
I'm sure too,that behind that last photo's brick wall is the blue Pacific and white sandy beaches..ahhhh..I can feel the tradewinds...
