This species rose came from my Great-grandmother's garden ruins on their old homestead place. It has a super fragrance - peppery old-rose smell. I want it to grow up over the chicken run. Birds love nesting in it and eating the rose hips in the fall & winter.

Here is my parent species rose growing up and over the back of the carport. Makes beautiful tiny red rose hips in the fall. New Dawn rose is next to her on the right.

Behind it against the wattle fence is a Climbing Red Don Juan (or Red Knight), Black and Blue salvias and Gladiolas. One the back side of the fence I have Rosa, America (cl). She is budded and will bloom soon for the first time. I hope she will someday cover that fence. In front of the yellow rose are white and pink Cleomes, just seedlings now.

I have planted several of them in various parts of my garden, and they have experienced benign neglect most of the time--no special winter treatment, fertilizer, etc. The soil here is a limestone soil and heavy clay for the most part. My plants are several years old now, and the largest is only about two feet tall. They were bare root when first obtained. All are in partial shade, two at the edges of informal planting areas under full-sized maple trees. One maple casts quite heavy shade, and that tree peony has remained quite small. The other maple tree casts dappled shade and is next to a neighbor's lawn which gets full sun all day; that one is probably the largest tree peony I have, and one of the youngest. That bed is slightly raised and mainly consists of organic matter. Another tree peony is in the center of an area of deep soil that used to be lawn. It did well initially and was larger than the others, but has suffered from the spring competition presented by a bleeding heart plant I established quite close to it. I have two on the berm of a small bank on the North side of my house; the one receiving the greater amount of sun is easily twice as large as the other one, even though they were planted at the same time. I have one in a shady place level with the ground that I had forgotten about--it is struggling a bit but still returns. Finally, one I planted in very poor soil with little preparation is still alive, but so far has not even flowered, and it certainly is not thriving. Therefore, I would say that they like a bit of a raised bed, or at least the organic matter you can put into one of those, and probably don't like wet feet or oxygen deprivation. I haven't done any special watering, but this is PA; we may get more rain than you. I have seen full grown tree peonies in the Hershey gardens. They were probably ten or so feet tall and looked a bit like broad, dwarfed trees with dark trunks. They were still sort of interesting after their spring bloom. I have also seen a few planted by gardeners in the area. They looked more like densely-leaved shrubs, from about five feet to eight feet in diameter. I think their leaf density could be partly because they were all in full sun, and also due to pruning. They all had a round shape. I have found a bit of judicious pruning can save problems. Apparently the little stalk that bears the previous season's flower dies, and can then be a source of fungus or other infection; that should be clipped off in early spring for that reason. Apparently Hershey had some fungus problems a few years ago with some of their old peony trees and they had to be removed. It can get quite humid here during the summer; possibly that was a factor. For that reason, though, you might want to see that your plants are not too crowded. All of my plants are protected from prevailing winter winds by my house, but there are a few not too far from where I live that do not have that sort of protection--although the owner might cover them in the winter; I haven't noticed for certain. A couple of my plants now usually have at least three large blossoms each spring. They are easily ruined by rain and don't last that long, but they are spectacularly beautiful, and I therefore am glad I have them; I look forward to them each spring.

Just thought I'd post the results I had in one garden bed that's clay-loam. Last year I had amended this bed with home-made compost. Everything did well last year as first year plantings. This year they suffered from too little light. (I just put the roses there to get them through the winter and hoping they might like the eastern exposure. Heathcliff, Sugar Moon and Falstaff like sun in my neck of the woods, it seems. I'll probably be moving the viking Queen next Spring as she's a fraction of the size of her sister in full sun, and hasn't bloomed since Spring while her sister would be non-stop if not for the midge.) Anyway, the soil was very dry even with rain. I thought the heavy leaf layer prevented water. I stuffed the empty holes with alfalfa hay, compost and leaf mold until I decided what to plant. I also put the alfalfa under the leaves in the rest of the bed and gave it additional compost. Wow, when I went to plant Lavender Lassie and two hydrangeas, all the soil was so soft and fluffy and moist, even though we had less rain that earlier. I'm now prepping my holes in advance of next Spring and filling them with the same and covering the entire bed with alfalfa hay, etc. The new plantings have taken off even in the reduced light of late summer. I repeated this in another new bed and Mme Alfred Carriere and Awakening seem to love it even in their NE exposure. (Of course, they could just be responding to being in the ground vs. in pots. : ) ) Lesson learned. : ) I'm also trying gypsum on some new beds I'm prepping since they're on an incline. I'll report back.

Natasha, haven't yet used the Tumax to create a trellis. Ran across these 20 years ago, found the idea intriguing & picked up a kit for a few dollars. Would think the structural strength would relate to the diameter gauge of the wire selected & the number of anchors used as support. Expect one of the multi-strand twisted or braided cable wires - in place of the galvanized wire roll that comes with the kit - would be much stronger & bear the weight of a mature rose. Since the wire is threaded through the loops that project from the anchors, would think how closely those anchors are spaced also figures into a weight capacity calculation. The tensile strength of the wire plus the number of anchors used along the line should yield a rule of thumb where the weight is distributed evenly along the span. Tumax may have this info with their professional kit instructions on their site - you might noodle around there to find it - or just contact them & ask for their load weight formula. Have used the anchors alone, without wires, as free form supports on a stone facade. Install them on the wall where they're needed as the rose grows & loosely figure eight tie the canes to the anchor eyelet. The anchors are hidden behind the plant. Gives a pleasant natural effect to my eye, as if the rose is doing it all by itself. (Look Ma, no hands!) To allow sufficient space between the wall & the plant, often add another ring or length of rubbery plastic chain onto the eyelet & tie to that as the canes thicken, allowing me to use those spongy noodle ties or green velcro loops. Lenarufus, Nahema is a beauty with toe-curling fragrance. Your wall coloring sets her off to perfection. New here this year as a gallon own root, she's a real charmer. Good growing to all! Sue

Diane! I've missed you! There's no way I'm going to attempt moving my big Chianti after my experience in attempting to move a mature William Baffin!I 'm planning on digging up my younger, second one I got last spring to move to my new home. I'll still have access to my old garden since it's at my father's. Pruning Chianti? Well, I can't say I have any specific method or advice, but since I want mine to be a BIG shrub, I cut back enough so that the canes will support the foliage and blooms of spring. I trim back excessively long shoots before winter most of the time, but I haven't quite done so this year yet... I'm nearly convinced it could cover this old shed in several more years, but I'd prefer it to be renovated. Steven

I have pretty colors, but it lacks class.
That really pinches a nerve in my ego.

It is like comparing a coloring book to Monet's art!

LOL!! Annie, I was looking at your pictures (for like the 4th time) again thinking "OMG!! This garden is gorgeous!!" Then I read further down the replies and saw yours comparing your gardens to mine and others.

Don't be silly!! Your garden is absolutely beautiful. When I saw the picture of your patio area I thought I'd sit there all day if I were you and not get anything done because I'd just be staring at the beauty all around. The color you have in your garden is amazing.

I think it's great that everyone on this forum has quite different gardens and they are all very special. I love seeing what everyone is doing in their garden and what beauty they are creating. Sometimes I think my garden is too "stiff", but yours is so wonderful and carefree and I am going to use tips from your photos to relax mine in certain areas.

I can't even believe you have so many reblooming iris. I remember hearing about them on the cottage forum but figured there weren't all that many. Holy cow! Your iris are beautiful. Do you know the names of any of them?

Just how many roses do you have?!?!? Do they require a lot of maintenance or do you plant less "fussy" roses? I'd love to know which ones you think pretty much do their own thing and don't require a lot of work. I need more iris and roses in my garden!!

Here are two of my four frilly pink & white Peonies...bent down from all the rain. If you can help me name them, I would appreciate it. In front is a deep pink peony. It didn't bloom this year, but the other ones just like it did. Go figure.

I love your garden Annie. It's so cheery, and there is so much to see, so much variety. I love the idea of planting a hardy hibiscus and peony near each other. I'd have never thought of that but it makes perfect sense bloom time wise :)

Annie, your garden is gorgeous. How much land do you have there? It looks huge. Can we see a photo of your garden structure in the second photo? I have caught glimpses of it twice, and it is so intriguing.

And in your fourteenth photo down, you have some deep red irises then a really beautiful red/pink luminata iris in front. Do you know the name of that iris?

Peonies. And Allium. Sigh. My mom and I were just talking about how there's one flower we both lust after and can't grow here- peonies.

I think that when we see pictures like these of someones elses garden we see the beauty and all the hard work that went into it. Often when looking at our own gardens we see the flaws. Or even the immagened flaws. So we might see it as less than it is. I hope that makes sence.
