Never had a dough throwing moment and it's not really related to Christmas but I was making an apple pie one morning. If I was interrupted once I was interrupted a dozen times, the phone, the door, the dog wanting out etc. etc. etc. Finally with the phone ringing in the background I stood my ground popped the top pastry on, a sprinkle of sugar and in the oven it finally went. As I stood there, phone ringing again I said OH CRAP!!! actually it was something much worse. I remembered I had sprinkled the cinnamon on the apples but no sugar. I took the pie out of the oven spent the next 15 minutes gingerly removing the top (I had put a lovely fluted edge around it) added the sugar and very carefully put the top back on and popped it back in the oven. The amazing thing was it turned out pretty darn good fluted edge and all. a

My story is somewhat similar . . . and if I've told this before, just think of it as a tradition . . .

My Great "Ant" Nona was a wonderful cook and was known for her marathon cooking sessions of baked goods and such. My mother was a teenager visiting for the holidays and was drummed into service in the kitchen as a dishwasher. Mumsie was feeling quite good about the progress she was making with the pots and pans but somehow no matter how hard or fast she worked, she never could FINISH.
It turned out that whenever dirty dishes interfered with Ant Nona's cooking progress, she would hide them under the sink or under the bed or in the closets. So when Mum came over that day, Ant Nona added a few dirty dishes here and there as needed. I'm sure Mum considered throwing them into the woods as well!

Cute story..I wonder what wildlife gobbled that up..or got a tummy ache from the dough as our mothers use to say when we at to much raw dough. I can see it now, a big buck, writhing on the ground with a belly ache from too much pie dough found deep in the wooods :) Cute thread..can't wait to hear everyones stories!!

Both new bride stories....

As a new bride, showing off her skills or so I thought. I was going to make a pumpkin pie..just like my mom made, from scratch. Being a bit to proud to ask my mom how too..I dug in myself...no canned pumpkin for me..so sir eee.... :) I bought a pumpkin, cut and peeled it as I had seen my mom do many times, added water and boiled it....then having no recipe, I decided to use the one off the CANNED pumpkin.(no internet then) So I went to the store, and bought a can of pumpkin just for the recipe. I returned home and began the process. My pumpkin seemed a bit chunky yet, so I added MORE water and boiled some more...until it looked like tomato soup....nice and soupy..but smooth as silk. Then I used the canned recipe..measuring very very careful..not to mess up after all this work (which now had taken most of a day), Baked my pie according to directions time and temp ect. When we got ready to eat it, my new husband cut it, then got up from the table, went to a kitchen drawer and came back with two straws. He said very calmly and very seriously, I think we better use these to eat it with. :) My pie was like thicker tomato soup but runny as all get out. It never occured to me, that the canned recipe was meant for that nice thick gelled pumpkin..not for watered down, tomato soup consistancy pumpkin :)

My other story was a fudge adventure...also a new bride. Made fudge again from Scratch, just like mom made.. :) But apparently I boiled it too long, got it to hot, and used a cheapy white rubber spatula to spread it into the pan. I did not notice the white streaks thru it. My hubby went to cut it and said..hmmm..did you put marshmellow in the fudge or something? It was melted rubber spatula :) I guess I got it a bit hot :) Oh how we learn :)

We're diverging from the Christmas theme, OK? Keesha's fudge reminds me of a now nameless boyfriend who, wooing me, fired up the BBQ after work on a dark winter night. Plunked those pricey steaks on the grill, neglecting to remove the absorbent plastic/towel thingy. We ended up having scrambled eggs and stayed together for another 7 years.

Patti: Tsk. Did Mumsie never teach you that a well-designed kitchen must have at least 2 ovens? One to stash the un-washed dishes in until niece visits. Then she doesn't have to look for skeletons in the closet.

I've thrown lots of dough in my time. And no, I don't mean mis-spent money, though that's happened, too. Many attempts to re-create the tangy San Francisco sourdough I love so well; it just doesn't happen without the right spores in the air. Pink science experiments (nobody else has ever found one of those in their fridge, right?) go into compost where skunks help me turn the pile.

Gingerbread, Christmas: one year I undertook to create a replica of renovated mill building where my store was. Had 10 slabs of walls and roofs baked, awaiting assembly. Woulda been great with a huge stack of Life-Savers for the signature smoke stack. Except got too busy to finish, forgot about it. A month later, seems I'd been Mice Santa. They particularly liked the window openings.

Echoing: oh, how we learn. Especially not to bite off more than we can chew.

Again not a Christmas story....but....

It was one of those nights where we were being kind of finicky and couldn't decide what to make for dinner. So finally we came up with the idea quiche would be good...since we had dilly dallied for way to long...both DH and I decided to make this together.....

We got the crust made and in the pan. Then started adding the filling....this all went surpisingly quick. We tossed it in the oven and when the beeper went off an hour later couldn't wait to eat. It was getting late after all. We pulled it out of the oven.....and it looked like soupy milk. Hot milk with ham and cheese. LOL! We examined it....and started laughing.....neither one of us put the eggs in. Eggless quiche?. We ended up going out to eat that night. LOL!

It's been a tradition at our house that our best friends come over every year and we all make cookies. We get pretty creative. Last year just before Christmas, a co-worker gave me a very fine bottle of bourbon. It was also 141.2 proof. Well, one nog led to another and the resulting cookies got a little out of hand.

The only family cooking story I can remember this late is one my parents have told me over and over. Shortly after they married, mom made rolls that were inedible. Dad sprayed one gold and used it as a doorstop until mom threw it away in disgust.

Suggestion for future threads - please insert a warning in the title that hilarious material follows. I mean, a gal is trying to read a couple of threads at work in between nasty projects, and then she gets reading material that is innapropriate to maintain an office composure. I mean, my co-workers do not have much of a sense of humour and do not have the highest regard for people laughing their hearts out in front of their computers. I mean, our projects are not *that* hysterical, are they?

Dough as doorstop, gingerbread mean from hell... OMG, you're the best!

You guys are all too funny. My Mom was making a huge amount of potato salad to take to a picnic. This was in the 50's. She went to put salt on the cooked potatoes and the top came off. She had the great idea of washing all the cooked potatoes and starting over. It worked and everyone said it was her best ever.

I made a pie for Mom and Dad one time at their house. I was so proud of the crust and apple filiing. I brought the pie to the table and cut it. I used the pie server to scoop up a piece. As I lifted it out of the dish Daddy stuck his hand out under the server ....he was trying to catch crumbs...I wasn't thinking and just placed the piece in his hand. Everyone started laughing so hard. That story got retold everytime I made and served a pie.

Trailrunner, you just used a built in pie server...sames money, offers good laughs, and dishwasher safe : )

As a young bride I decided to try to make gazpacho as one of the courses for a small family dinner party we were having. I thought a clove of garlic was the whole bulb. You can probably guess the rest. LOL

The worst part was watching our family choking down the soup and pretending it was good so as not to hurt my feelings. As soon as I took the first sip, I stood up and removed every bowl. ACK!

The second story came from a friend, also a young bride at the time, who was cooking dinner for her new in-laws. The recipe called for chopped green peppers. She kept slicing bell peppers and then tossing them into the garbage. Her MIL came over and asked what was wrong. My friend said, "There's something wrong with these peppers. I keep slicing them and there's nothing inside, just some seeds. I think they are rotten.". :-) Somehow her MIL kept a straight face through this conversation. LOL

Only one I can think of happen at Thanksgiving not Christmas but it is a cooking boo boo story. Guess I was 16 and I wanted to try and make pumpkin pies so my mom said sure here's the recipe. I made two pies and they turned out great. Well, at least they looked great. The next day (Thanksgiving) I noticed there was a lot of moisture on the top of the pies...I mean puddles of moisture. My mom touched the puddle with her finger and then tasked it. She looked at me and asked..."how much salt did you put in these pies"? Oops...instead of the cup of sugar the recipe called for I had put a cup of SALT in each pie filling!!! Needless to say we didn't have pumpkin pie that Thanksgiving.

Before my first husband and I married I baked him some muffins. He was very nice and said he would save the rest for later. Come to find out they were like saw dust and elmer's glue. After we married he told me about them. I asked what he had done with them. He said, "they are still under the seat of my truck.". Soo months later I sneaked one out and wrapped it as a Christmas gift.

After that for the next 5 years I did that to him. One year, right after Christmas, he was showing it to some friends and the girl broke it open. We looked at each other and almost cried. Thereby ended the muffin gag.
