Which type of lemon tree?
Comments (2)If your Dad lives in zone 7, it will never survive the winter short of your building a heated greenhouse over it, unfortunately. I think lemons are rated maybe zone 8B or 9a? Yes, most all citrus from seed is very thorny. That's normal. What kind of seed did he plant? Most lemons do come true-to-type. Keep in mind these plants need to get very large before they can bear fruit -- maybe 10-14 feet tall or more before the growth gets out of its juvenile form and can begin to bloom. They do make an interesting potted plant though. Yours looks like it needs a bigger pot so the roots can stretch a bit. Make sure it does not sit in water after watering or sit in full sun. These plants really like perfect drainage. Full sun can cook the roots in the pot. Good luck! Comments (9)The problem with growing lemons from seed is that they take a really long time to fruit. Generally I say the fruiting time for a citrus is proportional to its size. Lemon tree seedlings other than Meyer get very tall. Don't trim them because they have to outgrow the juvenile wood to produce. I had one about ten years old that did not produce and the freeze finially killed it last year. They sell Eureka and Lisbon lemons in California with the same product code and they taste the same to me. The Lisbon lemons are said to be grown in desert conditions while the Eurekas like cool Pacific coast weather. A lady once brought a Lisbon lemon to a fruit tasting in Houston. She grew it from seed she got in the market. It was much larger than most super market lemons. Some of you interior California citrus growers chime in here and help us out. Are the large lemons likely to be Lisbons? Also there used to be a lemon grown near Orlando by Coca Cola for their Sprite but that may like more humidity. I'll bet there is one from the Egypt-Isreal-Jordan region that will grow on its own roots that tastes good. But be sure you have similar soil and water types (acid/alkaline) and don't forget salt content. Growing a seedling is a huge investment in valuable space and years of labor so do your research well. Whether or not a citrus comes true is not dependant on hybridization. Sunquats are Meyer lemon x kumquat hybrids and almost all come true. Fairchild is a tangerine x tangelo hybrid that mostly comes true from seed....See MoreWhich National Retailer has best 'No Lemon Policy'?
Comments (7)NOpe, Depot and Lowes (and us and anyone else) only act as a transaction agent for you to buy the warranty from a third party--the same as the retailer does for you and the manufacturer. GE was the provider for many in the field last time I checked. THey were ours, but we've just changed providers and I can't recall what idiotic "protection service" sounding moniker we're using now. Retailers don't do anything but collect their 20% and route your call off to the third party if you have an issue. THe only thing offered by most extended warranties that does apply during the manufacturer warranty is coverage for spoiled food (refrigerator) and for damage from power surges. Everything else during that first year is covered (or not) by the manufacturer, and it's at their discretion as to whether or not to replace an item rather than repair it. Your "bonus coverage" is nothing more than smoke and mirrors from the warranty company. Neither the manufacturer nor the warranty company will be at all ameniable to replacing a "lemon" appliance unless you hound them unmercifully. It's still better to buy a decent brand and save your money on any after market warranty. If you're concerned about the ice maker in a fridge, pay the money to buy one without it and get a separate ice machine. Except that you'll be spending enough money to buy 2 "standard" refrigerators all over again. There IS no such thing as a brand with zero repairs. You'll read something bad about every single brand out there. The few complainers are much much louder than the thousands of everyday people not on the internet specifically to vent. If you want a recommendation for fewest repair issues, call a local appliance service company and ask them about which brand they get calls for the least. OF all the brands we sell, the Maytag/Jennair/Whirlpool conglomerate has more requests for the manufacturer's phone number to log a service issue than does the others. And, they have some of the worst service agents as well. Even so, we might get 1% of the WHirltag refrigerators we sell needing a service call that first year. Most do exactly as they were designed to do. You just don't hear about those....See MoreCan you tell which kind of lemon tree is this??
Comments (5)It could be Eureka or Lisbon. I've noticed that my lemon flowers and growth only get that purple tinge when grown in an environment with significant UV light (outside); indoors, they are almost always white. Just (tart) food for thought. -Tom...See Moregcmastiffs
