I agree with everything gardengal said, but would add that I wouldn't really say B&B is a "marginal" root system. In some cases, it had been greatly reduced. "Partial" root system seems more accurate for that, while bare rooting can still have most of the roots, they've just been stressed by washing. That sounds more like 'marginal' to me. Also given that the issues with container stock are even more serious than I once believed (knotted roots deep within container root mass) I would almost have to cynically point out that correctly planting a containerized plant briefly turns it into a bareroot plant! I bought a couple Abies firma a few years ago and I knew they had been severely pot bound. I got a good price on them because of it. When I planted them, I very aggressively untangled and cut the roots. There was hardly any soil left. But I was able to spread a few of them out over about 3-5 feet from the trunk. Yes, this involved a lot of digging...and backfilling with only what was dug. So in essense this containerized plant became a bare root plant when planted. Well, they established incredibly quickly and sailed through the hot summers of 2011 and 2012 w/o needing any watering after the first year. One of them has grown almost 3' just this year. I actually think doing that: not only having all of the plant's pre-sale roots, but also "recreating" a prototype root spread as though the plant had always been there, is probably the absolute best way. It's just the horticultural industry can't say that because they know most people won't take the time. It makes it seem like you are having to do with the work instead of them: 95% of people just want to pop the blob in hole and get back to whatever "reality" show they were watching. The juniper would not necessarily grow faster than the 'Smaragd'. And in my climate at least the juniper often looks less dense, with partly discolored older foliage visible. The rate of growth is a function of the site conditions, if 'Smaragd' always grew at a snail's pace it would not be a very common and cheap item. It appears to grow at about the same rate as the less green and dense 'Fastigiata' that it has to a large extent replaced on the market in my area. So, in time you end up with a small tree instead of a large one such as is produced by 'Green Giant'.

Gosh, Google does not have a lot on Camellia Hedges! I went to Camellia Forest in Chapel Hill the other day and was in awe of the beautiful camellia's they keep! As far as hedges go, I'm also looking for a hedge...they suggested High Fragrance or Early Autumn - for the "look I was going for" (ie. dense). I walked out with their personal fav - Autumn Spirit. I'm probably going to do Early Autumn just so I can catch those blooms before the frost hits (hopefully) in one area and High Fragrance in another. As a side note, I did plan a hedge of C.S. Sergeant and it's looking fabulous - after just 2 months! I've not seen it bloom, yet, but the habit (as I'm learning to call it) is very dense with beautiful deep green leaves - which I love! My small area of Kramer's Supreme is coming along, too. It's habit seems to be much more "upright" in comparison to Sergant which has both upright and outward growth occurring (which I like). I also have a hedge of Alabama Beauties I'm going to plant. Cam Forest liked it's habit; however, it has seed pods, which I'm not sure I'm a huge fan of ;) buuuut it likes sun and they suggested it, so I went with it. :) I'm pondering using Kanjiro, instead, but I really appreciated his input. In early spring, I planted 3 Holly's to mask my neighbor's garage and, thus far, the bunnies have delighted in the bottom halves. So, I'll probably replace those with Camellia's too...next year ;) In the meantime, I'll grab pics of the progress I'm making. :)
