New Year's Resolution

Hello everyone,

Well, it looks as though my resolution to reduce the number of purchased conifers for 2007 has started to fall apart. My "conifer must have" list that I prepared and was going to faithfully stick to has suddenly become irrelevant. I made it to 04/13/07(opening day for retail sales at Arrowhead Alpines). Pics of 3 of the items purchased( at least they were small).

Thuja orientalis 'Van Hoey Smith sport'. I believe this should get full sun exposure, does anyone know for sure?

Cedrus deodora 'Devinely Blue'. I've placed it in a specially prepared and protected spot(I am in zone 5, MI). My Cedrus deodora 'pygmy' looks good after this winter, but is so small that it had snow cover for most of it. Both cedars are on their own roots.

The new growth on my Cedrus d.'Devinely Blue' froze slightly when temps dropped to 16F. last week. Old growth survived in good condition.

Oh,by the way,I never make myself promises I can never keep. You always run into that conifer you can't do with out.

That Split Rock is something. Like that Platycladus too.

So sorry for your loss zach. My resolution is to get every potted rose in the ground so I don't have to do the pot polka, in the garage/basement when it gets cold, back out again when it isn't. With temps going down to the teens tonight, I still have some pots to bring it. I have all the ones upstairs in the garage and I tried to get all the ones in the backyard in the basement last night, but the light has apparently burned out so I will have to go out there this AM to see what is left (and change the light bulb).

Lucille I made this resolution a few years back and this is the time of year to reflect how well I am keeping it. I resolved to try to live in the present and appreciate my family, my home, my house and my pets and never, ever say any hurtful thing to them again. The year I was faced with devastating loss I wanted to go back in time and enjoy my lost loved ones. So far the worst thing I have done (yesterday) was complain when my husband was careless and broke a light fixture. I apologized two minutes later and felt bad about it. I am also serious about finishing my last degree this year. I have 5 classes to go (on line) and it kind of conflicts with the resolution I made about enjoying living in the present because it takes so much of my time. But I make sure I don't get all po'd when things don't go my way and just try to lower my clean freak standards a bit.

Bostedo, thank you for describing the plastic pots that melted in the sun. I read online that polystyrene (#6) is what Styrofoam packing material is made of. My black nursery pots are marked with a 5 within the recycling symbol. My decorative plastic pots are not marked. Some of my old favorites have cracked. As for New Year resolutions we are all at different points on our garden path and I find all your goals interesting at whatever point you are on yours and would like to hear about them. As for me, due to my age and especially after experiencing the many weeks of disability due to the fractured femur this spring, I'm definitely in the 'tried and true' camp, but am enjoying this 'camping trip' as much as I have anything in the past. I'm seeing the design wisdom of repeating some of the tried and true plants around the garden as well as concentrating on ornamental trees and shrubs and using only a few favorite perennials such as phlox and a couple of cannas, and easy care annuals like gomphrena and begonias. This may be the last year for anything that needs to be taken into the greenhouse. We shall see how that goes. My current project, other than pulling weeds, is spray painting all my garden tools florescent pink so I can find them with just a glance and don't have to tromp all over the yard looking for something. Speaking of weeds, what has been even more problematic this year than the usual winter weeds are good plants coming up everywhere! This includes larkspurs, Mexican feather grass, white wine cups, even Crawford lettuce. With so many to pull my dilemma is whether to thin them or try to eliminate them entirely. Whatcha' think? Happy gardening in 2019! Again, we'd like to hear about your goals, and the new plants you intend to try. Or if you're keeping with the 'tried and true' which of those you are keeping.

i resolved to quit drinking ...

BUT I SURE AS HECK DIDNT RESOLVE TO QUIT BUYING CONIFERS ... man .. what are you thinking .... rotf .....

my van hoey gets one hour of sun at mid day ... shaded to the east by deciduous trees.. and the west by strobus .... grows like a weed every summer ... and burn like the devil every winter .... i do NOT recommend full winter sun .. nor full summer sun ...

Redwing, my new years resolution was to label my conifers better, productive, and yet much less limiting. Very cool plants, thanks for posting. Similarly, my 30" 'Karl Fuchs' made it through a tough winter with several weeks of -15 degree F of lower weather, healed in the ground in a hypertufa pot, which I thought was pretty impressive.

Yeah, that cold spell was a bit alarming. The most frustrating part of it though was the 2 weeks of unseasonably warm(hot) weather prior to it that prompted most of my conifers to start their new growth cycle. If we had just gotten average temps and then that cold period then I doubt anyone would have thought much about it.

I've been meaning to contact you about your email regarding photos of conifers. You are more than welcome to have any that you would like- just email me about what you would like, how to send , etc.

I may be delusional, but I don't think that I'm to the point of resolving to never buy conifers again. I was just going to try and make a list of whatever number and try to stay focused only acquiring those particular ones. Feel up to the pony rides this year at Gee's?

I also have been looking at purchasing a label system as I have 4 plants that look so similar that I sunk the little plastic nursery label in the ground behind them out of fear that I may lose track of what they are just relying on my memory. Sinking the hypertufa trough was a good solution too. I've yet to use hypertufa, but I am looking forward to trying to make some this year.

Would the Thuja orientalis 'Van Hoey Smith sport' grow in zone 9, the Mississippi coast?

Beautiful plants.
