Growing Red Spruce in the Midwest

For 2 years now, I have been trying to grow Red Spruce (Picea rubens) as a landscape tree. I bought 10 four-year seedlings from the New Hampshire State Forest Nursery in 2010 (I'm buying more this spring), and 7 have survived. After two of the hottest and driest summers on record, what's left of the spruces looks fine. One that I have on the east side of the house near the back door has done exceptionally well (After watering and fertilizing it), and the buds are beginning to break. I first saw Red Spruce in the Smoky Mountains, where it covers the higher mountaintops. I prefer the look of red spruce over Norway spruce, the closest look-alike, because it looks prettier, smells better, and has softer needles. Norway spruce is probably a better bet around here (There are tons of them on our property), but I like to try growing more uncommon things. Any one ever try growing Red Spruce?
