sequoia sempervirens sprouting in the wild...

Went to an old growth redwood preserve, albeit a small one, forty miles north of here two days ago. I was surprised to see a very LARGE number of little seedlings sprouting up, some with their little seedcases on them still. I didn't know that they regenerated this easily in the wild. Very inspiring. IT's a shame that so many of these little guys will die, though, as it's too easy for them to get trampled, and most people who visit this place will have no idea that this little thing with two cotyledons is an infant giant. here's two pictures.
