How do I keep my liverworts alive?

I bought a perennial with liverworts growing on the top (I bought the perennial for the liverworts.). Now I know many consider these a pest, but how do I keep them alive or thriving? Mine always die. Any suggestions on light, water, or fertilizer? Thanks!

First thing you need to look at is your water. Liverworts are very susceptible to the types of salts in water. So it is best to use distilled or r/o water only.
Secondly, check out my recent thread on growing Marchantia.
You need to take the liverwort off of the old soil that is in the pot you purchased. Then get some sand, creek or river only and mix with some peat moss. And probably divide the clump up into 2 pots. Make a depression in the sand mix and press in the liverwort. Water and bag into a one gallon sized bag and put in a spot that gets a couple of hours of direct sun on a northern exposure. Give it time.

Can you put them in the shade? Do you know any of your neighbors? Watering 4 plants isn't a lot to ask, especially if they have a view of your pretty flowers too. You could also use a plastic bottle with a pin hole, so water drips out slowly. As the sun hits it, the air/water inside will heat up, forcing it to expand and drip out.

Birdtalker; Don't bring them inside. They'll be much easier to care for over the winter if you let them go dormant. Bringing them inside where its warm is an invitation for spider mites to suck them dry. I don't know how cold zone 7 gets; they may be just fine in large pots on your deck, but if you want to be safe you should consider moving them to an unheated garage in their pot. You could also dig a big hole, and bury the pot in the ground over the winter. Either way, just make sure they get a little water, and they should be fine! Good luck! Lara

Don't be afraid to take it out anytime wather permits. If you get a minni heat wave and it's going to be in the 70s with overnight lows in the low 50s leave it out. Bring back in if it cools again. Carl pool fertilizer will work (do a google search for a source) In the winter keep it in the high 60s if possible (overcast days, of course it will get warmer when sunny). For humidity mist it every day. Also when indoors (late sep-late may) anytime you have a 60 degree day take it outside, especially if raining. Natural wind and rain are a tonic for them during their 8 month stay indoors.
