Miniature Roses

How do I keep these seedlings alive????

I am not a mini rose grower, every one I have planted has died except for this one which was my first. No name or type known. I planted it a barrel many years ago and it has done just fine except for aphids. I planted a mint in the barrel with it and haven't seen an aphid since. Last fall I pruned it back and threw the trimmings in the compost. This spring my husband found two small rose plants in the compost and potted them up for me. They have been growing in a 2 in pot since on my deck. Question is, should I bring them inside for the winter or leave them on the deck. I would pot them in a larger pot before that I think, but I do not want to lose these little plants. How should I treat them over the winter?? I really, really, really want to keep these plants alive.

I keep my container roses outside all year around but I am not in your zone so I will not give advise but you may want to repost your questions in the regular rose forum as there are many people that live in your state and zone that can give you the proper advise.

Don't bring them inside. They'll be much easier to care for over the winter if you let them go dormant. Bringing them inside where its warm is an invitation for spider mites to suck them dry.
I don't know how cold zone 7 gets; they may be just fine in large pots on your deck, but if you want to be safe you should consider moving them to an unheated garage in their pot. You could also dig a big hole, and bury the pot in the ground over the winter.
Either way, just make sure they get a little water, and they should be fine!

I would recommend planting them in pots and burying the pots in your garden bed since it's in a sheltered spot. You should be able to just cover them with straw just like the other plants. I wouldn't cut the foliage back unless it looks like it could possibly have diseases.

First thing you need to look at is your water. Liverworts are very susceptible to the types of salts in water. So it is best to use distilled or r/o water only. Secondly, check out my recent thread on growing Marchantia. You need to take the liverwort off of the old soil that is in the pot you purchased. Then get some sand, creek or river only and mix with some peat moss. And probably divide the clump up into 2 pots. Make a depression in the sand mix and press in the liverwort. Water and bag into a one gallon sized bag and put in a spot that gets a couple of hours of direct sun on a northern exposure. Give it time.

That's an interesting way to start seeds. Sounds like it worked very well. I've been starting some Pseudolithos seeds over the past month or two. I start them in a gritty, inorganic mix of Turface, Floor Dry, and granite. A lot of people think seedlings need a fine soil to support their tiny root systems, but I've found they do just fine in a gritty mix. Plus, starting them in a gritty mix means they can be left in place longer without the setback of repotting. I use a heat mat, and cover them with a plastic container for a couple weeks, making sure they stay continually damp. Once they're up and growing, the plastic cover comes off, I allow them to briefly dry out between waterings, I start fertilizing, and I add some intense led lighting to prevent any etiolation.
