Cold Weather Pansies - getting ready for winter (pic heavy)

When it comes to cold weather... I'm as big of a wuss as my succulent babies. When the temp hits 40 degrees in TX (even if only for a few months) I want to hibernate!

Getting ready for first frost... making room, merging plants, seperating offsets, neem-ing, trimming, photographing! :)

My $1.25 clearance bin Voodoo looks much better I think! Still a long way to go.

-We've been downsizing our critter population - when we can find a dry day, which is perhaps twice a week. I have never seen such a gloomy, cloudy, rainy, muddy, yucky October. The last half of September wasn't much better. But instead of taking this as a sign of a long cold winter ahead, I prefer to think that November and December are going to be nicer than average - to make up for all this rain. LOL. An optimist, or at least I try hard to be one... We culled our remaining eight Speckled Sussex hens and made soup. Brian finished building the "Chiclet Box" as I like to call our new little chicken house and the Chiclets (Dominiques, just short of six months old) are installed there. They are laying really well, but we've had some unscheduled downsizing by our mystery predator. I started with a dozen day olds, 10 pullets and 2 cockerels. We lost one of the cockerels at about three weeks. And now two of our pullets have disappeared. All our losses to predators this year - several old hens, two young geese and these two pullets - have been of the "without a trace" variety. There are fishers about, coyotes and big hawks... so I don't know which is to blame. Our geese are doing well, the youngsters as big as their mamas now. I have a trio of Pilgrims, a Buff and five mutts, offspring of our horried gander. I managed to find a buyer for the five and he will collect them in about a month. I got $60 for them, not as much as I'd hoped, but I really was not looking forward to culling them myself. So we will only have the four to take through the winter and I hope they will raise lots of little Pilgrims next year. (The Buff will be a foster mom; when she goes broody I'll give her Pilgrim eggs. The rabbits are doing great. We put seven in the freezer last week and today we processed three of the adults, just keeping the best three breeders through the winter. (And our two indoor Angoras that popped up unexpectedly in one of the summer litters.) We have another five youngsters to do and nine more month-old babies running around in a large pen in the rabbit house (former chicken house). Very cute right now and thank goodness by the time they are big enough to eat (just before Christmas) they lose a lot of their baby bunny appeal. We've been really cutting back our spending on just about everything non-essential, but whatever we go short on this winter, it won't likely be meat or eggs. Not much left in the garden now, just some leeks and the perennial Egyptian onions. We didn't get much planted this spring due to opening the antiques shop (which is limping along, but is fortunately supplemented by sales on Ebay.) Well, that about sums it up here. Hope everyone is having a good autumn and that winter stays away for awhile yet.

tshallow ...my friend just used outdoor acrylic paints & it's been out there for some time...it's faded some & it's in the shade alot ...but still looks great! Neet-Oh. I wonder if it works for bubble gum, too? I've never tried this one, but there should be an effect. Blow up a ballon inside the house, then take it out into the frigid weather. It should skrink. Bring it back in and it should return to normal size as it warms. They were doing this one the weather deck at our local TV station: Toss a glass of water (just the water - not the glass) up in the air and it instantly freezes into snow flakes. To dramatize the coldness, they used a glass of hot water.

I've been working towards Fall for weeks now. It's too big a job to put it all off to the last minute. Tomato plants have been coming out as they deteriorate. They go to the landfill. Pepper plants this year didn't produce...too wet?...so they've been pulled too except for the one huge Asian pepper plant. Watermelon vines (essentially dead now) need to find their way to the trash. Isn't it true that they shouldn't be composted? I'm still picking green beans (2nd planting) and I've been getting potatoes from my Fall crop for several weeks. In the middle of my vegetable garden I have about 35 amaryllis bulbs. I have started the process of digging them for winter storage. Quite a process for me partially because I keep a label with each individual bulb to document bloom history and color. They get dug, dried in the shed for a few weeks, and then cut off the (drying) leaves and pack for storage in the basement. Each time I move the bulb, the label has to move with it. Once the beans give up or we get a frost (whichever comes first) I'll dig the potatoes, pull the beans, and whatever else is still in the garden and break out the rototiller. For the first time ever, I think I'll plant a cover crop. Bought some annual rye grass seed for this purpose. Anything to watch out for when doing this?

They all look great, and thanks to your post I have confirmed that one new plant of mine is an Aeonium:D

Also your Gollums are looking great!

Thank you Pat and CouchPotato89! Seriously... what a dork I am! But maybe I'll have to go buy some yellow pansies for my bare patio, now. ;)

I'm loving my green centered Aeoniums waking up! And Voodoo and Gollum will always be special to me if they continue to thrive... and at such a steal of a price!

Hi PPG - Sara,

Nice collection, but a couple of quick points.

I believe that Hoya ID is incorrect (sorry), that's not Lacunosa, more likely it's DS-70/Tsangii (I grow both plants in question). Post the pic at Hoya forum if you'd like confirmation (Hoya forum is sort of next door, don't know if you know).

Lovely as those community pots of clearance bin succulents are (& they ARE lovely), if you paid any money for your Hoyas, I'd move them further apart. Those rosette succulents (which I love also) can all bring mealy w/ them from the clearance rack & mealy is HIGHLY contagious among Hoyas, especially your Hoya on the far left, the varieg. H. compacta (hindu rope).

Not sure why you call 'black' Aeonium 'Vodoo', but it's likely A. Schwartzkoff or Atropurpurem, I always confuse those 2. Looking quite nice those Aeoniums.

Hi pirate girl! I frequent the Hoya forum quite often. I purchased a lot of my Hoyas from EBay... But purchased two supposed EA lacunosas from big box retailers that look completely different from each other. I received an ID from the Hoya forum of my dark green as Ruby Sue and the lighter I was just guessing as Tove. You know how spotty their labeling can be. The Aeoniums that have the larger more sporadic looking leaves were labeled as "Voodoo" and listed two parent plants with Schwarzkopf being one of them. The other more bushy aeonium was purchased from an eBay seller in San Diego calling it Blushing Beauty... Not sure on that one.

I have tried to be very precautious with the Hindu Rope as well as all of the clearance bin babies. Most I have systemically sprayed with a Neem/Soap/Alcohol mix I found in the Hoya forum. Admittedly, it is a pain in the rear!!! And I'm sure the Echeveria will only be tolerant of sprays if they are few and far between. The Aeoniums don't seem to mind at all.

I realize it's a gamble, but they just won't make it outside in a N TX winter. I'm crossing my fingers!!! Anyhow, thank you for the advice and info.
