I'm sad to see summer go...

Hello everyone,

Here are the last of my flowers for this year. I had more hybrids bloom than any other year. I used Tiger Bloom on them this time around.

Still not having luck with small offsets so it's back to experimenting. I don't buy them off Ebay anymore. I think they are really spendy for something I'm probably going to kill.

We're going to So Cal soon and I'm heading to Mexican Hat Nursery. Anyone ever been? They have lovely pics of Echinopsis hybrids on their site; I'm hoping to get a few.

Echinopsis flowers are like waiting for Christmas; it takes forever to get here and most of the flowers only last a day

That is the MOST beautiful cactus blooms I ever saw in my life. Wow.....where is my jaw?
Thank you sharing. I am also very sad and scare of the coming winter. So many pots to carry inside.

I raised my children and am now helping raise my grands.This is not the end-you will have alot of gardening time for years,this is a new adventure of learning great things.Talk to him all summer so he will feel the excitement of going to school.I loved school myself and instilled that in my children-as well as the love of gardening.It has made me proud that they still call me for answers from recipes,plants diseases,to how to clean things.Life has been wonderful and I pray it will be also for you and your nanny boy.I keep my grands almost every week end and most of the summer-I insist..lol And I have a nanny boy too)they help plant,plan,ws.everything moonphase

Yeah, my neigbhors asked me how I was able to achieve that many plants. They saw me working on the garden around early March. They were curious about the garden beds I was making. They saw the milk jugs. I explained to them what it was and also gave them the Wintersown site. I actually watched their reactions when they saw it. They didn't pay much attention to it kinda like "oh, ok". However, when plants started to come out/bloom, they went back to me and asked, "was that from the tiny greenhouse". :) I'm going to make more beds maybe by fall once my knee gets better. :D Thanks mnwsgal! :)

Columbusguy, we found a warehouse locally that had the same thickness, but 3/4 inch narrower in stock. The difference is barely noticeable since the porch swing is hung right where the transition takes place. Since I am seriously cash-strapped, I wanted to stay in a budget. The original boards were 1 x 5 pine and were just beautiful, but would not be in my budget even if I could find replacements. The brown floor paint is SW Oil-Based Enamel (I love that stuff) and it is slightly bronzy-greenish. All of the photos look way more green than it really is. It is a color I mixed up at home and had matched. SW's browns are a bit disappointing and I am a little "over-particular" about brown, so when I need a brown paint I mix my own. (ok, really, i am totally OCD about color, but I love the brown of the porch floor) The blinds were $20 each at Lowes. They won't trim these for you (only the expensive interior blinds can be trimmed) so buy them longer than you need and cut them yourself. I simply unrolled them on the lawn, made my measurements (take a bit off both sides to ensure the pulleys at the top are still centered) and used tin snips to cut the plastic slats. I used an old hacksaw to cut through the heavy plastic header and footers. Hint: the footer slides, so slip it back and forth to give you more room to cut the slats, then slide it all the way over and just cut off one end to size, rather than both ends. Worthy, I did a good deal of research on painting the floor and found some pretty convincing arguments for painting only one side. The area below is unconditioned basement. It is not exposed to the elements. I'll let you know if I screwed up.

thankyou... I've had Katherine for the past two days and nights. she went home this afternoon but didn't want to at first..she was in an old toy..the kind that's yellow and red, with the cab over for kids... she managed to get it upright, while her daddy was checking out the trailer we're having moved out tomorrow morning..this toy has two broken wheels in the back but it didn't stop her..she was determined.. finally, her mom gave in and pushed her up and down the driveway..when they got in the car, she stayed in her little car and didn't want to leave it but her mom said.. "bye Katherine" and that's all it took. she bailed out of the car and ran to her own car seat...lol I'll be seeing them at 6am, for the trailer to be hauled down the freeway about 35 miles, to a barn. after they finish that, we're going to be at the kids' house for breakfast. the countdown is on... I know it in my head but I'm trying not to feel it in my heart yet. my youngest daughter is in San Luis Obispo for this next week. she called me just a bit ago, to let me know she's fine and arrived at around noon, to beautiful weather. she's been living with the kids and little girls for the past several months and she was telling me how she knows she's going to be a basket case when they go. she's in really strong transition now. she's turning 23, changing jobs, checking out California to be sure it's the school she wants to finish her architecture course in and coming home to having to both move out of the house and say bye to her sister, brother in law and both babies, that she's been around since the birth of both of them... I made her cry when I told her that Katherine had gone in her room looking for her and saying "Meena, where's Meena...she gone?" Savannah is too hard for Katherine to say, so it's shortened to Meena...cute huh? I could post a picture of Savannah..she just got her braces off on Wednesday afternoon of this week.... let's see if I can get this to post...... she's the caboose...youngest of my 6 kids.

Hello notolover, Nice looking blooms boy I don't think I've ever seen that combo of colors either.

The Mexican Hat Nursery, YES! I have been there I live around 5 Or so miles from there and get this I never heard about it until about 3 years ago. A friend of mine was talking about it as if I knew all about the place, I had to stop them and say, hey, hey where is this place ? I believe you need to call the guy and arrange an appointment to visit but its worth it.

The owner is very friendly & has tons of knowledge I think he said he taught at UCR about cactus. Yeah wow! Lots to see.

Nice colourful group shot - you've done well.

We're enjoying a latish bit of summer still - it's supposed to be at the 80s during the day and the 50s at night for about the next week.

It's been all I can do just to keep my plants alive this summer (I'll be glad when summers over :))

Thanks everyone for your appreciation of my flowers. I was very happy this year because I usually only have my 3 reliables bloom every year. This year I had at least a dozen bloom. There are some buds forming on others, but I think it's too late to see them get to full flowers.

I'm also going to miss my yellow desert rose bloom. Maybe I should take it with me. Do they travel well? :-)

We still are having lovely weather, but it's supposed to change next week. I'll have to bring in some of my tenders before I leave (jades, desert rose, mamms). I usually leave the Echinopsis, Notos and Trichos out to get a little chilled before I bring them in.

Greg, I'm glad you've been to Mexican Hat Nursery and can confirm it's worth going to. I emailed and they also wanted me to call as a reminder. I'm excited--my poor DH. We will only have the mini cooper full of trip stuff so I won't be able to go crazy. Did he plan it that way?

NICE colors.. I am really enjoying the coming of fall . It has come early. Normally we are still in the upper 90's and waiting for the first cold front. We have had three cool fronts and have had highs in the 80's and even 70's. What a relief after summer.

Looks like a Bouquet of flowers!

I never saw flowers like that on cactus like that! I'll admit, they do look better than the pasted on ones at Home Depot!:-)
