WSing with nanny boy for last time, I'm sad:(

My nanny boy will be going off to school in August. We did a lot of WS cups and as much as I was enjoying the process I knew it would be my last year to do this with him. One thing I can feel good about is that I have taught him to love nature by feeding the birds all winter and gardening all summer. He loves to eat the cherry tomatoes right off the plants and to help me select the Zinnias for our bouquets. Better stop, this is too sad.

I raised my children and am now helping raise my grands.This is not the end-you will have alot of gardening time for years,this is a new adventure of learning great things.Talk to him all summer so he will feel the excitement of going to school.I loved school myself and instilled that in my children-as well as the love of gardening.It has made me proud that they still call me for answers from recipes,plants diseases,to how to clean things.Life has been wonderful and I pray it will be also for you and your nanny boy.I keep my grands almost every week end and most of the summer-I insist..lol And I have a nanny boy too)they help plant,plan,ws.everything

Awwww, Tina - my friend - I know how much you love your nanny boy and isn't it wonderful how much he loves you... He will be forever grateful to you for teaching him about growing from seed, as I am to you!

I thought I'd give those of you interested an update on the life and times of Tony & Theresa. For about 10 days after I'd decided that the chicks had hatched, Tony & Theresa came together every day. Sometimes they spent quite a bit of time. Their food consumption never increased so I slowly came to realize that they had no babies at home after all. Then one morning Tony came alone. In the afternoon, Theresa came alone and so I knew that they were again setting on eggs. But, within just a few days, they were both back together - apparently they'd lost these eggs as well. Theresa again began to try to get Tony interested in a move back into her birdhouse here at home. Of course, that was the morning I had to pull the pile of garden stakes out from behind her house. So while she's trying to convince Tony that this is really a choice place to raise a family - I'm involved in a demolition project next door. I got the stakes in the pickup and skedaddled but not before upsetting Tony. I was told that he did come back and went into the birdhouse for a second look around but that was it for him. By the time I got back home, Theresa was still trying to lure him back but he wasn't coming closer than the power pole in the neighbor's yard. At the moment, Theresa has apparently given up again. Both birds are showing up a couple times each day and getting something to eat but the birdhouse (honestly, choice pigeon accommodations) is being ignored. I was driving down the main drag Saturday and passed a tavern that has been closed for a couple of years. (Who says these joints never go out of business?) The wood awning has lost quite a few shingles and a pigeon looking very much like Tony was hanging around on top. Now this saloon is a good 2 miles away but that's not far for them. The problem is that it looks to me like a horrible place for them to have a nest. If this is Tony's "Blue Heaven," they'll probably have continuing calamities. The real problem is that Tony is a young, inexperienced guy. Doves of all types have a cooperative arrangement between Mom and Dad for the care of the young and altho' Mom builds the nest; Dad gives her the construction materials and decides on the location. The other day, while Theresa was trying to get her new guy into her birdhouse, she would suddenly appear back at the door. Her behavior for all the world said, "Where is he! Where IS he!" and she'd shoot off into the sky only to have Tony join her within seconds flying off the power pole or some roof top. Theresa would slow and turn back to the birdhouse but Tony would drift off somewhere to wait for her. The good news is that Tony is becoming more and more comfortable with me. It is very slow going. Today, for the 1st time, he flew to the ground to get food and stayed down there long enuf to have his picture taken. Two weeks ago, he'd hide behind the chimney every time I came out of the house. So we may be getting there. I don't think that the taming of Tony will come any too soon for Theresa. She acts at times like a nervous wreck. DigitS'

Thanks everyone.We can send money to him and will now that we know his situation.We had no idea he was having this difficulty or we would have already been sending him money.He is the type that doesn't want to worry anyone.We didn't even know until a week ago what the living arrangements were.Up until a few weeks ago,(when he was suppose to get his orders and be deployed this month),they were putting him up in a Gov facility of some kind,but when they screwed up the orders this is where he had to go.I admire him for what he is doing but it scares me to death.I keep hoping the mess over there will calm down before he is deployed. I don't know how all this works but he said that he won't get back pay because he isn't "on orders".In order to get it he has to be and that got messed up.I don't know how they are suppose to live.He had a job here after he was to be deployed last August (and wasn't),but they told him not to take it because he could be deployed at any time.Even if he didn't get to work 2 days or 2 weeks or whatever,at least he would have had some money until he is deployed! I just don't get it.

I'm glad you're in a 4Runner, Susan, that's my vehicle of choice, too. However, as good and as heavy as they are, ice makes anything dangerous to drive. We are more prone to ice storms around here, but my 4Runner got us home in a blizzard a few years ago that was stranding everyone else. The snow came down so fast and heavy, it was being pushed out of the way by my own frame, and you know that's pretty high, so it was impressive. I kissed my car for weeks after that, I thought we would be walking home the last 10 miles, but nope- we drove! Took forever, but we made it. I'm glad you got home safe from the party. You might consider cables (those work great if there's snow or ice on the ground, you can order them thru an auto supply store, they aren't cheap but they last a good long time) for your tires- they will make your commute a lot safer. Woody has cables for his truck and he used them all the time when he was on the FD and responding to traffic accidents as an EMT. Swears by them! You have to take them off when the roads are clear and dry, but it only takes a few minutes.

I was about 12 years old, and was taking a test in school, when the principle came to the door and said there was an incident I was involved in, and needed to come to the office. I had no idea what he was talking about. The teacher said as soon as I finished the test, he would send me. My mind went blank and I couldn't concentrate. I am sure I failed the test. I went to the office and when I got there, a little neighbor girl of ours, age about 6, was there and her older brother. (Small school...all grades in one building). The story was that when I was walking to gym class the day before, and walked through the recess yard where younger children were playing, I picked up this little girl's dress and looked at her panties and called her a "debbil". I didn't even know what a debbil was...I thought it was a bad word that I didn't know the meaning of. Later, I figured out she meant that I had called her a "devil". I don't know why that little girl said that. The idea that I would lift up her skirt to see her panties was mind boggling. But, she had said that...and told her parents, who called the school and, hence, I was in the princple's office being questioned about it. I was crying and I couldn't remember even seeing her the day before. Supposedly other kids saw it, so they were called in, and no one saw it. (Of course, because it didn't happen.) After about an hour, the principle told her it wasn't nice to lie and she had to appologize to me. She said, "I'm sorry Marilyn. I told a lie." I was so distraught and sick, I went to the bathroom and cried my eyes out. But, worse than that incidence...in '95, my husband fired a deckhand. To make a long story short, to get back at him, the deckhand got his girlfriend to say that her children had been out to our place, here on the bayou....we didn't live here at the time, and my husband had molested them. They filed charges...filled out a report several pages long that said they were out here every weekend for 6 weeks, swimming nude in the bayou and riding horses. No one rides my horses...not even me. They aren't broken. Even tho our place is remote...there is a lot of boat traffic on the bayou in the summer. This is MY place...at the time, my husband hardly ever came out here because he was working, but I was here every day. We didn't even know the woman or the kids. Later they tried to recant, but the charges couldn't be dropped. It took 15 months and cost us $60,000. Now, if that won't give you a sorry outlook on the human race, nothing will.

Kudos to you Tina for teaching your nanny boy to love Nature. In the years to come if we humans are to continue living on this Earth we will need young people who have been raised to honor Nature.

LOL LOL When I first read your post I thought what's the problem, college will get him out of your hair!!! Then I realized your are writing about your baby going to kindergarten and I felt your future pain. It's been 39 years since my first 'went away' and I still remember my separation feelings!

WS has come into my life too late for any help from my sons or grandchildren as they are all adults but they still help with major yard work when I need it.

For four years I have been a nanny for this family. There are two boys but the older one lost interest in gardening when he got into sports. But my little Dylan still loves to be outside with me working in the garden. He even goes over and pulls off pieces of spring onions and munches them. These aren't my grandkids but a great substitute since my grandkids live far away. I must think positive and hope I get a new nanny family where I can interest the children in gardening. Are there any other nannies on gardenweb?

Are you still going to be nanny for them? Like in the summer or part time?
Remember every ending also has a new beginning. When my middle son(I thought he was the last!!)went off to school I went into his class and did a "mini class" on trees. The kids learned how important trees are to the Earth then we all ordered trees from Arbor Day Foundation. When he was younger he would pick out plants to give the teachers at the end of the school year.

How wonderful that you are instilling the love of gardening and caring for nature into a youngster - grandchild or not it is still a wonderful bonding time. I am sure you will have more opportunities in the future but each one will be special in his/her own way. Enjoy this summer with him and teach him as much as you can.....

Brandy I won't be doing part-time for Dylan and Cody because I need full time work so need to find a new family. I teach nanny training for an agency so they will help with my placement. A new family is out there for me, I'll be fine over time.
