Ken - Question on P. p. Golden Feathers

I guess this question is for anyone but I knew Ken posted some info on Picea Pungens 'Golden Feather' a while back.....

I'm trying to verify a couple of things on this specimen

1) Does the color flush last very long?

2) I know this tree ends up pretty large but I'm curious on its actual growth rate. I've read a couple of disagreeing rates and know that you've had one now for some time so I thought you could give me some accurate info of what to expect.

3) And do you have any recent pictures of it?

i have no clue what it will do in zone 7 ....

it seems to me... based on pix dates ... that it is about a 2 week show .... up here for me .... but it really depends on ambient temps ....

it has to be warm enough for the pungens to bud .... but if it stays cool enough, once they push ... then the show is 2 weeks ....

but some years .... it seems to go straight to july temps .... and the show can be very short ... the dates on the pix indicate that this happens, pretty reliably around 5/20 .. the only problem being.. i never went out and snapped a pic after it turned green ...

how that translates to your zone, is speculation counselor ...

if i were you ... i would go cheap and small .. and enjoy the heck out of it for as long as you can.. you can probably get it for less than a fancy lunch.. so what is the hesitation ...

growth rate ... a bit less than a green tree ... or a blue ... but since it reverts to green ... it is basically the annual growth rate of pungens ...

when you plant a 'bunch' ... or in volume ... the odds of failure increase ... you really did not expect 100% success did you ... simple answer .. is that one was bad to start with.. even though you noticed nothing at planting ... when i do volume.. i always keep an extra or two ... or if you did a long row .. in fall.. move one of the end ones to fill a gap ... too much water would seem to tend to affect them all ... lack of water .. is higher odds on one .... but at this coffee fueled moment.. i cant say why.. other than gut reaction .. lol ken

sorry it took a bit of time.. very busy weekend ... this is a splendid plant... but i want you to see this pic.. so your head doesnt explode IF it happens ... in MI ... all yellow .. towards white tissue.. can burn off.. in a bad winter.. especially the one after transplant... NEVER FORGET.. life is all in the buds.. and even if it goes nudey .... if the buds stay hard and brown ... it will reflush ... its never going to be a dense pine .... i swear to God i loaded all the BRV pix.. but they arent showing for me right now..maybe tomorrow ... look at the leader growth on a pic of the whole.. looks about 12 inches to me .... so it is a bit less than a standard green dens pine ... side shoot growth looks a bit less at maybe 8 ... this could easily be candle pruned.. to make it fuller .. denser.. and more shapely .... ken

'Stilton Cheese' and 'Brotzman Blue' are the same plant. Dave Dannaher was given a small plant of 'Brotzman Blue' years ago with no name on it so he called it Brotzman Blue to recognize the source of the plant. After many years Tim finally put a name on it since Dave Dannaher was selling the plant. The plant is slow growing, Color is similar to a blue seedling picea pungens and the spring color as stated above is a light cream to light yellow.

Thx for the update. Great info and great pics. I love the tree in full color contrast. But I have to wonder if this short show would be like so many of the flowering trees I've had over the years that you buy for that beautiful spring show and then it's over each year in a week or less, and the rest of the time it's just another tree.

My hesitation was I'm running out of space for new specimens so I'm getting really picky about what new things I put out there.

And the Jag handle isn't law based as most think. It's a handle I started using about 20 years ago when I first started using computers. I lived in Texas and loved old Jaguars.

Now I'm an Okie......but still love old Jaguars. Thanks for helping me make my decision.
