Poor growth in Dawn Redwoods

mgrab

This will be the thrid year for 3 dawn redwoods. All are planted in the same region of my yard (where previous owner foolishly cut down trees). Two get direct sunlight most of the day one gets dappled light most of the day. One started out great the first year and did nothing the second. While the other in direct sunlight did nothing the first year and started to take off late last season. Now when I mean "take off" they have only grown at best 2-3 feet. The one in dappled light has done nothing. Soil is thin layer of top soil and mostly sand with some clay deep but yard drains very well. I have watered daily by hand during the hot months and fertilized with Holly Tone in fall and early spring. When I planted I added peat mulch. Am I missing something? Why am I not experienceing the great results I read so much about. I am anxious to re-forest this part of my yard and don't want to waste much more time with something that isn't working. Any advice is appreciated....

Mike
