Dawn Redwood growth pattern

Hi,

I have a 16 year old Dawn Redwood that I planted when it was about 2 ft tall. It has always had a perfect "Christmas Tree" shape and is now about 25 ft tall. It is a gorgeous.

My concern is that it is not as dense as it once was. I am not sure how to describe it, but I can see through it. The branches grow all the way to the ground and in the past I couldn't see through to the other side of the tree...now I can. Is this a normal growth pattern or is something dire happening to this tree?

Also, my husband thinks I should cut the branches off from the bottom about 3 ft. up the trunk. It is so beautiful now I am afraid to alter it. Is there any reason to do ths cutting (other than it makes it easier for him to cut the grass)

One other thing...it has never produced cones. Is it still too young?

Thanks for any input.
