I want to graft my dwarf navel orang tree

I have a dwarf navel orange that i want propagate. I've read up on the process and believe i can do it but i don't know where to get rootstock from. I can only find rootstock marketed towards commercial growers. any help will be greatly appreciated as i have new growth that is ready to be grafted asap

Is there a rare fruit growers association where you live? They may be able to help you with info, even though naval oranges aren't rare fruit.

It depends on rootstocks also. The Standard rootstock can grow to 12 ft high in just 5 years if taken cared of properly. The best material for a rapid growth are those standard or semi-dwarf rootstock in citripots. The citripots are 4"x4"x18" rectangular pot, and are available at Home Depot and WalMart and are sold at less than $12. The citripot citruses will easily overtake the sizes of those more expensive citruses that are in the 5 gallon to 15 gallon rated containers. Hey peaches20, I dont know anything about coffee plants, but there are no genetically dwarf citrus trees. The "dwarf" factor is due to one citrus being grafted onto another citrus root stock. And even then, having a dwarf tree doesnt mean it wont grow to normal size, it just means that it will take considerably longer to rech that size. But if you will be growing these indoors, since i see you are in zone 6, they might stay at a small-ish size. Having said that, i have some mandarin orange tree seeds that i can save for you. My dwarf (grafted) tree is fully loaded with fruit right now. I will also have some mexican sweet lime seeds (also known as key lime) in a couple of weeks. Notice the graft union about half ways up the trunk. This is what is classified as a dwarf citrus tree. It will EVENTUALLY grow to the size of a normal, ungrafted tree, but that will take many, many years.

so having moved up from California we needed an orange tree so we bought an orange navel and put it in a pot that we can wheel into the house for the winter. I planted in Miracle gro potting soil then discovered that it may not be good for the tree. At the bottom quarter of the pot I put rocks so that the water drains well. Can I ammend the soil by adding some sand?? or should I pull the tree out and start all over again before it dies?? help will be apreciated.

Well, kind of depends on what you want - juice or eating out of hand. The Meyer is an outstanding lemon. I'm a big fan like John. I use the Meyer for cooking, all my lemonade, and for my Limoncello. But, I couldn't be without a Valencia orange, as that makes the best orange juice. I love my Cara Cara as I think it's the best eating out of hand navel orange. Navel oranges will produce juice, but navel oranges contain a much higher chemical that causes the juice to become bitter if refrigerated, so traditionally navel oranges, like the Cara Cara, are for eating out of hand, whereas the Valencia is for both eating out of hand and juicing. So, decide what your grandmother would prefer, and that's your choice :-) Then, just get the other one for yourself, and you can swap fruits! Patty S.

First, I would start a new thread that addresses "looking for citrus rootstock"; you might get a lot more responses.
Second, be sure you understand what rootstock you want; as in dwarfing rootstock will give you another dwarf orange, while standard rootstocks will give you a standard size tree. Also dwarf rootstocks tend to grow slower and take longer to make fruit.

Go back in time to early 2010, and plant some suitable seeds.
Otherwise, sow them now and wait two or three years for them to be big enough.

What if you have access to a tree whose rootstock has grown up through the tree? Can that be air-layered to use as a larger rootstock for grafting the orange tree to?

Yes and no. It is difficult to root a sucker; and even if you are successful, the root won't be very strong. I think if you ask around at a local nursery, you might find someone who has some rootstock that you could get.

I think you could use the sucker as long as you dont remove it from the host tree. That would be cool. Just cut every sucker, leave it rooted, graft on whatever you want. You will have a candelabra of a multi-budded citrus tree...lol
