Hah! Thanks Resin. I know my spelling is terrible - always has been. No excuses here but pure lazyness and a few cold ones. :-o I even spelled Sequoia wrong in the original post!LOL

That Serbian spruce has incredible architecture and seems to be growing just fine in this climate.

How did you ascertain those firs are Abies Grandis? I assume A. procera has a different mature shape? I figured they were to big for A. amabilis.

Yep, I'd expect Serbian Spruce to do well; it does here too, and is generally an adaptable species in terms of growing conditions (it does have a problem in being rather susceptible to Armillaria root rot, but that's unlikely with an isolated single tree like that).

Abies procera does indeed have a different crown shape, with stiffer branching in particular. A. amabilis can be that big (but is very 'difficult' away from strict rainforest conditions, so probably wouldn't there); also the ones I've seen had a different crown shape too.

Nice pics! Doing well indeed! The pics of the two Giant Sequioas on Rhinefield Road are absolutely staggering! It's not suprising they do well there since, IIRC, Giant Sequoias once grew there millions of years ago. It seems of the many species that grow well in the UK also do well on the NW Pacific coast and vise-versa.

Sorry to throw a cultivar into your species party, but I drive by this Picea orientalis 'Skylands' all the time while working and still can't believe I don't have one yet.

Looking NORTH over the Mississippi River which you can barely see. This is the only place where the river actually runs north/south. An interesting fact about this area. Davenport and Bettendorf Iowa are across from here.

I think this is a Picea omorika near my house that I saw on a walk with the 2 kids this evening. I'm guessing omorika but I was kinda frazzled with the 2 tots. No cones that I could see and couldn't get a look at any bark since the 2 year old wanted to get back for after dinner ice cream. One of those long evenings where I needed to get them out of the house to give the misses a breather.

You won't see any meteors. It'll be cloudy. It always is for the Perseids.

Dax, I just noticed that Ponderosa pine. That might be one of the best I've seen pictured east of the Mississippi R. The documented VA & MD "champion" Ponderosas aren't nearly as impressive. Hard to be sure, but I don't see any needlecast damage on that specimen.

Gives hope for my Ponderosa & Jeffery pine saplings. The Jeffery pine put out an 18", thumb-thick candle this yr -- the big, new terminal buds are almost at eye-level now.

A pinus wallichiana at Dawes Arboretum, Newark OH. According to the accession, it was planted in 1942 and I would say it has experiences some rather cold winters in it's lifetime

It looks more like P. à schwerinii to me (P. wallichiana à P. strobus). Can you get a cone from it? (please post pics on a new page, this one takes an eternity to load now!)

Hey Beng!

That Ponderosa couldn't be any healthier than any other conifers in my neck of the woods. There aren't many around but several do show the same consistency of health... which is rare for an older tree.

Same with these Rocky Mountain Douglas Firs with the exception that I've never seen an old specimen that wasn't diseased and had a lack of needles. These are everywhere compared to the slim pickings of Pinus ponderosa, but aged ponderosa's look much better. I guess it's simple math if you know where I'm thinking from.

I'll see if I can get some more photos and start a second thread (or anyone else should) for the less-fortunate internet connection speed back country folk. I've been 'meaning' always to do this since it's still kind of a fun topic really. Anyways, thanks for your observation.

There's maybe 50-100 Coastal Redwoods planted there along with one Giant Sequoia and many other non-natives!

These Coastal Redwoods are truly a magnificant species! The biggest one was about 5 feet in diameter. Had no idea how much bigger the've got over the last decade!

That ID is a Hemlock, but I'm not smart enough to say which one. If I were to guess, I'd say Tsuga canadensis.

Okay, thanks for the ID. The weather is very dark and rainy right now, and will be till around May. I need a new camera w/ a tripod for time exposers as the lighting conditions in the understorey are abysmal. Will take more pics of the Yew!

This thread hasn't been visited since October but today I enjoyed reading and looking at pictures. It gave me great pleasure. Thank you so much. It reminded me of many trees I see in parks and private properties. Particularly trees I have seen in Northern Ontario. Sometimes the beauty and form are quite overwhelming. On sunny days the trees exude a piny scent and in the early morning mist settles on needles and sparkles until sun dries the droplets. Perhaps I should consider carrying a camera with me when I go out. Liliana
