Comments (72)I don't quite know what happened with my post. I've seen the text go to the right margins when a photo is too large, but my photos were all "normal" sizes....... Molie, now I just want to cry!! I ordered a paprika earlier last year to go in a bed where I have crimson Pygmy barberry and wanted a hotter colored bed. They shipped me cherry pie by mistake. Called them and they sent a replacement. Sent cherry pie again, so they must have had them all mislabeled. I kept both in the bed, but they're both going to get ripped out and moved because the cherry color just doesn't work and I really yearn for the orange. Now that I see what paprika really looks like in your garden, I'm going to try again to find them. Bill, your garden is VERY special. Don't ever underestimate it. You should self-nominate for the Garden Conservancy Open Days program. It's a real gem that other gardeners would really enjoy. I just looked at my camellia that I purchased earlier this year (thanks to your pictures!) and it has ONE bud! Woo HOO! It's such a little plant I really didn't expect anything. In your experience with smaller camellias, do you think the bud will actually open? I'm half expecting it to whither on the plant. Or have you bought all of yours a bit bigger? If its better to answer this question on your camellia thread that's fine with me....See MoreShow Us Your Landscape/Gardens - A Photo Thread - January 2020
Comments (21)Pretty cat, Sue, on its matching couch. It looks very warm and comfortable indoors. We got maybe an inch of snow before midnight and it's been slowly melting and condensing since then. I did shovel some of it to clear a path and make sure the birds could reach the seed on the ground. I probably could have waited for Mother Nature to do the job for me, but I get protective of the birds and critters. Temperatures are supposed to be closer to normal for the next week. Comments (19)Claire, Very smart, I should have taken more photos of the daffs before the rain we are expecting today. Mine are really just opening up. I hadn't heard of 'Karenoma' and it's nice. I like the long cup. And they are nice and erect. 'Toby the First' is a cute name. I have tried to buy bulbs known for naturalizing, but my soil is on the heavy side which I imagine doesn't help. I have 'Flower Record' and 'Ice Follies' both are said to be good naturalizes and for me, they do always come back and sometimes in larger patches, but what I've found in the past 5 years, is that when I have dug up spots that I wanted to move to another location, that there are a lot of bulbs and I have had the opportunity to increase the amount in the garden, by dividing and potting them up in the spring right after bloom and then planting them in a new spot in the fall. I have had disappointments, because my expectation is that once planted, the bulbs are going to expand in size and number of blooms, similar to a perennial, so that by year 3, I'd expect them to have a footprint 3x larger than the first year of bloom. I have a couple of spots that seem to be the same size with no more blooms than the 1st year, which surprises me. I plan on doing more digging and moving this spring and fall and order more bulbs in the fall as well. I've also decided to buy late blooming daffodils over the very early ones, just because of the variability in the weather. I just hate seeing them come up and bloom and then get hit by cold weather or snow and then look awful the rest of the season. Along the lines of how I feel about Peonies, when it rains the first few days after the blossoms open. [g]...See MoreShow Us Your Landscape and Gardens - A Photo Thread - October 2022
Comments (22)NHBabs, it makes my heart glad to see you enjoying every last minute of your NH vistas. I am so happy you will be near family, and happy you are soaking in as much beauty of your time here before you leave. I have loved ALL of your natural scenes in all seasons! Fothergilla was one of my "must haves' and I never got one. Yours sure are beautiful! I hope the next person in your home loves the beauty you left behind. Your amsonia color looks about equal or slightly better than mine in previous years. Mine are more full than yours, and I think this year I might actually get some decent color finally...maybe (see below). Thank you for posting a pic. PM, your yard looks amazing after the rains! You would never knew the experienced drought. Your mums look great. Are they perennial or annual? This is the fist year I am seeing decent yellow in my Amsonia hubrichtii. Murphy's Law--must be because I just posted my disappointment in them. here they are with beautyberries. I have a sapling witch hazel which I cannot figure out where to plant. It is in a pot, but this fall I got my first little flowers. I was so excited! My "i hate gardening" friend has some monkshood. Boy, am i going to work on getting some of this beauty! My Sheffield mums get smaller every year. I should divide them, but each spring it seems like they barely come back, so how do you divide that? I think voles damaged my asters, and then the deer pruned them way too late in the season. I am getting flowers finally, but they are all SMALL plants this year! Caldendula reseeds so happily, and it blooms until frost. This is one reseeding annual I am very glad to have. Finally, as the sun heads farther south to the horizon, it's glare on the water sparkles like diamonds. You can't see the sparkle, but I hope in this picture you can expand it and see how it shines....See Morefloral_uk z.8/9 SW UK
