Fall Swap (Ral/Garner) Date? (trying to avoid vacation conflicts)

We are planning to take the kids on a Disney cruise in September and I don't want it to be at the same time as the Ral/Garner Fall Swap if at all possible :-)

We are planning it now and I can still change the week or so that we will be gone at this point.

Is there a date for the swap set yet? Or when would be the safest time to be gone (last week, first week?)

I was thinking of mid Sept but I was wondering how everyone else felt after last years. I think I remember everyone enjoying the earlier date as opposed to Oct. I'm pretty sure it will be at Lake Crabtree like this years Spring Swap but it will be at the larger shelter (which is near the shelter we had). So just to pick a random date I will say September 15th. But I haven't talked to the park yet so I don't know if it is available, if they want us back, or if they have time constraints on how early they'll take a reservation.

Keep in mind that after the ball gets rolling all swap info will shift over to the Exchange subforum here on Carolina Gardening.

---Mid-September (15th or 22nd) sounds good. It provides enough time to get new plants settled in before the advent of cool weather. And Lake Crabtree is good for us since it is so much closer than Garner, though I still like the Lake Benson site.

ok- jean first. yes, i'd love the ostrich fern come spring. i dug a few from PA/home this summer and we'll see if they took. they have roots to china, even the small ones. dehlia's purple is impossible to find on the net. i got it from my garden mentor and have no idea where she found it. she has something like 250 old varieties, and she's been gathering for many years, so who knows. since you want veilchenblau and alicia asked for the dehlia's, i'll give that one to her. i'll keep throwing trimmings in a pot like i've done before and cross my fingers that i get it to root again- it's much easier to dig a sucker of. yes, veilchenblau isn't too thorny. you'll still get scratched pretty good when you go to prune it though. the thorns it does have are a decent size and easy to see. the reason your asclepias didn't come back is the kind he gave you isn't perennial here- you'd have had to take it in- it's asclepias currasavica. you want a. tuberosum, which isn't quite as pretty but is dead easy and hardy here. and it develops a long tap root, so put it where you want it, because after it's about 6 mos old, it's nigh impossible to move. i'd be tickled with some yellow seeds if you get them. i don't need any of the others, but am always happy with rocks! :) i'd be really careful with maypop here- esp the native blue one- it is pretty invasive. you can always grow it in a big pot with no contact with the ground. that said, karen, i'd love some p. lutea if you can dig some. i'm happy to bring you veilchenblau, and am thrilled you got pink pillar to root. that one is tricky, so kudos! it's one of my very faves. i've never gotten the rash from rue, but have always worn gloves around it as my skin is pretty sensitive. i do get poison ivey pretty bad. fyi, about 10% of folks who get PI, also have reaction to the sap of english or boston ivy- so beware if you need to pull a patch. sorry magick- if it wasn't you i can't figure who it was i got the rue from in spring. jean, maybe you can reread that thread? i have ruellia, but i don't know which one. it's about 18" high, flowers are 1.25" long & across, and its leaves tend to be a bit bronzy. i might be able to get 1 more plant; i have to dig one for alicia and brenda.

First, my heartfelt condolences to John - no matter how expected a loss may be, it's still a numbing shock. May your trip home for the final tributes and the inevitible chore of setting affairs in order be as safe, pleasant and painless as possible. This touring thing is such a great idea and the first date will set the pace for fine tuning as the year progresses. Now, on the 23rd of June I will welcome all GWC gawkers from morn to early afternoon! Early birds welcome - I'll make sure I've got both eyes open by 8 am and keep the coffee & lemonade stand manned until 1 pm or so. Parking: My driveway takes two cars, but then the side gardens disappear, so on-street w/out blocking drives or mailboxes (that seems to work for the garage salers) can work for this! I'm still working on my 'puppy wrangling' plan (that'll be the biggest challenge!) - will have it figured out by then. I haven't checked the kids meet schedule but hopefully if there is a meet scheduled that weekend it will be local. oogy4plants I can bring loads of cell packs, pots and plug trays. Let me know how many you can use. If I can't make it to the swap I should be able to drop them at Henrietta's prior to the swap or you can pick them up from me. Flower Shows in 2006

Hie thyself to a store and buy the new issue of "People, Places, Plants" magazine. It has a complete rundown of all the flower shows in New England, and there are a bunch more than I ever knew about. It also has a great article about Allen Haskell's son and another landscape designer who will be doing a knock-your-socks-off (sounds like) exhibit at the Boston show. Allen Haskell used to do the most spectacular exhibits at that show and is, of course, now departed this earth. IMHO, no New England gardener can do without this magazine. And Sedum37, Pearl Harbor is #1 on my list to visit in Hawaii. I am reading "At Dawn We Slept" about the attack right now--chilling. My father was a WW2 vet, two of my uncles were in German prison camps--one shot down over France and one captured in battle. My sister in law's father was on a ship at Pearl Harbor and survived the attack--still with us today. You can be very sure I will visit and pay tribute to my parents' generation, and to those who did not come home.

Ahhhhhh. now we've done it!!! the faint smell of "swap" in the air has awakened Brenda. I'm mostly surprised it wasn't her to bring it up first.

Hmm. I am not sure, but I have the worst luck with garden web events being on the only day(s) I have a conflict that I can't move! haha
In the spring, I was flying back in town the day of the swap and this fall I will be flying out of town on Sept 14 and coming back Sept 23 - so I will miss it if it is either of those weekends. I usually plan my vacation trips ahead of time before swap dates are decided, so hopefully next year my luck will change :-)

History:
year1, Spr 06 - so new, had no plants to bring other than natives and trees
year1, Fall 06 - husband had to go to hospital day of the swap
year2, Spr 07- went to visit sick aunt out of town, and flew back same day as swap
year2, Fall 07 - likely will be out of town (plan to be gone from Sept 14-24)

But even with my luck, I must say that when it does work out, there is nothing more wonderful! I love this idea! Like the GardenWeb swaps but no packaging or plants arriving stressed :-)

Oh, ho! This is exciting news. Was just chatting in another thread about the fact that it appears I've got more Italian Arum than I can handle, so if it works out, I too would love to attend!
