Help me choose a clematis please?

I live in a mobile park. I want to plant a clematis on the west side of my neighbors mobile home (my property) it's along side my my driveway. The area gets morning shade and afternoon sun. I have a white trellis. I would like something that grows fairly quickly. Any ideas? My home is cream colored, with olive green shutters. I'm thinking cream with the green leaves would look nice or maybe white? I don't want purple or pink. Thanks soooo much for all your help and I appreciate everyone's suggestion.

For a westerly exposure in zone 8b, I generally advise people to choose a type III clematis, preferably one of the viticellas, since they tend to hold up to hotter conditions better than the type IIs. However I see that you are in British Columbia so the type IIs may do fine for you since you are so far north.

Any newly planted clematis is not going to be a quick grower as they tend to spend more time the first few years developing their root systems. In subsequent years, they tend to be more vigorous.

As to specific recommendations, I still tend to lean towards the type IIIs just due to my experience with them so would suggest just off the top of my head Huldine or campaniflora. You could always use sweet autumn clematis but they are so over used and can be seedy so I hesitate to recommend that one for you. If you want something that would bloom earlier in the season you might want to consider a white macropetala or alpina. If you want something that would be evergreen, one of the armandiis would work. There are several montanas that are white but they might be too big for your space.

The type IIs are not my favorite group of clematis and I don't grow any white ones except for Duchess of Edinburgh which is not a fantastic grower for me. I will leave it up to others to suggest cream or white flowering type II clematis.

I find Type IIIs much more vigorous than Type IIs and I'm in the Pacific Northwest. I have had mildew problems on the IIIs though and I know my friend in Vancouver BC does as well. He ripped out Comtese de Bouchard (sp) due to severe mildew. I'm trying to find a place for Huldine though. She is so pretty with the mauve stripe on the back.

Thank you everyone for all your help. gardengal, thanks I will check the other forum. Sorry about my cross post. I will stay in the clematis forum. Buyorsell-can I ask you why you think Huldine would be a good choice? I love the white. I think it will go lovely against my dark red cedar fence. The cedar posts are dark green. I get morning shade along the fence until around 2pm and hot afternoon sun after that. West exposure. Would it be happy there? Caroline - I like the idea of Montana because it's fast growing. You will have to put something up for them to climb the fence. Using green vinyl coated fencing is the easiest way to do it. Most of these will reach the top of the 6 foot fence and then cascade back down on themselves which is how most plants do in nature when they reach the top of their supports. I personally think this draping back down is attractive.

Of the recommendations so far, I think Huldine and Marie Boisselot are the winners. Huldine will probably be easier to find. She's also a show stopper because of the prolific blooms. I have one in both my garden in the Portland area and at our home at the coast. It explodes each spring with lots of lovely foilage and is covered with blooms. The flowers are white with a mauve overtone and the lovely mauve stripes on the back. The flowers tip a bit toward the sun. My Marie Boisselot tends to grow more vertical with paler foilage. She does rebloom all summer with larger flowers but less quantity. Marie is true white with the lovely contrasting yellow center. The blooms face more directly out from the vine than Huldine. Marie is more of a lady in the garden where Huldine is a bit of a flirt with a more exuberant growth pattern. Good luck and have fun.

nckvilledudes: Thank you very much for your reply and very helpful tips. I googled the Clematis's that you mentioned and they are all so beautiful. I really like the huldine and the armandii's sound perfect for me. I think I'll select a Type III.

buyorsell: Thanks for sharing your experience in getting the PM on your Type III's. Is yours growing on a wall or on a trellis? I'm going to put mine on a trellis so it will have good air flow around it, instead of on the wall. I'm not sure, but couldn't that possibly make a difference? Just my own amateur thoughts.
