Dwarf Key Lime Tree- Brand New

Ok, I just ordered a dwarf key lime tree from Acorn Springs. They were supposed to hold it until temps were above freezing, but held it until temps were in the teens here. It is now dropping leaves like crazy and has black spots on the tops of some leaves with faded like spots on teh underneath. It is front of a south facing full sun window. I also turn on my grow lamp at night as well. Do I need to try to return it or is there something that I can do? Thanks in advance!

Have you dealt with Acorn Springs before? If you are unsure how they react to customer complaints, I would let them know as soon as possible that you may have to request a replacement and your concern about the shipping time. I would get on record as having a problem immediately.

It may be that they will be able to suggest something you could try.

Acorn Springs didn't impress me, so I encourage you to contact them over and over till they respond. They are great when you want to purchase! I ordered an olive tree, and instantly many leaves got brown tips. Some were yellow and fell off. I tried to reach them by phone and email. No response at all! I didn't even suggest a return. I just wanted to know what to do. On Garden Web someone suggested to repot, fertilize immediately, and so I did that. Took the poor thing to a nursery here in town and she told me what olives like. Whew!! Finally no more new brown tips, many leaves staying green, but no new leaves yet.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like the growth is a good thing (it is growing from the top of the tree and not the rootstock). It has continued to grow and it approximately 24" tall now. It is coming directly out of the top of the tree and straight up, so I think I will keep it around. Until now, the tree had mostly grown out instead of up. I had planned to repot the tree in the next few weeks, so hopefully my much bigger tree will be happy in its much bigger pot. I don't know why it picked now in the middle of winter while sitting in a mostly shady alcove to explode, but I'm not complaining.

I agree with Citrange on this. Way too large a pot, and not a good potting medium. I would search for "511 mix" on our forum for a great container potting medium. Or, if you can find it in your area, Farfad Professional Heavy potting mix (again, search our Forum for "Farfad" to get the best recommendations for this pre-packaged mix). I would do this right away, your little tree is failing rapidly. The good news, is citrus are very resilient, so if you can get this tree potted up in a much smaller pot, about 1/2 the size you currently have it potted in, and in about 2 or 3 weeks, after it has settled down a bit, start fertilizing with DynaGro Foliage Pro, you should start to see a come back. John is right! You can get fruit on cuttings with ease. I make cuttings all the time and will get fruit even on a 4 inch high cutting. In fact, in some cases, I much more prefer cuttings for potted citrus. It will fruit in less time than that if you give it what John suggests. Mike

Amccour, actually, it really doesn't matter since your Key Lime is confined in a container. A potted dwarf can grow 6-8' in warm climates like CA and Fl, smaller in cooler climates or at a much slower pace. Standards grown in-ground reach, what 15-20', maybe taller? But, grown in pots, (in cooler climates) will be about the same result as a dwarf. So you don't have anything to fret over. Unless of course you consider 3' too tall? :) Is your lime a bush or tree? Well, I e-mailed them (by the way their plant info e-mail does NOT work). So, I e-mailed the sales and Ty e-mailed me the next day asking for pics, which I sent. He said it looked like a health tree and asked if I had taken cuttings! I said no, I am not that dumb. So, he immediately put into process a refund for me. As far as the tree, I sprayed it with a soap waster solution. I will probably take it to a nursery too to see what they say. Thanks for the advice.
