Sad about orange and yellow coneflowers...

Last year I planted many different varieties of new coneflowers. My yellow "Sunrise" and orange "sunset" never returned this year. Razz-a-ma-tazz, big giant, and double decker are all doing well.

How did the rest of you make out with these new plants?

I personally could not justify the cost of them until I see some feed back on how long they last in the garden. Of course I am the same person that spends close to $30 each year for 2 mandavilla that I KNOW won't winter over for me no matter what I do - lol

They are beautiful - at least the pictures are. I have not actually seen them in a garden center just mail order. Will be anxious to see what others say....

My 3 Sunset and 3 Orange Meadowbright that I planted last spring and then moved last fall are all doing just fine. My 3 Sundown that I bought and planted last fall from a local nursery are fine. I had worse luck with a batch of coneflower (Sundown, Little Giant, Ruby Giant and Prairie Frost) that I mailordered and received last fall. Got some more from the same place this spring and I noticed that there was a lot of foliage and very big top growth on a very small rootball. So now I'm wondering about whether or not the size of the rootball is a predictor of sucess or failure? All of these coneflower are planted in the same bed (lasagna garden, raised, great drainage, full sun).

hi glenn never got my money back, they said they changed colour because i let them fruit on there first season, i still have a laugh about that, even the rubus research in the uk told them that this was impossible!! treasured plants is seasonal, only trouble is the advertise very late and supply bareroot, so hit and miss if the plants take in time, the golden everest i grow outside fill a row very quickly, has thick sturdy canes sometimes thicker than my fingers, and up to 6ft canes,a summer floricane, doesnt suffer mould ( like fall gold, golden queen, over here, berries are good size ,well formed, double the size of golden queen and bigger than fall gold, taste is good aswell, i grow the anne in my polytunnel for safety ( dont wanna lose her) and find it very very good, but not quite as good as golden everest,and crop a little less, i found noursefarms for the 1st time the other day, amazing plants but think only ship to the u.s. , i also do a bit of experimenting, and have grown an orange raspberry if anyones intrested email me, as i dont know how to post pics on the forum yet, regards stew

In the same bed, terrene, are two regular looking pink ones. They are nice and tall but look like the regular E. purpurea. I'm going to ask neighbors if they would like to have them. They are growing right up next to my Sundown and I need to move them. I think you might be right about crossing the Big Sky plants with E. Paradoxa. You might get something really special and different. I have a friend who has offered to grow out some of the seeds from my tangerine orange seedling just to see what we get. I'm definitely taking her up on it. Since Paradoxa has been blooming about the same time as this seedling, maybe more crossing has taken place by the bees. You just never know. It's really awful that the voles ate your tall cross. It sounds like a really nice plant and I love the idea of the tall flowers. Linda

Thanks Virginia! Yes, I did order Pax last year. It was a bit tiny so I put it in a pot to grow on a bit. Sadly, I'm forgetful when it comes to watering, so it didn't do much all year and is still tiny. I think I'll just put it in the ground this winter. I wonder what your mystery rose is? It's lovely anyway. My camellia hedge is doing well! (Probably because I didn't torture it by putting it in a pot and forgetting to water). It's still not really recognisable as a hedge, more a series of tiny plants doing battle with weeds. But I went with Brushfield's Yellow, which flowers in late winter, so if I'm lucky I might see one or two blooms in a few months :)

Hi everyone, I am trying to prep my garden and wondering whether I should pull up all of my coneflowers. I didn't know that they had yellow asters until I looked up why coneflowers turn green. I noticed the weird look last fall, but thought, "HmmmÃ¢ÂÂ¦ I must have planted an exotic one and didn't remember." Do I really need to pull up all of them NOW or should I wait til they come up to see which are healthy? I have 50% perennials in the garden, much of which are resistant to the aster yellows. The coneflowers and rudbeckias are just the 2 that might be impacted.

Oh, boo hoo! I was wanting some of the orange and yellow coneflowers, but would not spend the money for them. However, I did plant a package of seeds...Prairie Yellow..and only one of the seeds came up. I planted them at the proper time in a raised bed where hundreds of other seeds took off and grew quite well.

I have 'drooled' over the 'doppleganger' variety since they first came out, but spent my money on roses instead. At least the roses are blooming and I have been able to propogate some of them!!!

I will just be happy with the old purple coneflower. They seem to be happy right where I have them. And they look pretty with the roses!
