byrdlady's photo
About me: I am convinced I was a plant in my other life. A die-hard gardener describes me, but my neighbors refer to me as "the crazy bird lady." I have lived in NC for 9 years, after leaving a hard-worked garden in Maryland. I found the challenges of gardening amidst intense heat, draught, and hard, rocky, clay soil. We live on 1 acre and there was not a flower in the yard when we moved in. I have planted 8 large areas with the help of plenty of home made leaf mulch and a strong hubby. Most of the garden is perennial, featuring 550+ daylilies and a large collection of sedums and salvias. I have tried to keep it butterfly and byrd friendly, practicing IPM. We have been the host to 3 winter hummingbirds in the last 5 years due to the plantings. A pond and waterfall complete the picture as well as 5 birdbaths and 14 birdfeeders. While living in Maryland I was fortunate to be able to take a Master Gardener's course. That opened up many new experiences and opportunities. I write an occasional article for a nature-type magazine and have several photos published. My 2 sons are grown and by occupation I am a retired RN. My garden has been my "refuge" during trying times, and I can always find an answer, out in the garden. I love meeting, talking with and writing to other gardeners!

Commented: Where to Get Rescue Plants NETWORK! I would tell everyone you know you are looking to rescue plants. I did the first year we moved to NC. I was amazed at what people gave me (Of course I had to dig it all up.)
