Good sources for IDing native woodland plants?

Anyone know of any good links or books for this? i.e, trout lilly, blood root, etc. There are many in my yard that I would like to transplant or I am just curious about, I would really like to be able to ID them. It would also be interesting to know what I am taking pics of when hiking this summer.

I'm a hands on person when it comes to learning to identify. Some fun places that you could see them are, Niche's in Chapel Hill; has a nice display garden with natives, also pics at their site. NC Botanical Gardens have several gardens you can visit. Also the JC Arboretum in Raleigh or Tanglewood near Winston Salem. There's also the NC Native Plant Society and up in Boone there's the Daniel Boone Native Garden.

I agree with Rootdigger as to studying plants on site where there are labels, and the links she has given are very good ones. However, in a class I recently took they recommended Lawrence Newcomb's WILDFLOWER GUIDE and the newer edition of WILDFLOWERS OF NC (Justice,Bell, Lindsey)...but the latter is not arranged in any order, so it is difficult to use, IMHO. We also used Dr. Jon Stucky's KEY TO FAMILES AND GENERA OF NATIVE AND NATURALIZED WINTER & SPRING FLOWERING HERBS, VINES, &SHRUBS OF THE RALEIGH AREA, which was fairly easy to use. Since Sqftgarden is in western NC, some of the TN books would also be good. Again, going to gardens where there are labels helped me more than the books did several years ago when I first seriously tried to learn names of these wonderful natives. After seeing them in the garden setting, then I walked around in the mountains and here in the Piedmont and tried to apply what I saw in those gardens and in the books. I am still trying to learn...I keep noticing things that I had not seen before. Oh, if you join NCNPS, you can also join one of the local groups. The Greensboro area group has its own website, and folks often post photos of things for ID.

There are many ferns to contrast with the hostas suggested by amili also heucheras, tiarellas, carexes, solomon's seal for native foliage.For non-native folaige, it's hard to beat Hakone grass. For flowers, the first thing that comes to mind is lobelia cardinalis (red flowers in late summer)or lobelia syphilitica (blue flowers). Another plant to consider is Spigelia which is attractive to hummers as is the lobelia. There is a book published by Timber Press "Native Plants of the Northeast" by Donald J. Leopold that might be helpful to you for native plant suggestions. Pat

The most common Smilax species with dense, round heads and long peduncles in your area is S. lasioneura (Blue Ridge Carrionflower). Smilax herbacea is similar, but would have pubescent leaf blades underneath. It is also much less common in Illinois. Here is a link that might be useful: Smilax lasioneura description

Well... of course, as soon as I post this I find a list from the Arbor Day order (or at least, I think it was that year's order). No idea which is which (which of the ones that came in this bundle actually survived), but could the third photo be a young Sargeant Crabapple? That's on the list, as is Eastern Redbud, Washington Hawthorn, dogwood (I know it's not that), Goldenraintree and crapemyrtle (I remember wondering why on earth they were shipping crapemyrtles to New England!!) In theory (meaning assuming they sent what they said they were sending), it should be one of those -- and the crabapple seems like the only one it could be? I'd be floored if they were shipping free Bradford pears (which is what someone on Name that Plant thought it was as well) -- aren't they considered more or less invasive plants in a lot of areas these days? So I'm hoping for Sargeant crabapple since I wouldn't mind having one of those for the birds (means the little guy can stay right where he is now, in the bird/butterfly garden).

wow! thanks everyone! #2 is definitely not hosta, because my "darling" deer would be all over them! ;-). I will watch to see of they flower, hadn't ever heard of Canadian Lilly of the Valley... Will also watch the other leaves for flowers.....Asters are native to the area. Gardenweb to the rescue, again! ;-). Thank you!

Two other books I use for id of native plants are Great Smokey Mountains Wildflowers (UT Press) by Campbell, Hutson & Sharp, and Wild Flowers in South Carolina by Batson. If you are interested in their propagation and culture, I would recommend 'Growing and Propagating Wildflowers' by Harry Phillips and the staff at the North Carolina Botanical Garden published in 1985 by UNC Press.
