I bet we all have them. You spill a pot, you break a branch. What do you do with the piece?

This pot started out as Jacobean Lily (Sprekelia formosissima). A broken branch from an Echeveria somehow got stuck in the pot. I intended to root it and give it a separate pot, but, the road to H3ll is paved with good intentions too.

At some point, a piece of a Schlumbergera was added. Now, I have this mess of plants I really neither want nor need.

The second pic is not a good intention. I don't want them, and refuse to dedicate a pot to them, but I can't just put them on the mulch pile either. Sedums, Epiphyllums, Aloes, even a couple of Cleistocactus rooted in the tiny amount of soil in the bottom. Please don't condemn, but I understand a certain amount of pity.

What is an average canner load? An average canner load is 7 quarts, 8-10 pints depending on the jars used. That is what most of the approved recipes are based on. Would a smaller canner work inside my home on my electric range? The Presto 23 quart will work inside (or outside) and most electric coil burner stoves. With the canning element that Carol mention it works even better. The smaller presto 16 at. will work on most all non-glasstop stoves and will work on some of them. Glass top stoves are problematic to say the least, for several reasons. So what is the size canner most people use indoors? I want an AA, this canner purchase will be my last Presto 16 or 23, AA 915 or 921. Can't swear to it but I think it is safe to say there are more Presto's in use than AAs. If not more then at least as many. It is your choice of course but don't buy into all the AA hype. I have both brands, several of us here do, plus I have an older model Mirro. They all have pros and cons but both the Presto and the AA will equally out live most of us. The only real concern is that you get a canner size (not a cooker). It must be able to hold a minimum of 4 quart jars for processing to qualify as a canner. That means a Mirro 12 qt. (tho not recommended), a Presto 16 qt. or an AA 915. Like Linda Lou said many of us have Presto canners that are still going strong after 20-30 years and with minimal if any problems. Wife and I have extensive gardens and we easily can 100's of quarts of vegetables and meats annually. We do most of our pressure canning outside on propane. We use all 3 canners and both agree that we prefer our Presto's as they are lighter weight, easier to lift and tote although still quite heavy, easier to seal and unseal, and their weights are easier to monitor than either the AA or the Mirro. Annie, I know tons of people who store pans in their oven. I also just do not get it. The biggest disaster (lately) that I have created is to try to make a batch of bread that makes two loaves in my breadmaker. (Annie's maple oatmeal bread). Well, I never gave it any thought, but when the cycle beeped and I went to get it out to shape and bake, there was yeasty dough all over the counter, the floor, in the bottom of the breadmaker...yikes! We had to take the breadmaker and use a spray hose from the kitchen faucet to clean it out. Didn't know if spraying that water in it would hurt it or not, but I managed to make bread in it yesterday and it worked just fine. But what a mess to clean up!

Honey, there isn't a child alive whose parent(s) have died who doesn't have some regrets. Even the kids who were pretty near perfect can dredge up something to feel guilty about. My mother and I were nit picking at each other the day she died. She had climbed up on a stool to restart her Regulator clock and I found out....well, of course a lecture from me ensued. I was also on to her about eating too much chocolate...her health had started to go downhill, she had been in hospital and rehab and I was determined to fix her. She was 89 years old. I made our supper and brought it in to our TV trays , she said "Oh, you filled my glass too full...", crabbily. I took the glass back, poured some out and then set it down a little hard on her tray. We took a few bites and I was surfing the TV channels, I said to her, "There is nothing on TV", she said back, "I know it". Out of the corner of my eye I saw her head droop down, her breath was coming out in little puffs, and she dropped her fork. She was instantly dead, I called 911, did CPR, etc., the guys got there right away but it was no use. It took me a very long time to get over the fact that our last day together ended like that. One of my daughters said Granny knew you loved her and you know she loved you...that's all that matters. And it really is. We never know when our last earthly time will be with our loved ones, and since we are just living our daily lives in our regular way, not everything is going to come out perfect. I am sure your mom loved you and you loved her, and you both knew it, so accept that you are an imperfect human being with flaws and forgive yourself. You didn't do anything bad, and you definitely did not cause your mom to die of a heart attack. Like the doctor in emergency said to me when I said, oh, if I had just done this, or done that....he said "Don't even start that...it was just your mother's time, and nothing you could have done would have changed that." Please don't torture your Mama's little girl, that's the last thing she would have wanted. Do go for some group counseling...it helps to talk to others who are hurting the way you are, because they understand. A professional would be good, as well. God Bless, and take care.

Hey Sharon - I looked at a dozen or more recipes, and combined what I liked from several.... this is what I came up with. I will caution, several recipes said to let it cure at room temp for 5 - 7 days.... I am not that brave! LOL! Alexa Pork Tocino Prep Time: 5 minutes Cook Time: 30 minutes Total Time: 24 hours, 35 minutes Yield: 4 Servings Ingredients 1-1/2 pounds pork butt, sliced to 1/4-inch thick (I used pork loin) 3/4 cup sugar 1 tablespoon salt 1 tablespoon garlic powder 2 Tablespoons soy sauce 1 Tablespoon rice wine vinegar ÃÂ½ tsp red food coloring oil Instructions 1.In a bowl, combine pork, sugar, salt, garlic, rice wine vinegar, soy sauce and red food coloring. Massage curing mixture on meat until well-distributed and pork slices are evenly colored. Store in a covered container or ziplock bag and refrigerate 1 or 2 days to cure. 2.In a pan, add about 1 to 2 tablespoons of oil and heat over medium to medium high heat. Saute pork sliced without turning, until meat caramelizes. Flip and sautÃÂ© on other side until done. Serve with rice and fried eggs, if desired. Notes: Red food coloring is only to achieve the traditional color of tocino and can be omitted without change to flavor.

you could try to exchange them with other gw'ers, on the exchange pages. you may get something you want or just the satisfaction of giving them to someone who would really appreciate them.

What do I do with them? Eventually they go. Sometimes people who visit express an interest and they get a bunch. I have more plants than I need, so swapping is out. I used to send them out for postage, but I was hosed so many times I quit that. I have donated specimen plants to a botanical garden (their desert exhibit is about 1/3 my donated plants). My wife sponsors a yard sale at a local church, but the plants I send there are usually potted. I wish somebody lived close, the ones in the pics are only the beginning. I mean, how many pots of Huernia keniensis do you need? (I have 3.)

Ask for cash up front. I know I would send you out postage ahead of time if I saw something I liked. But as it is, I am in the same situation as you are. I want to keep my collection to just Sansevieria but some times I see something that really catches my attention.
About half the people pay me back for postage. I will not ask for it. If they ask, I tell them it's on the package I sent them w/my address. I have received mush more than I ever sent out. When you get a $40 plant for $3 to $4 postage. Wow, who can complain.

As you may know, I did succulent sendoffs for years when I lived in SD (and met some wonderful, simply wonderful people while doing so!) and I always required postage up front (either stamps, postal money order or, least desirable, cash) before the 3-6 pounds of yard trimmings was sent to a recipient. It completely avoids the problems you describe.

I completely relate to what you're saying! A passive aggressive strategy I developed is to accidentally on purpose leave some plants outside for the winter. This often backfires, though, because I grow a lot of things that are borderline hardy here and I sometimes end up with something worse - a damaged plant that I don't need or want!

Linda,I am right there. LOL. That always struggling aloe maculata. If it is not 12 degrees, it is 5" rain following the 12 degrees.

If somebody reading this goes to some farmer's markets in DC or Baltimore (NoVa might be included), I can deliver the plants on an appointed day. Might be some other plants thrown in, like some other rooted epiphytic cacti, some other Aloes, etc.
