What Is Your Favorite Blue Clematis??
Comments (31)Save March 28, 2006 at 2:54PM @justjill, I asked about true blue clematis when I first was bitten by the clematis bug and was told that there aren’t any true blue clematis. They all are blue-purple or periwinkle, not a true blue like a few select types of Veronicas or poppies or delphiniums. Or even the true light blue of forget-me-nots or bluets. It is now a dozen years on and I have a huge number of clematis, many of which are “blue” but in reality none are really true blue. All are lovely and there are different amounts of blue to the periwinkles, and the exact shade of blue-purple often varies with the changing light over the course of the day, but no true blue. https://www.houzz.com/discussions/1812254/true-blue-colored-clematis#n=33...See MoreYour Favorite Large Flowered Clematis
Comments (4)A lot of my clematis are too recent to add to my list of favorites, but here is my current list of clematis I would buy again! I have taken pictures of many of these clematis and posted in the gallery. Comments (50)Carol, I don't rank them formally, but I do have favorites, and they change from time to time. Wild Blue Yonder is one of my least favorites because of its fading in heat and awkward growth habit, though this year it's been much better so far. My all round favorite is Ascot. It's not a true purple, but it's always in bloom, and the heat nor the cold bother it. The deer won't even eat it. The Prince just shrivels up so easily in heat. Right now it's incredible dark, almost black, and in a few days when that 102F hits, it will be match stick burnt. So it's not a favorite. The Prince doesn't bloom as much as the other purples either. That's about all I can think of. I didn't mention lavenders because they are a whole different category, but Love Song has certainly risen to the top of my lavender roses. And Carol, thanks again for all your nice comments. Comments (30)Daisy - Thank you for the color observation. Clematis 'Hagley Hybrid' looked muddy here mid coastal Calif. despite being a lovely clear color in some northern garden pictures. Lily - first I should qualify as a pastel lover. No strong contrasts in my garden. My rescued 'Comtesse de Bouchard' hasn't bloomed yet. Do you know the names of the 2 in your 2nd pic? 'Ville de Lyon' has opened its first bloom. YAY! A winner. It's much closer to a pretty rosy color than I expected. I like it better than 'Asao' which was a favorite with my garden friends. 'Rouge Cardinal' was just plain drab wine here. I loved 'Cezanne', a short one for pots. 'HF Young' (big flowers) is an eye catcher and excellent with pale pink roses. I will replace 'Ramona'. Just about the lovliest clematis ever. Ville de Lyon - first year, first bloom with petals still undercurled. love it. Asao Rouge Cardinal - just not a fit with my colors. Cezanne - suitable for pot culture. I think it drowned over our enormous rainfall this winter. Worth replacing. HF Young also may have drowned this winter. Very attractive for pastel lovers. Debating whether to replace or try Mrs. Cholmondeley with less overlapping petals and a pink bar? Look forward to pics of yours....See Morehannesdp
