Yes, you get my point. I don't think it is possible for us up here to ever get ours to get profuse blooming unless we live south of our area.

It would be nice to see if anyone has luck like that up here without running to the store and posting a picture of a newly bought bloomed one.lol

Adeniums. They give me trouble, and I'm in CA 10a. I think our low humidity is a strike against us. I can't seem to coax them into prolific flowering. Maybe I'm just not lush enough in my culture during the active phase.

On the other hand, I am getting a few adenium flowers this week! But it's not what I'd call profuse.

I'm like you here in Ohio. I really can't say that I get too many flowers on any of my plants. My lemon tree gets lemons,none of my epi's ever bloom for me. I'm having a hard time rooting my plumeria's. The plants are in the sun most of the afternoon,but nothing. My desert rose has not bloomed,I'm trying my luck growing from seed now which is going good. A lot of seedlings. Will wait for flowers.

Adeniums are one genus I really don't grow well. I tried them over and over and would lose them in winter when I would follow the expert's advise by keeping them completely dry. So I tried watering them **occasionally** in winter, and I kept one going for about 5 or 6 years. In the 6th year, it finally bloomed for me, but then I lost it the following spring. Dang...

But here's one that'll frustrate you! My mother, one of those old-fashioned "water it once a week" folks, has an Adenium she's probably had 10 or more years. She waters it every week, all winter long, and in summer, she just puts it out on her hot, west facing front porch (it's a covered porch, so it only gets a couple hours of sun in late afternoon) and it blooms like crazy. Now I'd say the southern growers still get MORE flowers - some of those photos are amazing! But I'm stumped that when she defies what the books tell us, she gets an impressively blooming plant!

epis grow quite easily here (Vancouver), but I've had several A. obesums and none of them bloomed, in fact all their leaves fell off and then they just died.

Count me as another that does not have good luck with these. I've had an A. arabicum for two years now, and it's barely grown let alone bloomed. Although right now it's actually growing more than it ever has, probably due to our unusually high temperatures (near 100) and humidity.

is Montreal north of you? Last year I put my 6-yrs from seed plant on the roof. The buds that formed in June fell off but by mid-September it had about a dozen flowers. Well worth it even it it wasn't a monster.

Hello everyone! I hope you are all enjoying your summer thus far.

Joe: I think you are bit north of us. Yes, the few flowers I do get are quite pretty. I do get much more leaf growth than flowers and the wait of a one here and there is still nice.I think many her will never get them as nice as our southern friends, but anything is a huge accomplishment and pretty in its own way. I am still curious though to see if there is anyone out there that has extreme success this far north. It would let me know that there is a possibility to get that many flowers at once.

Penfold: With mine it is not the heat that make them grow, but the strength of the sun and heat combined. I heard that the sun in the southern sates is at most 20% more intense than ours at all summer. Down there I will burn in 10 minutes, but up here it takes a lot longer for me to burn.
I have been able to get one flower close to profusely once , but that was one I left in a glass box over one summer where temps in there reached well over 90 and the sun was on it for most of the day for weeks.

Denise: Moms do have a way with making things happen. I wish I had that gift. That is pretty strange, right? I did find that holding back water for too long in winter actually caused rot and trunk shriveling, while the ones that did make it were watered once the mix dried out and left in a sunny window sill with temps averaging in the low 70's.

SSk22: Good luck with yours. Funny you mention citrus. I have tons of them and I can even get fruit to ripen. I wish DR were just as easy to please with blooming here.

Amanzed: I always thought that DR love dry air. Now that stumps me. I would think Ca. is the place to grow them too.

Maxthedog: Please let us know when and if yours ever flower profusely. That would be nice.

I will Tell you that I did receive two gorgeous ones the other day from our most generous friend Laura here, and they are quite unique and special. I have them in a place that receives over 7 hours of sun and they are growing leaves like crazy. I will take pictures soon.

Hi Mike, My best flowering is late Aug and can last at it's peek into Sept. Even at peek flowering, no of the five I have none of them are as profuse in flowers as the ones in Fla are. To date I've not gotten the southern state(s) display of flower on any of my Adenium.

With inside and outside growing I do have to make a few compromises for the seasons we have, not having as nice a spray of flowers like the DR's in the south is one of them.

Have you ever heard of coconut trees and canapes?

I have these tree sin the yard of my home in PR, and they will not grow like they do even in a warm southern state like Florida.
my Dad told me that they require sun that is even hotter than Florida in order to thrive and I realize that now.

It is a fact that the sun is much hotter towards the equator and that certtain plants thrive nearer to it which brings me full circle to Desert Roses. If I lived closer to it, I would have dozens of these plants!

Your attitude is that of mine Wes but none the less still leaves me curious to see if anyone has defied these odds.

wow mine grow great bloom every year i havent lost a plumeria cutting this year in fact i have 4 inflos my adenium grow so fast i have to trim them every year and bloom great i wouldnt say profusely but i have like 20 flowers or so on them but i fert like crazy

Here they don't bloom full blast until mid-July to August unless you give them extra heat in the spring.

Also, flowering habits vary from plant to plant. Some will only bloom well after a hard prune.

I wouldn't say I'm in a Northern zone, it's Mid Atlantic (MD) but winters are cold and summers hot. I have no problems with DR's. I have one that bloomed continuously for a year and my DR's from seed I got from Thailand are just beginning to bloom. I keep mine in the greenhouse. Very little water, if any, in the winter and I water often during the summer. This is the first of my seed grown Thai DR's to bloom.

Wow, to such a beginner as I am, that gives us northerners hope.

I'm more and more convinced you can grow anything, even Marianas Trench lilies....

While all four of my Adeniums are growing, The Group of Three (obtained from Ol Grumpy Gills) is leafless, having had a hard time in the last few months (but their trunks are still solid). One shows signs of growing leaves, but I'd just like to know what I did wrong (other than the lack of heat, mealy bugs, and sciara flies).

You have to get them to a quick start in the spring. This is hard to do because root loss over the winter slows them down when springtime does finally arrive.

Keeping them "bone dry" overwinter as is often recommended will pretty much guarantee that there will be significant root loss and make subsequent spring growth delayed and flowering poor.

The only way to keep roots alive during the winter is with periodic watering. Of course, if it's too cold then rot may follow. I haven't figured out yet exactly at what point rot favors root sustenance but I think that low temps in the 50's with warmer days is the minimum to still water somewhat regularly. I now keep Adenium, most Pachy and Plumeria at room temperature overwinter. They can certainly tolerate much lower, but are then more likely to be stunted the next growing season.

Just wanted to add, that this plant is poisonous. It is in the oleander family! I know many of us here have cats and dogs. Cats being a big concern, being stinkers who will nibble a plant.

The heat here has been intense!! we hit 101 with the heat index of 112. VERY HOT!!!

I even put some of the new Plumeria cuttings under the trees just to keep them from getting fried...way to much sun for them right now.

Tally me up for a not-so-good adenium grower in the north. I would have to say that it's not warm enough, especially at night, for a long enough time here. Also, the dry, central heat and low light of our houses probably doesn't do much in the way of bloom stimulating. The best success I had was a number of years back, while renting a townhouse. I had no place indoors for my 2 adeniums, so I used a 400w metal halide light for 16 hours a day all winter long. The temperatures ran in the low 70's. I watered when dry, and they actually kept their leaves, and also bloomed all summer long, although not profusely. Then, I moved, and they declined from there as I tried to winter them in a nice sunny south window. Apparently a south window isn't enough, but we'll see, because I bought a small one this spring.

Laura - the Plumie in the photo is Pu'u Kahea. Not much fragrance though.

Joe - each variety of Adenium obesum responds differently to the same conditions. Some are very particular about when they bloom, and will not bloom no matter how hot, sunny or humid it is until first being heavily pruned. And sometimes they need to be pruned right after growth starts in the spring, while others need a drastic pruning right after a flowering spurt.

For the named cultivars, a google search may yield some advice about when to prune, but for the most part trial and error are needed.

I've one adult Adenium obesum. It does bloom, but not every year. It blooms only in years that have hot Summers and when there are no bugs at young flower buds, as bugs make the plant drops its young flower buds.

Jojo! Thanks for that info. I shall have to make sure my cat has no access to them come the winter. As for the stray cats, oops.

Never got my Desert roses to flower. We do have them pre-flowered in the big box stores, but mine grown from seed, never did. Further, their leaves just fell off too, to add insult to injury.

As for epi's, they are profuse flowerers here. Good amount of shade helps with the flowering I found.

I use the same fertilizer as all my other summer plants that are in soil-less mixes - some 6-month formulation Osmocote Plus with micros, along with supplemental Mg (via crushed Lutz Palm Tree spikes) and pelleted gypsum. Every couple of weeks, if I have time and am in the mood, I will give some all-purpose liquid fertilizer.
