I have a large peach colored one that does well for me where others have died. I believe it's called Southern Comfort. Also have a Purple Palace going on two years now. They are in rich soil in a shady site, irrigated regularly and mulched, but elevated ground with good drainage, in my azalea garden. I have lost many through wintertime in the past, either to rot or gopher damage. I also have a Tiarella, lime green with red stripes in the leaves, which I love and it is doing well. It is a cross with Coral Bells and something else. All came from TLC.

I think they can be difficult to grow here in Oklahoma, more due to the heat. Hybrids of Heuchera villosa, H. americana, and H. pubescens, are more heat and humidity tolerant than some others. There are other hybrids of Heuchera such as H. sanguinea, H. pillosisima, H. alba, H. bracteata, H. cylindrica, and many others. These have been used to create hybrids with various traits such as foliage ruffling, flower size and color, foliage size and coloration, heat tolerance, etc. Some "innocent" retailers do sell varieties that are not as tolerant to heat and humidity, to the unsuspecting consumer, so it is wise to know those that are more tolerant of our environment. I grow a species Heuchera, which I believe is villosa, that I grew from seed, and it has fought off the heat and drought like a champ. Heucherellas are also less heat tolerant and are best grown in the Northern states or Northeast Oklahoma at least.

Heuchera 'Purple Palace' is a hybrid grown from seed of H. villosa var. macrorrhiza, a native Heuchera found in the Southeast USA.

One of the largest breeders in the US is Terra Nova Nursery, which also does a lot of breeding of the newer cultivars of coneflower.

Heuchera was then crossed with Tiarella to create the newer xHeucherellas.

One of the biggest issues with Heuchera culture is that they are very susceptible to frost heaving. Frost heaving is caused by alternating freeze/thaw cycles that occur in winter. To protect them against heaving, mulch them very well in winter, make sure they are planted in a well-draining soil since heaving occurs more in clay and water retentive soils. Otherwise, they should do fine.

Heucheras are also short-lived perennials unless they are divided every 3 or 4 years when the crown becomes woody.

Mine are Heuchera Kassandra. Okay. I checked it for heat, and it is tolerant. It is good for our cold area, but dave's garden says to not overwater. i bet i overwater.

I have success with heuchera 7 miles from NE Oklahoma. I have some in pots that lived through the "winter" with no protection. I think they like good drainage, but I do water them. Several of mine lived through last summer with enough success that I bought more this spring. They are easy to divide and the little divisions bounce back and start growing quickly. I think it may be too harsh now for dividing.

Crystal Bridges in Bentonville used them for landscaping in a well drained area that I'm sure has a sprinkler system.
