tomatoes at Long's in SF Bay Area?
Comments (4)GTG, I'm on the other side of the bay. I was looking for one between Redwood City and Sunnyvale. I have seen Sweetwater plants at Whole Foods as well as the local nursery chain, Summerwinds. Another organic grower, Upstarts, is also at Summerwinds and other local nurseries, and sells plants on Sunday mornings at the Menlo Park farmers' market. I am finding a better and better selection of tomato plants, but of course the more choices, the more selective I get. The one I like is Tommy Toe, a large red cherry tomato from the Ozarks that has done well in my garden for a couple years (and produces enough for me AND the squirrels). No one except Fogline seems to grow it, and I don't have a place to grow from seed. For anyone on this side of the bay or a little south, the master gardeners are holding their sale this weekend, Saturday April 1 at the Mercury News west parking lot, 750 RIdder Park Dr., San Jose. They usually have a good selection of plants that are snapped up fast by the most competitive bunch of gardeners I've ever seen....See MoreHeat wave today in the Bay Area
Comments (18)It was 101 yesterday and they are predicting 102, 103 today, tomorrow and Sunday. The twice daily drip watering has kept my flower beds happy. I have moved all my flats of seedlings into the shade and draped some soaker hose over them to keep them hydrated. So far, everything is ok. At least the Santa Anna type winds have calmed down. Those hot winds are tough on plants and people. We are having our Glenn County Fair now. I hope the heat does not keep people away. Tomorrow my 2 DGDs will be walking 2 miles in the fair parade in hot costumes between 10 and noon. We will be sending lots of drinking water to be given to them from their float. Poor girls! Please keep all the kids in the parade in your prayers....See MoreCilantro in winter in Bay Area? Also, question on frost covers
Comments (5)Cilantro: I've seen it grown & flourishing throughout the winter in Zone 9, Sonoma Co (Sunset 14/15). It's really a cool season herb. I've sown this, as well as dill, and while both are growing slowly, they're growing! Oh, and cilantro flowers are great - sometimes I've used them in salsa in place of the leaves. Over-wintering tomatoes & peppers: I'm assuming you just want them to live over till next year & get a jump on next summer's crop, rather than trying for a winter crop? I've had pepper plants live over w/ only a significant leaf mulch for protection (in mild winters, mind you). I've set up a low tunnel for peppers & eggplants this year in hopes that a number of them will carry over till next year & produce really well. I've heard of over-wintered hot peppers producing an early crop in May & another at the more typical time....See MoreRemodeling costs in the SF Bay Area
Comments (24)boy i'll second that, jeffinmonterey. we waited over 6 months for our city to approve our plans and grant us the honor of a permit. they also put us into the design review fasttrack (which dinged us 1800 bucks) all because they couldn't visualize and, ostensibly, are biased against modern design. need to keep the mayberry aesthetic up you know. luckily our architect really pushed us into doing a model early on so when we plunked that down on the table during the design review meeting, the two bluehairs looked back and forth between their bi-focals and said "you know, this doesn't look anything like your drawings." they were wrong, though, it did. anyway, sorry for the rant. we interviewed 4 architects. three i found on the AIASF website and one was a friend of a friend who is a one woman operation in the city. we wound up going with her because we liked her vision and her personality. all four architects came to our house to scope things out and wound up staying between 1 to 2 hours. we did pay a retainer to get things going with the one we chose. she works on a percentage basis, 12% - 15% of the finished price tag. we never felt completely comfortable with that so we agreed to pass the baton after her initial drawings were complete. they were actually very detailed. my husband and i felt we didn't need so much hand holding through to the end and we have brought her in to tweak some things along the way. for that we pay her an hourly fee. we have had some stumbling points when things moved from her to the contractor's draftsman but our contractor is great at working these things out as we progress. it's been about 5 weeks since they kicked us out to start and the framers are really buzzing along. so far i'm quite happy. i'll happily pass on names and numbers if you'd like to contact me directly....See Morecalistoga_al ca 15 usda 9
