Well, you water your new plantings as they are vulnerable to drying out. Hanging pots and potted plants in general need to be watched. Any seeds sown or sprouting need to be kept wet. They can dry out in one day especially if they are in 6-packs. I use old window screens to shade them in extreme heat. And some mulching helps on your young veggie starts. Established plantings should be able to take a heat wave of short duration.

I don't know, 90 degrees isn't all that bad. 100 and above is bad. You reach 90 in SF? We hit 92 on the peninsula yesterday.

We're going to hit 100+ in the Valley today (and tomorrow and Saturday). I've already rigged up an awning over my fledgling vegetable garden but I worry a lot of my plants are going to keel over.

I have an idea. Buy big bags of ice, and put on the soil, or if you have one of those ice makers. I don't know if this will work.

I did all my watering yesterday and the day before. Deep soaked all my plants yesterday and then gave extra watering to the lawn for 2 days.

Supposed to be even hotter tomorrow. At 1pm so far its about 96-97, expecting about 99 or 100 by 2-3pm. Im in Southern California, about 50 miles inland.

I watered this morning, and then again at noon, but I am seeing some drooping even with full hydration.

It was up to 101 here in Orland. We are expected to hit record highs for the next few days. It never cooled off last night. The low was 70. I watered well this morning and I am watering again now. I have everything on drip and that helps with the electricity to run the pump.

Here on the southern Oregon Coast it's still 90F at 11:15 p.m. Many sensitive plants have been traumatized by hot Santa Ana-like winds. Daily highs were reported from 100 to 104 in town and this is just a few hundred yards from the ocean. I've never seen anything quite like this. This is absolutely unprecedented. Few people here have air conditioning, and the late-night duration of this heat is just beyond belief. Four days ago we had a fire burning in our wood stove to warm up the house from unseasonably chilly daytime weather in the 40's.

We're getting baked down here in Southern Cal. At least our inland areas will be in the 90s. Coastal areas (where I live aren't too bad in the 80s) Stll have the greenhoue fans blowing full blast and misting every morning and during the hea of the mid-day.

It was 101 yesterday and they are predicting 102, 103 today, tomorrow and Sunday. The twice daily drip watering has kept my flower beds happy. I have moved all my flats of seedlings into the shade and draped some soaker hose over them to keep them hydrated. So far, everything is ok. At least the Santa Anna type winds have calmed down. Those hot winds are tough on plants and people. We are having our Glenn County Fair now. I hope the heat does not keep people away. Tomorrow my 2 DGDs will be walking 2 miles in the fair parade in hot costumes between 10 and noon. We will be sending lots of drinking water to be given to them from their float. Poor girls! Please keep all the kids in the parade in your prayers.

It got to 97 here in San Francisco on Thursday, crazy. It's 90 today in the city. I'd say this is great weather for palms. Palms were made for this kind of weather. Just water them puppies up! They love it!

We hit 104 here in the East Bay. All my plants have Veggies have made it so far

I'm in Walnut Creek, 25 miles east of San Francisco, and we hit close to 100 the past couple of days. I think today is supposed to be "just" mid-to-upper 90s, with tomorrow to cool down a bit more to about 90. None of my container plants look happy, despite that I am watering them twice a day. My planted-in-ground Martha Washington Geraniums are loving this heat though, and blooming like crazy!

I will be so relieved when we get back into the 70s and 80s. I could hardly sleep on Thursday night (our A/C is not working, so it's only fans for us..... ugh).

I also had trouble sleeping on Thursday night. We made it, and I did not lose any plants. The endless summer hydragea, I thought was dead for sure, but it came back. It has completely wilted.

It was supposed to cool off today, but it sure hasn't here in Walnut Creek yet (I think it has at the coast though -- I hear that the Golden Gate Bridge was submerged in fog last evening, and it seemed a *little* cooler here last evening -- 25 miles inland). It's already mid-80s here in W.C. at 10:00 a.m. and I bet we're heading for the mid-90s by late afternoon. I've already *well* watered the garden and both lawns. Unfortunately, the garden needs to be hand-watered with a hose (no drip system), but the lawns have sprinkler systems. Usually I enjoy the hand-watering, but not when it's over 75 degrees out. Yeah, I get hot way too easily; just like my poor plants.

Still hot in the Santa Cruz area. We got up to 100 on Friday. We are hoping the fog comes in tonight. I just have been watering everything a lot.

Don't throw away your cardboard egg cartons tear them up for mulch to keep the soilc oool. It's so hot here and some of the sensitive plants in pots I had to move around out of the sun but it will only be a bit more but than the nasty very hot summer will be on us..

My garden made it. In fact, I repotted my banana plants and I have already noticed new growth on them.

We don't have air conditioning at all in our house. We haven't had it for three years. We're doing just fine.
