tomatoes at Long's in SF Bay Area?

The local Long's used to carry 4-inch tomato seedlings as well as flowers and other vegetables, but it no longer sells plants. I love one of the varieties I've found only from this source, and I was wondering if other Long's drugstores on the Peninsula carry these flats of 4-inch plants. They came from Fogline Nursery in Pescadero.

Which Longs do you mean?

The Longs Drugs at Rockridge Shopping Center in Oakland (51st and Broadway) has a huge garden center, and they have had tomato plants available since mid-February. I checked this Saturday and they have an even greater selection. The plants were from Sweetwater Organics. I didn't see any from Fogline Nursery.

GTG, I'm on the other side of the bay. I was looking for one between Redwood City and Sunnyvale.

I have seen Sweetwater plants at Whole Foods as well as the local nursery chain, Summerwinds. Another organic grower, Upstarts, is also at Summerwinds and other local nurseries, and sells plants on Sunday mornings at the Menlo Park farmers' market.

I am finding a better and better selection of tomato plants, but of course the more choices, the more selective I get. The one I like is Tommy Toe, a large red cherry tomato from the Ozarks that has done well in my garden for a couple years (and produces enough for me AND the squirrels). No one except Fogline seems to grow it, and I don't have a place to grow from seed.

For anyone on this side of the bay or a little south, the master gardeners are holding their sale this weekend, Saturday April 1 at the Mercury News west parking lot, 750 RIdder Park Dr., San Jose. They usually have a good selection of plants that are snapped up fast by the most competitive bunch of gardeners I've ever seen.

Vitex in SF Bay Area - East Bay

Vitex grows well enough here in the SF Bay Area, but has never been all that popular of a shrub on the bay side of the hills. It tends to be a lot more popular where one gets hot summers and cold winters. In fact, I would say it is probably more popularly seen in places like Palm Springs or Arizona than here. There are a few wholesale nurseries that do grow Vitex, but not the cultivars you mention. Mail order will probably be the best source. Just as an aside, not all natives are deer proof, and alot of the Ceanothus in particular are deer food. You might also consider some of the South African succulents; both drought tolerant and often deer proof. Cotyledon orbiculata in particular, and also many of the Aloes, although they will sometimes eat the flowers off Aloes. You might get good information on most deer resistant and drought tolerant natives to select from at the natives nursery at Tilden Park. This is close enough to you that the deer resistance of particular plants would be meaningful...

Ace Garden Center on Grand Avenue has a nice selection of tomatoes and heritage tomatoes in 4" pots. Check it out.

The Long's on Prospect Road (San Jose/Cupertino/Saratoga area) has got a great nursery. Many many tomato varieties, along with an outstanding selection of other veggies. Fantastic cactus selection, and your regular annuals & perennials too. Me, I picked up a "sungold", a "sunsugar", a watermelon start, several cacti and a couple of plants for hanging baskets.

I just made it out there on Saturday for the first time this year. You may want to put this one on your "to visit" list, if not this year, then early next Spring. It will be worth your while. Their veggie section would put some nurseries to shame...it is big.
