same here. work on irrigation system messed with water supply. man, those were the saddest looking watermelon and cantaloupe vines. a little loving and they cam right back and the following morning, they were good as new.

btw, that was 4 full days, no water at all, 110 in the day and 65/70 at night.

the tomatoes on the other hand didn't miss a beat. i can't bear to see how long they can go without water, but it's gotta be at least a week.

I can't seem to keep everything watered. If I miss one evening of moving hoses something suffers.

My flower garden is doing great. I am growing tomatoes in containers, poor things. I have to water at least once a day and feed about once a week. They're still producing but they look terrible.

Oh yeah....my million bells bit the dust a coupla days ago. Wanhhhhh!

Some tender young branches of my lovely pink cestrum (aka Hummer Magnet) fried to a crisp. A young shrub died, baked to a crispy-leafed branch.

Fortunately most of our beds are at least partial shade, and since I mulch very heavily, we can get by with once a week watering on all the beds even in the hottest weather.

I finally gave up on trying to grow container plants in just potting soil. Now I make sure I put mulch atop and underneath, that new 'moisture mat' stuff sold by Gardeners Supply. It makes a BIG difference. My pots that I could hardly keep up with daily watering, now need half that amount every 3-4 days.

You should set up a drip system if you don't have one already. It simplifies your life considerably.

It's not perfect but it's better than having to water by hand every day.

thanks for the understanding, everybody. i think a few shriveled things will survive but my potted fuschias and some other more thirsty pot plants are gone for good. a master gardener near me, who mulches heavily and has mostly drip lines, says she is still hand watering some things twice daily. -but- yay! it's cooler today; never thought i'd say "only" 94 degrees. min

With thousands of feet of drip lines I should have no problem watering. The fact is I must check the whole system every few days or a line may come apart and cut off the water to hundreds of plants. The last two weeks has been too hot to keep up the line check and last night I found one broken and hope some defoliated plants recover. Al

Only thing I can claim for certain is my new loquat. It was finally pushing new leaves and they wilted, sunburned, and stunted!

We didn't lose anything but some of the smaller new transplants wilted a little -- Pentas and Gerbera Daisy. We watered 1-2 X/week, but I water deeply. I can't imagine watering every day and then missing a couple of days and losing plants. Sounds like the water doesn't run long enough to soak down to all the roots? Am I missing something? We've had many days in the upper 90s/low 100s and last weekend was 109.

jenn- my definite losses were potted plants which were drip watered- maybe not long enough each time. if it is truly global warming i think will have to put all my plants in the ground tho some of my big old shrubs- abelia, arbutus, philadelphus, got fried all around the outsides. min
