I think I've got.....Toads?
Comments (13)Yes, toads are insect eaters. Around here, they especially like slugs and snails. If you have slugs, you'll have toads. But they like other insects too; I just happen to notice the toads around areas where slugs like to hang out. Toads are not a big problem. Your population explosion of toads is due to high levels of insects, which keeps the toads around and allows them the resources to reproduce successfully. Once the insects go away, so will the toads. Generally, though, toads are a good thing. it may be creepy to see so many, as usually you don't notice them, but it may be normal. Toads like to hide under rocks or leaf litter in shady areas during the day. In the winter they will burrow about 3 feet underground. Those holes you see are probably caused by voles or chipmunks, not toads....See MoreMy Western Red Ceder appear to be drying out, how can I give them
Comments (1)first.. inform your seller .... of how many seem to be browning.. perfect your guarantee ... they may reship in fall for replacement ... second.. stop watering unless your finger.. inserted to 3 inches.. indicated the soil is dry .... next.. what type of soil do you have .... did you plant them at the proper height .... at the point where they were planted prior ... finally .... i would not start shaping them for a year or two .. if you have good soil .. NEVER feed them .... unless a soil test indicates something is lacking from you soil ... finally .... they were kind of big for bare root .... but that said.. consider that you planted 40 trees ... if a few die.. thats what happens when you work in volume .... even the pro's would expect some problems ..... exactly how many of the 40 have significant problems .... any chance you can post some pix???? ken...See MoreA Toad! Comments (9)What a coincidence, I almost started a toad thread too.. :) Last week I walked out on my front sidewalk at night and what looked like a leaf suddenly hopped into the garden bed when I walked by! It was a big fat toad! I was so excited because he is the first toad I've seen in the yard after living here almost 5 years. I even put a large plant saucer down on the ground last year and fill it with water so the toads would access to water. (The birds drink from it sometimes too.) I think he might be living under the bulb and daylily foliage. Of course I had to run and grab the camera -...See MoreI need a toad expert
Comments (10)I ended up saving about 80 toads. As we were picking up to leave the job. I found about 8 medium sized toads. One was singing on the way home. That was a first for me. Sitting in the cab of my truck they would bury themselves in the sand in the bucket. I heard a chirping and one's head was poking from the sand with his throat puffed in a bubble going at it. I think he was thanking me. I will figure how to post pic and show some of my home toads. I have about four little ones, five medium males and at least one big female. Over the fourth of July. She was hanging out by my garbage cans and my guests and kids fed her a ton of Japanese beetles. They were blown away with feeding the toad. When it rains here I take a leisure walk through my yard and say hello when they come out....See Moredanbear
