OT: POTD: Sometimes you got to start out small

It is time to say good morning for me to all of you.

GOOD MORNING

The rainy days have past and the hot ones are coming back.

So you all know what I will be doing pretty soon. Yupp...WATERING. But even though the heat that comes way before I am done watering, exhausts me...I MISSED being able to look closely at each plant...see not only if they need my help...but also if they are showing new growth.. watching the Butterflies and Hummers have breakfast and lunch.

Eagerly looking for the Brugs to Y. Discovering yet another new plant had started to bloom and show me WHAT it looks like.

You guys mostly give me the names then lol

So I had started a lot of Carnation seeds and lots of them grew. I faintly remembered my mom when she grew hers. She used to bury it a little deeper then the seedling had grown out.

I was tickled when this little one bloomed. When I bought the seeds...I did not look and they are NOT the BIG Carnations...but at least I had THIS ONE :-)

Can it be that Carnations do not like heat?

Most of my carnations bloomed early in the season. I have a couple stray ones here and there so I think they might like cooler temps. That's a pretty little one. I like the spicy scent. It's funny but I can't stand carnations in a flower arrangement but like them in the garden.

Beautiful Amaryllis, mine got too tall this year also. Brrrrrrrrrr is right! Here in San Antonio we are expecting the coldest weather in 40 years. We might not get above freezing on Friday! Many of the plants I brought in a few weeks ago are sprouting new leaves. The first hard freeze snuck up on us and I accidentally left the Duranta out and thought it was dead, but now it's sprouting new leaves. Even one small Brug cutting that got left out is now sprouting from the bottom even though the top is shriveled. We'll be moving the Christmas lights over to the plants that are too big to bring in.

Chocolate Brug it all sounds like your named Plumeria fits this one to a T. But I am sure with Plumerias you can not exactly say WHAT the name is either and thus, I should call it my NOID peachy Beauty :-) Theresa the cutting itself is unfortunately real crooked...no way you can ship it. But I took 2 extra...one for Kristy if she wants one and who knows, maybe Kylie wants the other one? My luck ran out this morning thou. I went and said hi and checked if the Bambi is really the one in my next door neighbors yard...and I volunteered to water their yard for a week after I get back from Vacation rofl. But I don't mind. I am so glad I can repay them somehow for their generosity. Lucy

Frances what a *gift* that you actually got to see this little one and he even waited for you to return with the camera :-) Eloise I always believe that whatever we are suppose to have in life...we WILL :-) good luck in replacing or finding what you are looking for. Dee thank you for sharing the little grandma story lol. I know exactly what you mean. The things we do, that we would not dream of doing if it was not for or with our grandkids! Shirley sorry about the reminder. How is the walking going? Dianne how is Tommy handling his insulin treatment? Can you keep your brugs going inside until they bloomed? YES I asume for you the *winter* has arrived. :-( Marquest still do not remember your name and if you have given it away before and I am just forgetful...I am sorry. If you rather stay marquest..that is fine too. Sooner or later I have your address in my little pink sharing book also lol I LOVE your picture! Kristy don't you just hate it when you walk straight into a spiderweb with your face? That is when my patience for spiders stops lol. I keep taking down their web so long until they move someplace else. Guess you are ready for Halloween lol. A few days ago when we had the morning fog...EVERYTHING showed up so nicely. Got some really great pictures that day. Karyn there is NO WAY that sweet Kyle would do that to you ;-) I am more worried about the birthday bashes you throw rofl. I saw that too that he did not have as long as a tail as his brother or sister, right next to him. I am with you. I would not mind for the Turkey's to stroll by the house. OT: POTD: what do you see when you look into the sky?

What variety is that datura? It's so pretty. The milk jugs are used for winter sowing. You cut the top half almost completely off. Poke some drainage holes in the bottom, fill with soil, plant your seeds then put the top back on. After that you ignore it until it begins to warm up. Some seeds will have already sprouted and be a fairly good size while others will just be coming up. The first year I tried winter sowing I had a couple hundred containers on the deck and I had put too many seeds in each container not realizing how high the germination and survival rate is. I had thousands of seedlings and couldn't bring myself to compost the extras. I ended up potting them up and put an add on Freecycle. I got rid of everything. Freecycle is a great way to get rid of extra plants. I even had people come over and dig up an old lily bed that I wanted to get rid of but didn't want to dig myself. I put an add that said "free daylilies, you dig" and got loads of replies.

They don't seem to last that long in a flower arrangement, or?

So actually I am lucky that I got to see them bloom, period. Right?

Hi Lucy-
you and I are so much alike! I feel the same way when I go out to my garden to visit my babies! Isn't it glorious to be able to be outside? When I was a kid, (one of 6) my mom would yell- "GET OUTSIDE!" & we'd stay out there, til it was time to eat or go to bed.... She had no clue where we were, but we stayed out of trouble, & no one bothered us! Well, that started a good thing with me- I have to be outside!

I don't know what they do in the USA, but in Germany carnations are a big thing from the florists. They sell them as a bouquet, like long stem roses, They put a metal banding around the flower, just below where the flower petals of each flower would come out, and that keeps them like that for a very long time, couple of weeks or longer.
I love carnations. At one time when I was a kid and my Mom threw out an old bouquet of carnations, I got together with some friends and we plucked the Petals off of each flower and spread them out to dry. And then we stuffed them into a cornpipe and tried to smoke this stuff. Ahhh, let me tell you. I've done some stupid things in my life!!!

Lol, haven't we all haase. Lucy its really pretty. I have some small pink ones. I don't think mine are true carnations but they bloom in the spring as well. I think my next door neighbor grows some as well. I'll ask him if his are real or not, lol. I love carnations. I used to have one pressed in a book that I took from my fathers funeral when I was little.

We used to press a lot of flowers when we were young. then when I grew the Edelweiss last year, I pressed one for my mother and send it to her.

Oh my gosh we used to sit in the grass for hours looking for 4 leaved glovers and then pressed those as kids.

I believe it is time to start shopping for winter sowing and some unusual seeds.
