New Dawn Climber Not Blooming.

HI Everyone,

I put a new dawn climber (bare root) in the ground at the end of April. To my delight, she took off and now has canes up to 5 feet tall! However, I see no signs of buds and I was wondering how long does it usually take? It had a lot of aphids, which I have finally managed to get under control. The plant gets full sun from dawn (ha ha) to about 2pm. There is no sign of burning from the heat, like so many of my other plants this time of year. It looks like a healthy thriving plant. I live in south orange county, it's hot, but we get an ocean breeze most days. Any ideas when she might bloom?

Jennifer, you might try posting this question over on the Rose forum. I'm no expert and I don't have New Dawn, but sometimes it just takes a while with new roses. It's probably developing it's root system and that's more important at this stage anyway. Good luck...

With climbers more than 4 years old, it is good practice to take out some entire canes each year. Take out the oldest 1/3 of the canes at the base. This helps to control size; also, with most varieties, canes are most productive when they are two and three years old. This kind of pruning is traditionally done right after the spring flush of bloom is finished. If your arbor is only, say, 4' wide and 2' deep or long, it is way too small for New Dawn; the best thing would be to remove it now and plant a smaller climber such as Renae, also light pink, but much less vigorous and thorny. As long as stems are nearly vertical, roses will bloom only at the top of the plant. To get bloom further down, you have to train canes semi-horizontally (45 degrees or flatter). If your arbor is deep (long), you can do that on the sides; if not, use the upper faces of the arch as much as possible. Just cutting the canes back as you have done can produce some lower bloom only provided it is done about six weeks before the spring flush of bloom normally occurs. At other times it will result in lots of long canes developing.

thanks. i moved them to the north side of the house. they seem to get sunshine there early enough, around noon to when the sun goes down. what a job. they had very little growth since they were cut in march and transplanted then. but they do have roses, and i will just keep giving them water so they don't wilt. i wish i could give them 20 foot on each side, but can't. they can grow over the fence and into the land next door. i only gave them 10 foot between each other. wish we had bought a better piece of property instead of 55 foot wide with trees on the north side shading most of the yard. speaking of your 40 footer. i almost got a cecile brunner instead of new dawn. never heard of that type of infestation. i know of aphids and black spot. mold too.

Hi Everybody! So sorry I haven't been back for so long - I really don't know where the times goes. Thank you all for your input. Since I last posted, I have noticed a few buds, maybe 8 (!) on the whole plant. One has opened the proper light pink. Last year I had dieback down to about 3 feet, but it grew back like gangbusters, just as yours did, Mary, but no blooms at all. This spring, there was just a little tip damage, so I assumed I would get a wonderful show, it being the fourth year since planting. Even the second year, when it actually bloomed well, it never repeated, and so I thought then that perhaps I had Dr. Van Fleet. Does DVF form buds and bloom much later than New Dawn? Would it possibly form buds gradually, or only all at once? Thanks so much for your help, Judith

Jennifer, it's not just coastal. This is a poor rose for Southern California. I have a friend whose garden fries in Thousand Oaks, and he will agree. In fact, we just published an article, in which he said just that. There are many wonderful Southern California roses. This is not one of them. If you want a climber, grow Fourth of July, or Berries and Cream, or Reve d'Or, or Sombreuil, or Crepuscule, or Cl. Iceberg, or Secret Garden Musk Climber, or Cornelia, or Excellenz von Schubert, or or or . . . There are so many roses that are well-suited to this climate, it is pointless to grow one that is ill-suited to it. Jeri

It is normal for a climber to grow straight up when first planted. When it reaches the desired height bend the canes to the horizontal and the rose will begin a bloom cycle from those canes. Al

Well, I wish I could tell you why your ND isn't blooming with that size of canes but hang in there, I'm sure it will soon. I had two of these and they were blooming from about 2 feet up. I removed them about 3 years ago (they just got too big for the area) and I'm still digging out the roots.

You can try tying the canes horizontally to a support as Al suggests but I never found that necessary for this rose to bloom. Once it gets going, watch out - it's a monster in So.Ca. : ) Give it LOTS of room!

I grew it for about 3 years. It doesn't like Southern California much. You will get a few flowers next spring. It's a good rose for zone 5 or 6. There are much better selections for this climate.

It was a slow bloomer for me. Had the growth but it took me about 3 years to get any blooms worth mentioning.

I had a couple New Dawn roses and they were beautiful flowers. I agree with Maryc that it did take a couple of years to get going. Maybe a similar climbing rose would be Cecile Bruner, or my favorite, which is larger "Eden". Eden does get some black spot and mildew, but what a gorgeous rose... It's quite a bit bigger than ND or Cecile and has many more petals. None of my roses look great this year..
