Another emergency (wet Brug)

We inherited a yellow Brug from my mother in a very large pot and we have had it for years. This year's winter it could stay outside since there was no frost and it from March on it grew and bloomed beautifully but suddenly (after heavy rains) the soil is mossy and although the pot has a big hole he could not get rid of the water, it stays drenched and the water forms pools on top of the saturated soil. We came back after a week's holiday (lots or rain) it looked awful, all leaves limp and yellow. This morning we cut it carefully with thin wood out of the pot and lifted it and after black water streaming out we put in drainage pebbles and put it back. Soil still black so not completely rooted, but we are unsure why this occurred. How come an old pot suddenly stops drainage with an open hole? Anyone any idea what we should do?
