OT: Water Emergency

If it's not one thing it's another. There was a severe water main break last night and the whole county has been affected. All club and community pools are closed. Most homes don't have any water pressure and those that do are on a boiled water alert. Of course I found this out as I was drinking my morning coffee and after I brushed my teeth. lol I just went out and bought a few more cases of water but didn't think to buy any ice. I can't use the ice from the ice maker. I doubt that I'll be able to find any ice or even anymore water. This is affecting just about 1 million people! Very few people in the county are on well water but I bet those that are are happy. This makes up for their not having water due to all the power outages that we've had. Thankfully my water pressure is fine but a neighbor a block away can't even flush their toilet. Yuck!

before I OT: go to the reading program with my granddaughter I want to wish you good luck and hope that they fix it very very soon. Who says it's good to brush your teeth? hahahahaha

Oh, no thats terrible. Run out and buy some ice trays and use bottled water if you can't find any ice. Hope they get it fixed soon.

Thanks for all the input folks, it's nice to know that other people have had to deal with the same issues as me. I excised all the brown/black mushy areas and dusted the wounds with cinnamon powder. The plants have been sitting indoors in the sunroom with a fan on them for a couple days now, and seem to be holding steady. No imminent deaths yet, so that's good. I'll give them another day or two and then water them a little with peroxide solution, and then put them back outside so they can start their recovery. Howard_a, I appreciate your perspective about the direct sun and sudden change in environment. I did wonder about that myself, although I've seen sunburn before and the leaf damage on my plants looked different than that. I've left plants on the porch or even the bare sidewalk and they've still been slow to sunburn, so I don't think two days of morning sun in and of itself was enough to cause this problem. The combination of high heat and light might have stressed the plants' tissues and made the existing water problem worse...but based upon the anectdotes of other commenters here, I'm betting the main problem was the still the excess water. Orchidflowerchild, I'm glad you've got a setup that works well for you. This is only my second season of growing orchids outdoors so I'm still trying things out. I've had problems in the past getting mounted or bare root plants enough water during the non-rainy season...even when I try to remember to water them daily, they end up shriveled. I am a pretty lazy gardener;) I guess the issue with outdoor plants in Florida is that due to the vastly shifting seasonal climate, you're going to have to make some sort of compromise w.r.t. potting medium/setup. It'll end up either too dry or too wet! I think now that I learned this hard lesson, I'll know well enough to bring my plants in during super wet periods. Tuezday1, I haven't been growing Catts for very long so I'll keep your advice in mind. Thus far they haven't been very fussy, and seem to like it well enough under the grapefruit tree. They've got a lot of open space around them so they get quite a lot of bright morning and late afternoon/evening sun, in addition to the dappled midday shade provided by the tree.

I wish this website offered a way to go into a post I'd made (after I've submitted it) to correct some of my usual stupid errors!!! In my last post I said "...significant nitrate.." and it should have been "...significant nitrite...". Oh well. Amazing how you can overlook something even after you've proof read it a few times!! Mazela, first let's clarify some of the definitions you've got. Total hardness is the measure of all divalent and trivalent cations. In most waters - both surface & groundwater - calcium and magnesium account for 95-98% of all the divalent and trivalent cations so many folks assume that's all there is. But things such as lead, strontium, aluminum, etc. will also contribute to total hardness - we just hope to not have much of those things in our water! Carbonate hardness - this is not hardness; it is a measure of the alkalinity. Many, many decades ago when they developed the lime-soda ash method for treating hard waters (total hardness>>60-80 mg/L) this terminology - carbonate hardness - was developed (as was expressing thing in mg/L as CaCO3 - which REALLY messed things up!). It was meant to simplify calculations but unfortunately it also confused the underlying concepts. So here's an easy test: take some of your water - measure the "carbonate hardness". Then add a bit of gypsum (calcium sulfate) to it or add calcium chloride - since these compounds will release calcium you would increase the hardness. You will see that the "carbonate hardness" doesn't change. Take a new sample of water; add some sodium bicarbonate - your "carbonate hardness" will increase and yet you added no divalent or trivalent cation in this latter case. I desperately try to make sure I never use that term because of the subsequent confusion it creates. Increasing your total hardness, i.e., calcium & magnesium - I agree. But I tend not to worry about it too much since you'll probably find that in addition to the Ca & Mg in your water supply there should be an adequate amount in the food you feed them. If you search on this site you'll find a recipe for making your own fish food - it includes the shells from the shrimp. Excellent source of calcium for the fish. So using your limestone rocks...it doesn't hurt. Which water quality parameters to measure? Everyone has their favorites. I only bother with alkalinity and then only about once a month or so but especially right before the cold weather sets in and we "go under ice" - the pond freezes over. I'll probably measure pH about 1-2 times per year. Why so little? Because I know if I've got the alkalinity where it needs to be then pH is going to be fine. I used to measure ammonia/nitrite/nitrate but the only time I now do it is to take a sample in February or March to make sure my aerator is stripping the ammonia out sufficiently. I feel I can get away with this rather lazy approach to an important facet of "tending the garden" because I have rather large biofilters relative to the size of the pond/fish load/feeding amounts. If I thought my biofilters were more marginal I would then be forced to monitor the ammonia and certainly nitrate more often. So if you are measuring your alkalinity (aka, carbonate hardness, KH) at 30 mg/L that is indeed quite low. I would start adding sodium bicarbonate (good old Arm & Hammer!!) until you got it in that 80-120 mg/L range. The limestone rock won't hurt but it is a relatively slow response to an important water quality parameter. Hope all this helps. ---David

Joyce, so glad that you dropped in and said hello. We've missed ya. I hope you find a way to get your knee surgery done. Keeping you in my prayers. Hoping that the plants coming out of their winter sleep and starting to bloom will at least cheer you up a bit. Don't feel bad about losing a few brug cuttings, this was my first year to start brug cuttings over the winter and I'm embarrassed to say how many I've lost. :o( But on the bright side, I do have some that will find a home outside when I get time to plant them. :o) It will be nice to actually have a dinning room again. lol Bri, hope you get over the sinus infection, those are no fun at all. Thanks weedmeister and asolo - I did a google search and found the Watts Intelliflow device which uses a detector on the floor and I like the idea of a single handle to turn off both the hot and cold water. Like most folks, I never turn the water off to the washer when I'm not using it, but given I now have a wood floor in that area, I wiill start doing this. Right under the washer and dryer, my GC used a rubber product used in shower pans that he painted on and then we tiled over that with a 2 inch lip all the way around to create actual pans that the machines will sit in. After all these precautions, hopefully there will be no floods. Thanks again.

If there's any water to spare (even from a ditch), the neighbors can always "bucket flush". They've been replacing waterlines on the street where I live. All the trucks & dirt piles are stored on the empty lot across the street. One guy was over there banging the heavy equipment around at 6:04 am. I complained to the boss & after describing the truck, they said they didn't know which one it was. I told them they would know for sure next time it happened because I was going to get my gun out & shoot his tires. He hasn't been back. (grin) Water is very dear to my heart after living for a year with a well that went dry.

We were talking at work about what is worse -- no water or no power -- LOL! We're soooo thankful we still have power after the storm last night. Lots of trees down, not in our yard fortunately.

We didn't get any bad storms last night just rain. I'm not sure which would be worse, power vs water? I'd go to a hotel for either if it was going to last too long. If you are on well water and lose power you are SOL with both unless you have a back-up pump. That would really suck!

I'm starting to think about portable generators. Seriously, I'd only need one running 3000 to 3500 watts to keep the fridge going as well as the sump pump, and maybe a small fan, and one light bulb!

That last storm when we lost power -- the neighbors behind us had theirs. I swear they turned every light on in the house to make us feel bad! LOL!

ugh, that's horrid, karyn! I've only had to go without water for a couple hours, maybe a day at most, when someone was doing some work on the pipes. I can't even imagine, heh.

When I lived out in the country my ex husband used to have a big welding truck with a generator. It really came in handy when every time the wind blew the power went out, lol. I would like to have one for emergencies too.

My brugs look like they are folding up their leaves. I think they are praying so the 40 % Chance of rain we have for today will come our way and give them SOME RAIN.
Just kidding about the leaves folding up hahahaha But they are drooping way to much and you can tell by the way the leaves grow out. Even though they are being watered sometimes 3 times throughout the day. Got them in pots. Next year they are going in the ground!

Luzia, you can buy the pots in the ground and it will help conserve moisture. Just plug the bottom hole and cut holes in the sides and use mulch if you have it on top. If you have other plants in the pot with them they will all compete for water as well. Some brugs do fold up and pray its called photonasty. Hahaha I got to say it. I love that word.

You are right about the well and power. We have a deep well, actually they hit a spring when they put the well in, lucky us, but when you loose power, doesn't matter how deep your well is you just ain't gettin' any water, that also means you can't flush the toilet. DH and GS have to pee off the back porch when that happens.

As for what might happen next, shhhh, don't say that to loud hurricane season started 1 Jun.

Kristy you GOT to come and see it for yourself! The moment I start digging, all I hit is ROCKS!!!! To dig ONE whole is a so much effort that I can only do ONE a day......IF it is not hot. The most I can dig is maybe 2 inches.......the MOST before I hit rocks. But in colder weather I will DIG. Now I am going to edge the beds and cut grass as long as it is overcast. Thank you so. I will remember the photonasty part and not thing it is a miracle lol.

Still on a boil water alert. Now they are saying that you shouldn't wash your hands in the tap water. GMAFB what am I supposed to do? Shower with bottled water???? I have a hard time believing that washing with it will cause a problem. It can't be dirtier then the Atlantic Ocean off the coasts of MD or DE and all the lakes and ponds that I swim in. I'll be complaining about a case of disentary next week. lol

Geez I wonder what the heck they let loose in it that you can't wash your hands? The sewer line maybe, lol. I hope its over soon. I feel so bad for all those people with whole towns flooding too. When all that makes it way to New Orleans its gonna be bad there too. It basically a bowl right on the edge of the river. Where my kids live is right on the Mississippi River as well and I have seen the river come all the way to the edge of town. If it keeps up it will flood the entire historic disrict there as well. Too bad we can't divert all that water to where its needed. Its either flood or drought unfortunately. I only caught the end of the news showing the video. There were a bunch of pink pigs on a flat roof with water all around them stranded and hungry. Poor little piggies.

Oh Karyn! I am so sorry you are having the water problems. I hope they can correct it soon. Here I have city water in the front yard and well water in the back yard (City water to the house) so I have a backup unless we lose water and power (then I am outta here!!) We had alot of rain while I was gone and my plants has grown alot!!! Gotta do some yard work today before rains set in again.

The WSSC is so wishy washy. They sent an email last night saying that they thought the boil water alert would be lifted today. They said to run all faucets for at least 5 minutes and maybe the drinking water should still be boiled. Well what is it? Boil or not. Their answer is like someone saying they are a little pregnant! lol

Karen, I am sorry to hear you are without water ! I had a simiiar situation a few years ago..have they offered you bottled water ? they were trucking it in and we could go get so many bottles per household.

I hope it is fixed soon, but I would boil the water longer then they say to...they have their safe levels, that arent always soo safe..

This year has been terrible weather wise..we are talking about getting a generator also..we have had more lightning storms in a week, then we have had in a few years here..I was use to them in Fla, but here it is rare.

I hope everyone stays safe !

Geez Karyn, sorry about your H2O probs. That sux. I agree with F4F, they should be bringing you guys truckloads of water. We had to go through that with Hurricane Floyd, and a few other times as well. That really sucked. And then having to stand in line for it too! UGH!
Hope it's better now! Def boil, don't take any chances!

I do believe that our water crisis has been resolved. I must say the grocery stores made a killing on bottled water this past week.

I'm glad Karyn. We finally got some rain last night. You can almost see the trees sighing with relief, lol. I had to buy $60 worth of rice today so I know what you mean about price the stores making plenty. There is a shortage of the kind John eats and I got enough to last the summer if he rations it, lol. They said they have been out for 2 months and don't know if they will be able to get anymore. It has doubled in price already so I had to stock up.

I was reading an article specifically about the increase in the price of rice. I only buy it every few months because I buy a 20 lb sack at a time. I buy it at the Korean market. It used to be about $20 but I bet it's double that now. Glad to hear that you got some rain. We are finally drying out a little bit but there's a chance of storms tonight and tomorrow.

Glad to hear the water problems have been fixed. Going without water is the worst! After H. Rita flooding we had no potable water or electricity for weeks! It was the worst nightmare ever!
I recently been reading up on solar and found that there are some solar pumps that you can hook up to your well so you can still have water even without electricity. I am sure they are pricey though.

Glad to hear they got your water fixed. Thursday night I got up in the middle of the night and got a big glass of water. Drank most of it then started getting sick as a dog about 30 minutes later. Was sick all night. Then noticied the water coming out of the faucets was brown, then we had no water at all. There was a water main break but no one ever told us anything. Sure wish I'd grabbed a bottled water out of the fridge instead of filling up my glass!

Oh, Michelle thats gross, lol. Happened to me once but I didn't get sick. I hope you feel better. They sent us a letter about a month later. A lot of good that did, lol. I have a bud on one of my day lillies! Yippee!
