Howdy Doody, Cyphostemma juttae flowering for the first time

And it's so early, too, but it's the first time flowering for my largest plant ever. I wonder if I can self-pollinate them?

The various C. 'Fat Bas#$%^; plants are always first to leaf and flower out (beginning in February) but this it the first time the Jutt Grape is doing its thing. Small Monday Happy Dance.

In other news, I've put three plants outside (the large Aloe vera and the equally large but much more dangerous A. marlothii). So the outside season starts again - I hope I don't have to bring them inside until September.

Yeah, where's the pic? Is it flowering now or just budding up? Are you gonna kill us with the suspense?

Jonas, So you're getting our snow, eh? Well, that's OK. Josh, I don't need any more, thank you. Yo Denise, That's also where our winter went - Omahaward. I'm not missing it much but I have this sense of doom about a false spring. We've had lots of sun, comparatively speaking, during the last month - usually it's not in much abundance. And you're right about the interior temps - they haven't varied much. Additionally, since we're in the lee of a hill, and the neighbors across the street cut some trees down last year, we're getting more sun earlier than we had before. Yes...it's all starting to make sense. And that's great new about your A. plic - you'll enjoy the big flowers and, as X says, you'll get a new branch, too. Tom, Thanks, I might do it, but Tequila might need to make an appearance first - it seems antithetical to cut the little nubbins off of the branch, as well as a little cruel.

Did not make the container the holubii is in. The pots are made using earthenware clay, and tend to use the darker colors more often. Have tried some glazing but haven't been happy with them. I like the course texture as most of my pots are made that way. Usually I make the pot with the plant intended to go in it. The container I just finished was made with my large Cyphostemma juttae in mind. The pot measures 19in wide x 14in deep x 9in tall and the juttae is 21in tall x 25in spread x 14in diameter at soil level. I've made a couple of small hypertufa years ago but nothing lately. Frank, I know Carl and have got plants from him before when I lived in San Diego. I shall have to give him a call. And I lived in the neighborhood near his shop - don't I wish I could stroll over now for some 400 lb. Neobuxbaumia for the salon! Folks, Carl's a good guy - give him your business. He also has Sedum multiceps (which he waters in the summer, I'll have you know - I always killed mine when I did that!). This is one of the easiest pachycaul plants to grow - it tells you when it wants to grow and when it doesn't. Give it lots of warmth and it will have growth each year. What causes it to break dormancy - probably the same thing that causes my Hawthorns to break into bud and your redbud trees to do the same - spring, with all of its attendant joys. Yes, it will heal over, but if it's a severe cut / prune, you'll want to daub it with cinnamon. I know the intensity that you have for your first plants, but don't overthink it. Although I would say it's an easy plant to grow (and therefore good on you for getting it as your first large specimen ), it's still incredibly rewarding. Give it as much sun and warmth as you can, the summer rains of New York should do it right (it is a grape, after all) - you'll just want to make sure you don't overwater it, but that's dependent on the soil you have it in. An old post was resurrected! I have been swamped with life (work, kids, etc.) this year, that's why I haven't been contributing much of late. My apologies. I have also been involved with another somewhat related hobby: developing a reef aquarium. Let me tell you, many coral and other reef animals absolutely rival succulents for color and form. Yes, I do have a greenhouse, which serves 2 purposes: it protects plants from too much rain - especially my Mesembs during the summer and cactus during the cool time. I keep as many plants as I can outdoors unprotected during the spring-summer-fall. I overwinter pretty everything except the true tropical plants (Adenium, some Pachy) in my unheated garage. Soil mix of choice for mesembs and other smaller & slower species is a formula with various proportions of turface, garden coil, fine gravel and pumice. Everything else is in a mix basically of 50-50 turface to perlite. Fertilizer is diluted liquid algoflash for most plants. Bigger things just get a healthy dose of Osmocote slow release + micros in the spring plus added Mag + gypsum. x

i'd love to have myself a large cyphostema. iI have been trying to get my hands on a cyphostema for quite a while now, but it seems to be harder to get than i originally anticipated. IdI'd love to see some flowers.
talking about weather, idI'd rather have a frost forecast in the future rather than what we are having here. Today was 107 degrees! Everything is burning to a crisp. Not cute.

Mine hasn't even broke into leaf. And we have had a very warm spring,78f average this month. I do see buds.
As formerly a greenhouse manager..I would guess BC has had a very sunny spring?..that caused the spurt.

This unworthy subject begs your forgiveness (rubs hands because ploy is working - this will be another jade thread!).

Folks, it's been a strange last four months - went from winter to pretty much early summer in two days.

Zech, that's the thing - it's not large at all, certainly perhaps approaching a 100th the size Caudex Keith's is

Sunny, yes, but I've kept this plant potted in the same pot, with soil refreshed each year, for three years - buried in that pot are rocks of mighty density and yammish size. I'll have to get a...what's that you're asking for, a picture? OK, will do.

C. juttae have some ugly leaves, I must say. I used to like mine but I grew tired of it and gave it away last fall. I don't have unlimited space unfortunately :-)

Water yours well and you will get blooms again later in the summer.

Agreed, but they're actually charming on a 6' plant - they look dorky on potted stuff that's no larger than a rat dog.

I've done that with other plants, too.

Do you think repotting it would cause the flowers to abort and do you know if they would self?
