Philodendron (giant split-leaved type), ficus trees. Hibiscus come in for the winter, go out for the summer. Giant (large leaved) schefflera simply must go out this year, the scale is sooooo bad. (I know--there are good systemics for this, but too many of my cats are plant eaters...) I have a west facing deck: bright enough first half of the day, some full sun late afternoon. I also usually keep an umbrella open that shades some of the deck. My south/sw facing deck gets some sun and then nice shade from a few large trees in the yard.

Hi I'm in Palm Beach county the northern limit of 10. greenhouser Afaid so lol. The only frost proof place is Key West. Doesn't do it every year and have only experienced one hard freeze .27 for four hours though it got to 22 by the lake. We once had a snow, 77/78 as I recall. What a sight that was lol. Has never done it again . Since I'm so close to the gulf stream I'm usually about 5/ 8 degrees above the inland parts of the county Last year the low was 37 while 42 the year before. Cold fronts usually last 3 days with each night progessively warmer. The coldest daytime I remember was 53. It's kind of interesting as in order to frost the cold air must come straight down the peninsula and it must be dead calm. and perfectly clear. Other wise the warm ocean raises the temps.as well as cloud cover prevents radiation. So the next day is always brilliant sunshine with an incredible rise in ground temps while the air can stay cool. My first attempt at heating the GH was using sheet plastic. Worked beautifully during the night with a low of 30. I went to work before dawn and was so thrilled the GH was toasty 60 lol When I came home it was 140 degrees inside while outside was 62 lol. I lost everything lol. My new system will work !! gary

Hi Laura how did your tree make out last night? It sounds like you know what you are doing , that will probably make a nice mix with the 2 potting soils. Laura with pro mix you have to wait at least a week before fertilizing . Let's hope your tree catch's on . Laura do you leave your tree outside in the winter? If you leave it outside why not pot it up in a larger pot . Wow you had a thunderstorm last night good .Is that very common in the summer ? Do you have something that catch's the rain water . Because if you ever over fertilize you can flush your tree with that water . Have a beautiful day Laura Mike was it raining cats and dogs or was it raining more frogs ? Thanks Mike for all your help , without you I probably would have kept on fertilizing every time I watered . I was washing my trees all day , so relaxing i am in the sun and i am cooled by the spray from the water .I have a wicked tan to prove it . I have been cleaning my trees so much I don't think I have to worry about the fertilizing problem any more . There is so much water that goes into the pot . I am getting ahead with the scale problem I have been washing all week and I am off all next week so those suckers don't stand a chance . Where there are ants there are scales and I did not see one ant in any of my trees. Mike do they ever respond to a good cleaning just as much as I would think to a good rainstorm . My trees are so green and even my tango which is in the pro mix is going to have a major flush , I can see all the new growth coming and it has a lot of fruit on it . What a glorious , spectacular etc day we have going here , it is 80 degrees with a beautiful breeze . I know what your saying about the cold day your having , it was very cool here last night to . You will probably get the weather we are having right now tomorrow , something to look forward to . I saw that Boston let there fireworks go Thursday night that was a very smart decision . In a chest type freezer the evaporator coils (cooling coils) are right under the interior lining of the food cavity then there is a thick insulation layer and the condenser coils are wrapped around the outside of the insulation immediately under the exterior sheet metal skin of the freezer. The condenser coils are tight against the exterior skin and the skin acts as a heat sink to help dissipate the excess heat energy to the outside air surrounding the freezer. The heat your feeling is normal operation.
